Hud Ayah 61

- And He made it to prevail against them for seven nights and eight days uninterruptedly. He said: The moon was under an inauspicious conjunction with Saturn for seven nights and eight days.

[Qur’an, al-Haqqah 69:6-7 — M. H. Shakir: And as to Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent wind, which He made to prevail against them for seven nights and eight days uninterruptedly, so that you could see people therein prostrate as if they were trunks of hollow palm-trees.]

- 99-/5127 Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The barren wind issues forth from beneath the seven earths, and nothing has ever come out from it except against the people of ‘Ad when Allah became angry with them. He commanded the keepers to let out from it the measure of a ring’s opening, but it defied the keepers, and there came out from it the measure of an ox’s nostril out of its rage against the people of ‘Ad. So the keepers cried to Allah about that and said, ‘Our Lord, it has defied us, and we fear that there will perish among Your creatures and the inhabitants of Your lands those who have not disobeyed You.’ Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent Jibril, and he pushed it back with his wing and said to it, ‘Come out according to what you have been commanded.’ So it turned back and came out as it had been commanded, and it destroyed the people of ‘Ad and whoever was in their vicinity.”

- 99-/5128 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him)—in a hadith—who said: “As for the barren wind, it is a wind of chastisement; it leaves nothing of wombs fertile, nor anything of vegetation. It is a wind that issues forth from beneath the seven earths, and no wind has ever issued from it except against the people of ‘Ad when Allah, Exalted is He, became angry with them.” And he mentioned the hadith as previously, with slight variation in some wording.

- Surely my Lord is on the straight path. [Qur’an, Hud 11:56 — M. H. Shakir: Surely I rely on Allah, my Lord and your Lord; there is no living creature but He holds it by its forelock; surely my Lord is on the right path.]

- 99-/5129 Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Ma‘mar al-Sa‘di, who said: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), regarding His saying “Surely my Lord is on the straight path,” said: “It means that He is upon the truth; He recompenses good with good and evil with evil, and He pardons whom He wills and forgives—glory be to Him, the Most High.”

- And to Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; He brought you into being from the earth, and made you dwell in it, therefore ask forgiveness of Him, then turn to Him; surely my Lord is nigh, answering. - 99-/5130 Al-‘Ayyashi: from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting in the Sacred Mosque when a man from Kufa said to him—‘Ali (peace be upon him) said: “Our brothers have transgressed against us?” So ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (blessings be upon him) said to him: O servant of Allah, do you not read the Book of Allah: ‘And to ‘Ad (We sent) their brother Hud’? So Allah destroyed ‘Ad and saved Hud. And: ‘And to Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih’—so Allah destroyed Thamud and saved Salih.”

- 99-/5131 From Yahya ibn al-Musawir al-Hamdani, from his father, who said: A man from the people of al-Sham came to ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) and said: “Are you ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn?” He said, “Yes.” He said: “Your father is the one who killed the believers.” So ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn wept, then wiped his eyes, and said: “Woe to you! How did you judge decisively that my father killed the believers?” He said: “By his statement: ‘Our brothers have transgressed against us, so we fought them on account of their aggression.’” He said: “Woe to you! Do you not read the Qur’an?” He said: “Indeed.” He said: “Allah has said: ‘And to Midian (We sent) their brother Shu‘ayb,’ and ‘And to Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih.’ Were they their brothers in religion or in their tribe?” The man said to him: “No, rather in their tribe.” He said: “These were their brothers in their tribe, but they were not their brothers in their religion.” He said: “You have relieved me; may Allah relieve you.”

- 99-/5132 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Abu Hamzah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) asked Jibril (peace be upon him): “How was the destruction of the people of Salih (peace be upon him)?” He said: “O Muhammad, Salih was sent to his people when he was sixteen years old, and he remained among them until he reached one hundred and twenty years; they did not respond to him with any good. They had seventy idols which they worshiped besides Allah, Mighty is His remembrance. When he saw that from them, he said: ‘O my people, I was sent to you when I was sixteen, and I have now reached one hundred and twenty. I present to you two matters: if you wish, question me so that I may ask my God, and He will answer you immediately regarding what you have asked me; and if you wish, I will ask your gods—if they answer me regarding what I ask, I will depart from you, for I am weary of you and you are weary of me.’ They said: ‘You have been fair, O Salih.’ So they appointed a day on which they would go out. They went out with their idols to the open, brought near their food and drink and ate and drank. When they finished, they called him and said: ‘O Salih, ask.’ He said to their greatest idol: ‘What is this one’s name?’ They said: ‘So-and-so.’ Salih said to it: ‘O so-and-so, answer!’ But it did not answer him. Salih said: ‘What is the matter with it, that it does not answer?’ They said: ‘Call another.’ So he called them all by their names, but none of them answered him. Then they turned to their idols and said to them: ‘Why do you not answer Salih?’ But they did not answer.”

- They said: “Withdraw from us and leave us with our gods for a while.” Then they removed their carpets and bedding, took off their clothes, rolled on the dust, and cast dust upon their heads, saying to their idols: “If you do not answer Salih today, he will indeed disgrace us.” Then they called him and said: “O Salih, call them.” He called them, but they did not answer him. He said to them: “O my people, the forenoon has passed, and I do not see your gods answering me. So ask me, that I may call upon my God and He will answer you immediately.” Then seventy men among them, from their leaders and those looked up to, volunteered and said: “O Salih, we will ask you; if your Lord answers you, we will follow you and respond to you, and all the people of our town will pledge allegiance to you.” Salih (peace be upon him) said to them: “Ask me whatever you wish.” They said: “Lead us to this mountain,” and the mountain was near them. Salih went with them; when they reached the mountain they said: “O Salih, call upon your Lord to bring forth for us, right now from this mountain, a she-camel, reddish, fair, woolly, ten-month-pregnant, with a distance between her two sides of a mile.” Salih said to them: “You have asked me for something great upon me, but easy for my Lord, Majestic, Mighty and Most High.” So Salih asked Allah, Blessed and Exalted, for that. The mountain split with a fissure that almost made their wits fly when they heard it, then the mountain shook violently like a woman seized by labor. Suddenly her head emerged upon them from that fissure; her neck was not yet complete before she lowed, then the rest of her body came forth, then she stood upright upon the earth. When they saw that, they said: “O Salih, how swiftly your Lord has answered you! Call upon your Lord to bring forth her young one for us.” He asked Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and she cast it forth, and it toddled around her. He said to them: “O my people, is anything left (to demand)?” They said: “No. Take us back to our people, that we may inform them of what we have seen and they will believe in you.” So they returned. But before the seventy reached (their people), sixty-four of them had turned back, saying: “Sorcery and lies.” When they reached the assembly, six said: “Truth,” and the rest said: “Lies and sorcery.” They then dispersed on that (disagreement), and thereafter one of the six wavered, and he was among those who hamstrung her.” Ibn Mahbub said: I related this hadith to one of our companions called Sa‘id ibn Yazid, and he informed me that he had seen the mountain from which she came forth in al-Sham. He said: “I saw that her flank had scraped the mountain and her side had left a mark in it, and there was another mountain between it and this one at a distance of a mile.”

- 99-/5133 And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad, from ‘Ali ibn al-‘Abbas, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I said to him: “‘Thamud rejected the warners. So they said: What! shall we follow a single mortal from among us? Most surely we shall in that case be in sure error and distress. Has the Reminder been made to light upon him from among us? Nay, he is an insolent liar.’” He said: “This was regarding how they belied Salih. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has never destroyed a people until He sends to them beforehand the messengers, thereby establishing the proof against them. So Allah sent to them Salih, and he called them to Allah, but they did not answer him and rebelled against him, and they said: ‘We will never believe you until you bring forth for us from this rock a she-camel ten-month-pregnant,’ and that rock was one they venerated and worshiped; they would slaughter at it at the head of every year and gather at it. They said to him: ‘If you are—as you claim—a prophet and a messenger, then call upon your God to bring forth for us from this solid rock a ten-month-pregnant she-camel,’ and Allah brought it forth just as they had asked of him. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed to him: ‘O Salih, say to them: Surely Allah has assigned to this she-camel a share of water for a day, and for you a share of water for a day.’ When it was her day to drink, she would drink the water of that day; then they would milk her and no small one or great one would remain but that he drank of her milk on that day. Then, when night came and they awoke, they would go to their water and drink from it that day, and the she-camel would not drink that day. They remained thus for as long as Allah willed. Then they rebelled against Allah; some of them went to others and said: ‘Hamstring this she-camel and be rid of her; we are not content that we have one day to drink and she has one day to drink.’ They said: ‘Who will undertake to kill her? We will assign him a reward, whatever he wishes.’ Thereupon there came to them a man, red, fair, blue-eyed, born of fornication, with no known father, called Qudar, wretched among the wretched, an evil omen upon them. They set a reward for him. When the she-camel headed to the water which she used to frequent, he left her until she drank and was returning. He sat in her path and struck her with the sword a blow that did nothing; then he struck her another blow and killed her, and she collapsed to the ground on her side. Her young fled until he ascended the mountain and cried thrice to the sky. The people of Salih came, and none of them remained but that he shared in striking her. They divided up her meat among themselves, and no small one or great one among them remained but that he ate from her. When Salih saw that, he came to them and said: ‘O my people, what drove you to what you did? Have you disobeyed the command of your Lord?’ Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed to Salih (peace be upon him): ‘Your people have transgressed and rebelled; they have killed a she-camel I sent to them as a proof against them. There was no harm upon them in it; rather for them was the greatest benefit from it. So say to them: I am sending upon them My chastisement after three days. If they repent and turn back, I will accept their repentance and avert (the punishment) from them; and if they do not repent and do not turn back, I will send upon them My chastisement on the third day.’ Salih (peace be upon him) came to them and said: ‘O my people, I am the messenger of your Lord to you, and He says to you: If you repent, turn back, and seek forgiveness, I will forgive you and turn in mercy to you.’ When he said that to them, they were more insolent than ever and more vile, and said: ‘O Salih, bring us what you threaten us with, if you are of the truthful.’ He said: ‘O my people, tomorrow morning your faces will be yellow; on the second day your faces will be red; and on the third day your faces will be black.’ When it was the first day, they awoke and their faces were yellow; some of them went to others and said: ‘What Salih told you has come to you.’ The most insolent among them said: ‘We will not hear Salih’s speech nor accept his word, even if it be tremendous.’ When it was the second day, they awoke and their faces were red; some went to others and said: ‘O people, what Salih told you has come to you.’ The most insolent among them said: ‘Even if we were all destroyed, we would not listen to Salih’s word nor abandon our gods which our fathers used to worship,’ and they did not repent nor turn back. When it was the third day, they awoke and their faces were black. Some went to others and said: ‘O people, what Salih told you has come to you.’ The most insolent among them said: ‘What Salih told us has indeed come to us.’ When it was midnight, Jibril (peace be upon him) came to them and cried out at them a cry which tore through their ears, split their hearts, and rent their livers. During those three days they had shrouded and embalmed themselves, knowing that the chastisement would descend upon them. They all died in the twinkling of an eye, their small and their great; there remained neither bleating nor lowing, nor anything at all, but that Allah destroyed it. They awoke in their dwellings and lying-places dead to a man. Then Allah sent down upon them, along with the Cry, fire from the sky, and it burned them all. And that was their story.”]

- 99-/5134 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Ibn Faddal, from Dawud ibn Farqad, from Abu Yazid al-Hammar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Allah, Most High, sent four angels for the destruction of the people of Lot: Jibril, Mika’il, Israfil, and Karub’il (peace be upon them). They passed by Ibrahim (peace be upon him) while they were veiled, and they greeted him, but he did not recognize them; he perceived goodly appearance and said: ‘No one shall serve these but I myself,’ for he was a man of hospitality. He roasted for them a fat calf until he cooked it through, then brought it near to them. When he set it before them, he saw their hands not reaching out to it; he found them strange and felt a fear of them. When Jibril (peace be upon him) saw that, he uncovered the turban from his face and head, and Ibrahim (peace be upon him) recognized him and said: ‘Is it you?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ His wife Sarah passed by, and he gave her the good news of Ishaq, and after Ishaq, Ya‘qub. She said what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said, and they answered her with what is in the Mighty Book. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to them: ‘For what have you come?’ They said: ‘For the destruction of the people of Lot.’ He said to them: ‘If there are a hundred of the believers in it…’” (continues).
