The Greatest Afflictions of that Noble One (a.s.)
The Greatest Afflictions of that Noble One (a.s.)
The author says:
If you reflect upon this situation, you will realize that it was among the greatest afflictions of that noble one (a.s.).
More severe than this was that travelers passing along the road would see him from a distance, then deliberately take another route so that he might not ask them for his support.
Even more painful than this was the statement made to him by ʿUbaydullah ibn al-Hurr al-Juʿfi.
When the Imam (a.s.) reached Qasr Bani Muqatil, he noticed a tent erected there and asked:
“Whose tent is this?”
They replied:
“It belongs to ʿUbaydullah.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“Call him.”
When the Imam’s messenger came to him and said:
“Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn Ali (a.s.) summons you,”
he replied:
“Surely we belong to Allah.”
(Qur'an 2:156)
Then he said:
“By Allah, I only left Kufah because I did not wish to remain there when Imam Husain (a.s.) entered it. By Allah, I did not wish to see him, nor did I wish him to see me.”
When this was conveyed to the Imam (a.s.), he arose and went to him personally. He greeted him with salām, sat down, and invited him to support him.
Again he repeated the same words and presented his excuse.
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“O man! You have committed many sins, and Allah will hold you accountable unless you repent
at this very moment.
Support me, so that my grandfather (s.a.w.a.) may intercede for you before Allah.”
He replied:
“O son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), by Allah, if I support you, I will be the first person to be killed before you.
However, spare me from this and take my horse, for there is no equal to it in swiftness.”
The Imam (a.s.) turned away from him and said:
“I have no need for it.
But since you will not help me, then go to a place where you cannot hear our cries, and do not be with our enemies.
For whoever hears our call of helplessness and does not answer us, Allah will cast him face-first into the Fire of Hell.”
Then the Imam (a.s.) rose and returned to his place.
After the martyrdom of the Imam (a.s.), ʿUbaydullah regretted his decision and composed verses expressing his remorse. [935]
The words of the Imam (a.s.) affected no one except Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn.
With him was a group from Fazarah and Bajilah. They were traveling alongside the Imam (a.s.), but they deliberately avoided staying in the same place as him. Rather, they camped on the opposite side.
Those people themselves narrated:
“One day we were sitting and eating our food when suddenly the messenger of Imam Husain (a.s.) entered and said:
‘O Zuhayr! Imam Husain (a.s.) is calling for you.’
At once every one of us dropped the morsel from his hand and sat in astonishment, as though birds were perched upon our heads.
Then Zuhayr’s wife, whose name was Daylam, said:
‘Subhan Allah! The son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) sends for you, and you do not go to him, at least to hear what he has to say and then return?’
So Zuhayr arose and went.
He remained only a short while.
Soon he returned joyful, with light shining from his face.
Then he ordered that his tent and belongings be moved to the side of the Imam (a.s.).
He then said to his wife:
‘I divorce you. Return to your family. I do not wish any harm to come to you because of me.
I have resolved to accompany Imam Husain (a.s.) and sacrifice my life for him.’
Then he handed over his property to her and entrusted her to some of his relatives so that they might return her safely to her family.
She stood before him weeping and bidding him farewell, saying:
‘May Allah grant you every good. I only ask that on the Day of Resurrection
you do not forget me before the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).’
Then Zuhayr said to those people:
‘Whoever among you does not wish to accompany me, then this is my final farewell to him.
However, I will narrate to you a tradition.
We once went on a military expedition by sea, and Allah granted us victory. We acquired abundant spoils.
Then Salman (a.s.) said to us:
“Were you pleased with this victory and these spoils?”
We replied:
“Yes.”
He said:
“When you meet the Master of the Youths of Paradise, then strive before him and fight in his cause, and be more delighted with that than you are with this victory and these spoils.”
Now I entrust you to Allah.’
Then he proceeded to the service of the Imam (a.s.) and remained with him until he attained the lofty rank of martyrdom.” [936]
“Would that I had been with him, so that I might have attained a tremendous success.”
(Qur'an 4:73)
