The Special Honors Granted to Him (a.s.) Alongside the Violations of His Sanctity
The Special Honors Granted to Him (a.s.) Alongside the Violations of His Sanctity
The special honors that were decreed for that noble one (Imam Husain (a.s.)) occurred alongside the violations of sanctity committed against him, either by the violator himself or by others at the same time as that violation, in such a manner that the dignity of those honors overcame the humiliation of those violations. For Allah, the Bestower of Favors, has not desired humiliation for His friends, lest it become a cause for hearts turning away from them. Thus, even if they appeared weak and insignificant due to their complete independence from worldly things, they were in reality great and honored.
Imam Husain (a.s.) possesses a unique distinction in this regard. The first person who desired his killing was Muʿāwiyah, yet he instructed Yazid to honor Imam Husain (a.s.). In the testament that he wrote to him, it was written:
“I fear for you concerning Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn ʿAli (a.s.). If you gain power over him, then observe his right, for he is the beloved grandson of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.).” [465]
The translator says: Apparently, he feared that because of this matter the people would revolt against him and his rule would not be completed. Therefore, he was merely observing outward considerations, not that he intended to honor Allah and His Messenger (s.a.w.a.)—end of statement.
Likewise, the first person whom Yazid ordered to kill Imam Husain (a.s.) was the governor of Madinah, and he said:
“I seek refuge in Allah from being a partner in the blood of Imam Husain (a.s.).” [466]
And when the accursed Ibn Saʿd was ordered to wage war against that master, he recited verses whose meaning is:
“Whenever I reflect, I find myself caught between two dangers: either I abandon the governorship of Rayy, or I shed the blood of Imam Husain (a.s.) and become a sinner. The governorship of Rayy is the utmost of my hopes and desires and the light of my eyes, while killing Imam Husain (a.s.) is a cause for entering the Fire of Hell.” [467]
And the accursed Shimr showed a form of respect when he was inciting the army to attack, saying:
“Imam Husain (a.s.) is the equal of a noble man, and being killed by his hand is no disgrace.” [468]
Even at the time of killing him, he showed a form of acknowledgment through several statements. One of them was:
“I kill you while knowing that my adversary is the God, the Most High, of ʿAli (a.s.).” [469]
And the one who carried his blessed head to Ibn Ziyad expressed a form of respect when he said:
“Fill my saddlebags with silver and gold, for I have killed a noble master. I have killed the best of people in both mother and father.”
Then that accursed one ordered his execution. [470]
Those who trampled the blessed body with horses also expressed a form of acknowledgment through several verses that they recited before Ibn Ziyad. [471]
And Yazid likewise showed a form of respect when the blessed head was placed before him. [472]
As for the honors that occurred alongside the violation of sanctity from people other than the violators themselves, there are several examples.
Among them is that when an accursed man insulted Imam Husain (a.s.) and said:
“O Imam Husain (a.s.), rejoice in the Fire!”
At that very moment his horse reared up, his foot became caught in the stirrup, and the horse dragged him until it threw him into a trench of fire, from which he proceeded to the fire of Hell. [473]
Another insulted him and said:
“O Imam Husain (a.s.), what sanctity do you have from the Prophet (s.a.w.a.)?”
He was then afflicted such that he went to relieve himself, and a snake bit him. He rolled about in his own filth until he reached Hell. [474]
Another said to Imam Husain (a.s.):
“Look at the water. You shall not drink from it until you perish from thirst.”
Imam Husain (a.s.) said:
“O Allah, cause him to die thirsty.”
A condition then overtook that man in which he continuously cried out:
“Thirst! Thirst!”
He would drink entire water-skins full of water, yet still cry:
“Thirst!”
Until his stomach burst and he died from thirst. [475]
