87. The Enemy’s Astonishment at the Bravery of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.)
History records that the standard (flag) of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās (a.s.) was looted during the events of Karbalā.
When the caravan of grief was returning from Shām (Syria), the noble women and survivors requested Yazīd to return the looted belongings. He agreed and ordered that anyone who had plundered something on the day of ʿĀshūrā should return it and would receive a reward in return.
Among the items brought back, Yazīd noticed a flag that was completely riddled with holes, and only the part where four fingers would hold the pole remained intact.
He asked, "Whose flag is this?"
They replied, "This is the flag of the standard-bearer of Karbalā — Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās (a.s.)."
Even Yazīd, with his hardened heart, stood up and exclaimed, “Is this how a brother sacrifices for a brother?”
They asked, "Why are you so shocked?"
He responded, “Do you not see what incredible courage the bearer of this flag had? So many arrows struck him, yet he did not let the flag fall — it was pierced through and through while still in his hand!”
But Yazīd did not know the full story — that this hero of Karbalā was thirsty, having had no water for three days, and yet single-handedly fought through four thousand soldiers guarding the Euphrates, driving them away.
When he finally reached the water, out of respect for Imām Husain’s thirst, he did not drink — and returned with dry lips, just as his father Ḥaydar al-Karrār (Imām ʿAlī) would have done — charging into the enemy ranks, scattering them and advancing forward with such strength that no one dared to face him.
They had to hide behind palm trees and cut off his strong arms. Even then, with the remnants of his blessed hands, he held the flag high and did not let it fall.
A beautiful phrase appears in the Ziyārah of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.) which deserves deep reflection:
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ بَالَغْتَ فِي النَّصِيحَةِ وَأَعْطَيْتَ غَايَةَ الْمَجْهُودِ
“I bear witness that you fulfilled the utmost of counsel and exerted every last ounce of effort.”
(Ziyārah text)
That is, whatever could be done, he did it — and no one could have done more.
In return for this unparalleled sacrifice, Allah the Most Generous not only granted him exalted ranks in the Hereafter, but also showered him with worldly miracles (karāmāt) in a way that no one — after Imām Husain (a.s.) — has ever received.
