Al-Isra Ayah 81
99-/— The meaning is “Mecca.” As for “and grant me from Yourself an authority to help me,” he said: God indeed answered His Prophet’s (peace be upon him and his family) supplication, and He gave him Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) as an authority who would aid him against his enemies.
(Qur’an 17:81) — And say: The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished; surely falsehood is a vanishing (thing). [M. H. Shakir]
99-/6526 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub—through his chain—to Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), concerning His saying, “And say: The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished; surely falsehood is a vanishing (thing),” he said: When the Qa’im rises, he will make the dominion of falsehood disappear.

99-/6527 _2- Sharaf al-Din al-Najafi said: Shaykh al-Tusi (may God have mercy on him) mentioned a hadith through his chain from Nu‘aym b. Hukaym, from Abu Maryam al-Thaqafi, from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) set out with me until he brought me to the Ka‘ba. He said to me, “Sit.” So I sat beside the Ka‘ba, and the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) climbed onto my shoulder. Then he said to me, “Stand up,” so I stood. When he saw weakness in me he said, “Sit,” so he came down. Then he said to me, “O Ali, climb onto my shoulder,” so I climbed onto his shoulder. Then the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) stood up with me, and it seemed to me that if I willed I could reach the horizon of the sky. I climbed to the top of the Ka‘ba and the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) stepped aside and said to me, “Cast down their greatest idol,” and it was of brass, pegged to the ground with iron stakes. The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) said to me, “Work at it,” so I worked at it while the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) was saying, “The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished; surely falsehood is a vanishing (thing)” (Qur’an 17:81). I continued to work at it until I got hold of it. He said to me, “Hurl it,” so I hurled it and it shattered. Then I climbed down from atop the Ka‘ba, and I and the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) departed, fearing that someone from Quraysh or others might see us.

99-/6528 _3- Ibn Babawayh: Abu ‘Ali Ahmad b. Yahya al-Mukattib narrated to us, who said: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Warraq narrated to us, who said: Bishr b. Sa‘id b. Qilawayh, the judge at al-Rafiqa, narrated to us, who said: ‘Abd al-Jabbar b. Kathir al-Tamimi al-Yamani narrated to us, who said: I heard Muhammad b. Harb al-Hilali, the governor of Medina, say: I asked Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him), and said to him, “O son of the Messenger of God, I have a question within me that I wish to ask you.” He said, “If you wish, I will inform you of your question before you ask me, and if you wish, then ask.”
99-/6528 _3- I said to him, “O son of the Messenger of God, by what do you know what is in my mind before I ask?” He said, “By discernment and insight. Have you not heard the saying of God, ‘Surely in this are signs for those who examine’ (Qur’an 15:75, M. H. Shakir), and the saying of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family), ‘Beware the insight of the believer, for he looks with the light of God’?”
99-/6528 _3- I said to him, “O son of the Messenger of God, then inform me of my question.” He said, “You wished to ask me about why the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) could not be borne by Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) when the idols were removed from the roof of the Ka‘ba, despite Ali’s strength and power, and what had been displayed of his strength in uprooting the gate of Qamus at Khaybar and throwing it behind him forty cubits—when forty men could not carry it—while the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) used to ride a she-camel, a horse, and a donkey, and rode al-Buraq on the night of the Mi‘raj, all of which are inferior to Ali (peace be upon him) in strength and might.”

99-/6528 _3- He said, “By God, this is what I wanted to ask you, O son of the Messenger of God—so inform me.” He said, “Yes. It is by the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) that Ali (peace be upon him) was ennobled, elevated, and through him he attained to extinguishing the fire of polytheism and nullifying every deity besides God, Mighty and Majestic. Had the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) mounted upon Ali to cast down the idols, then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) would have been elevated and ennobled by Ali and would have attained to the casting down of the idols—and if that were so, he would be better than him. Do you not see that Ali (peace be upon him) said, ‘When I ascended the back of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family), I was honored and raised up, such that if I had willed to reach the heaven, I would have reached it’? Do you not know that the lamp is that by which one is guided in darkness, and that its branch issues from its root? And Ali (peace be upon him) said, ‘I am from Ahmad (may God bless him and his family) like light from light.’ Do you not know that Muhammad and Ali (peace be upon them) were a light before God, Mighty and Majestic, two thousand years before the creation of the creatures? When the angels saw that light, they saw it had a root from which a radiant ray branched. They said, ‘Our God and our Master, what is this light?’ God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed to them, ‘This is a light from My Light; its root is prophethood and its branch is imamate. As for prophethood, it is for Muhammad, My servant and My messenger; and as for imamate, it is for Ali, My proof and My friend. Were it not for them both, I would not have created My creation.’ Do you not know that the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) raised the hand of Ali (peace be upon him) at Ghadir Khumm until the people looked at the whiteness of their armpits, appointing him the master and imam of the Muslims? And that he carried al-Hasan and al-Husayn (peace be upon them) on the day of the enclosure of Banu al-Najjar, and when one of his companions said to him, ‘Hand one of them to me, O Messenger of God,’ he said, ‘What excellent riders! And their father is better than them.’ And that he (may God bless him and his family) once prolonged one of his prostrations while praying with his companions; when he finished, he was asked, ‘O Messenger of God, you prolonged this prostration,’ and he said, ‘My son mounted me, and I disliked to hasten until he came down’—by which he intended their elevation and ennoblement. So the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) is an imam and a prophet, while Ali (peace be upon him) is an imam but not a prophet or a messenger; thus he is not able to bear the burdens of prophethood.”
99-/6528 _3- Muhammad b. Harb al-Hilali said: I said to him, “Increase me, O son of the Messenger of God.” He said, “You are worthy of increase. The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) carried Ali (peace be upon him) on his back, intending thereby to show that he is the father of his progeny and the imam of the imams from his loins—just as he turned his cloak in the prayer for rain, intending by that to inform his companions that drought had turned to fertility.”

99-/6528 _3- I said to him, “Increase me, O son of the Messenger of God.” He said, “The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) carried Ali (peace be upon him), intending thereby to inform his people that he is the one who would lighten from the back of the Messenger of God what was upon him of debts and obligations, and to discharge on his behalf after him.”

99-/6528 _3- I said to him, “O son of the Messenger of God, increase me.” He said, “He carried him to inform thereby that he had indeed carried him—and he carried none but one who is infallible, who bears no sin, so that his actions be, in the sight of the people, wisdom and correctness. The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) said to Ali (peace be upon him), ‘O Ali, God, Blessed and Exalted, has made me bear the sins of your Shia, then He forgave them for me,’ and that is His saying, ‘That Allah may forgive you your former and latter faults’ (Qur’an 48:2, Shakir). And when God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him, ‘O you who believe! Take care of your souls’ (Qur’an 5:105), the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) said, ‘O people, take care of your souls; he who errs cannot harm you when you are guided’ (Qur’an 5:105, Shakir). ‘Ali is my self and my brother. Obey Ali, for he is purified, infallible; he neither goes astray nor is wretched.’ Then he recited this verse: ‘Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn back, then upon him rests only that with which he is charged, and upon you rests that with which you are charged; and if you obey him, you will be guided; and naught is incumbent on the Messenger but a plain delivering (of the message)’ (Qur’an 24:54, Shakir).”

99-/6528 _3- Muhammad b. Harb al-Hilali said: Then Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “O governor, were I to inform you of all the meanings the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) intended by carrying Ali (peace be upon him) when the idols were cast down from the roof of the Ka‘ba, you would say, ‘Ja‘far b. Muhammad is insane.’ Suffice you of that what you have heard.” I rose to him, kissed his head, and said to him, “Allah knows best where to place His message.”

99-/6529 _4- Ibn Shahr Ashub: Abu Bakr al-Shirazi mentioned in “Nuzul al-Qur’an fi Sha’n Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him)”—from Qatadah, from Ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah said to me: We entered Mecca with the Prophet (may God bless him and his family), and in the House and around it were three hundred and sixty idols. The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) commanded regarding them, and I cast them all down on their faces. Upon the House there was a tall idol called Hubal. The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) looked at Ali (peace be upon him) and said to him, “O Ali, will you mount me or shall I mount you so that I may cast Hubal from the top of the Ka‘ba?” He (peace be upon him) said, “O Messenger of God, rather you mount me.” He (peace be upon him) said, “When he sat upon my back, I could not carry him due to the weight of the Message. I said, ‘O Messenger of God, rather I will mount you.’ He laughed, came down, lowered his back, and I stood upon it. By Him who split the seed and created the soul, had I wished to hold the sky, I would have held it in my hand. I cast Hubal from atop the Ka‘ba, and God revealed: ‘And say: The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished’ (Qur’an 17:81).”

99-/6531 _6- Al-Sayyid al-Radi, in his book “al-Manaqib al-Fakhirah fi al-‘Itrah al-Tahirah,” through his chain from Mujahid, from Ibn ‘Abbas: The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) was entering the Ka‘ba, and there were small water-skins belonging to Ibn Mas‘ud hanging there. He said to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), “O Ali, bring me a water-skin from those water-skins.” He brought him one, and he drank from it and performed ablution. Then he looked at Ibn Mas‘ud and said to him, “What is this staleness that I find in your water-skin?” Ibn Mas‘ud said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. Water in Mecca is heavy for me, so I took some dates and rubbed them in my water-skins to make the water pleasant.” He (may God bless him and his family) said, “It is lawful, and the water is pure.” Then he rose, took the key from Shaybah, and opened the door. Al-‘Abbas b. ‘Abd al-Muttalib said, “O Messenger of God, am I not your uncle and the counterpart of your father?” He said, “Yes. What is your need, O uncle?” He said, “Give me the key of the Ka‘ba.” He said, “It is yours, O uncle.” Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said, “God conveys to you peace and says to you to render trusts to their owners.” So he took back the key from al-‘Abbas and returned it to Shaybah. The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) entered the Ka‘ba and found an image of Abraham (peace be upon him). He said, “Do not worship images and statues, for God, Mighty and Majestic, detests them and detests their maker,” and he began tearing them down with the edge of his cloak. When he came out, he said to Shaybah, “Close the door.” Then he raised his head and there was an idol on the roof of the Ka‘ba. He said to Ali (peace be upon him), “O Ali, how can I deal with this idol?” He said, “O Messenger of God, I will kneel for you; step upon my back and take hold of it.” The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) said, “O Ali, were my community from first to last to strive to carry a single limb of mine, they would not be able. But come near to me, O Ali.” He said, “So I came near to him, and he struck his hand to my shins and lifted me from the ground; he stood upright with me until I was upon his shoulders. He said to me, ‘O Ali, name [God] and take it.’ I took the idol and struck it upon the ground, and it shattered into pieces, thrice.” The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) said, “O Ali, what do you see while you are upon my shoulders?” I said, “Only good—may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. If I wished to touch the sky with my hand, I could.” He said to me, “O Ali, may God add honor to your honor.” Then he slipped out from beneath me, and I fell to the ground and laughed. He said, “What makes you laugh, O Ali?” I said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. I fell from the top of the Ka‘ba to the ground, and I did not feel pain from the fall.” He said, “O Ali, how would you feel pain when Muhammad carried you and Gabriel (peace be upon him) set you down?” The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) went on, and al-‘Abbas boasted, “I am the chief of Quraysh, the noblest of them in lineage, the most splendid in mount, and the custodianship of the pilgrims’ watering place is in my hand; none but I attends to it.” Shaybah said, “No; rather I am the chief of Quraysh, and the custodianship of the Ka‘ba is in my hand; none but I attends to it.” Ali (peace be upon him) said, “You both have angered me by your statement. I am your chief, and the chief of the people of the earth after the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family). I am the one who struck your faces until you believed and acknowledged that Muhammad is the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family).” They became angry at his words and came to the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) and informed him of what Ali (peace be upon him) had said to them. Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said, “O Muhammad, the Truth conveys to you peace, and says to you: Say to Shaybah and al-‘Abbas, ‘What! Do you make the giving of drink to the pilgrims and the guarding of the Sacred Mosque as (equal to him) who believes in Allah and the Last day and strives hard in the way of Allah? They are not equal with Allah’ (Qur’an 9:19, Shakir). O Muhammad—Ali is better than both of them.”
