Translation: They gave to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) their pure affection and their unalloyed obedience, and they bared their heads for loyalty to his friends and enmity toward his enemies, until, when the authority of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) waned, his enemies laid them low and other kings and those opposed to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) destroyed them. That is, by exposing themselves to the enemies of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family), they are ignorant fools. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Lo! surely they are the fools, but they do not know—those light of intellect and judgment who did not examine the matter of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) with due consideration, so as to recognize his prophethood and thus recognize, through him, the soundness of what he entrusted to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) of the affairs of religion and world. Thus, because they failed to reflect on the proofs of Allah, they remained ignorant and became fearful and apprehensive of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family), his kin, and of those who opposed them; they are not secure that he might prevail and they be destroyed along with him. Hence they are the fools, for by this hypocrisy they secured for themselves neither the love of [Muhammad and] the believers, nor the love of the Jews and the rest of the unbelievers, while they outwardly show to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) loyalty to him and to his brother ‘Ali, and enmity toward their enemies—the Jews and the Nasibis—just as they show to those enemies their enmity to Muhammad and ‘Ali—blessings of Allah be upon them both.

(Qur’an 2:14–15, M. H. Shakir):

And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their devils, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking. Allah shall pay them back their mockery, and He leaves them alone in their rebellion, blindly wandering on.

99-/336 _1- (al-Tafsīr al-mansūb ilā al-Imām al-‘Askarī 63/120) Imam Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: When those who broke the pledge—who colluded to oppose ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and to push the authority away from him—meet those who believe, they say: “We believe as you believe.” When they meet Salman, al-Miqdad, Abu Dharr, and ‘Ammar, they say to them: “We have believed in Muhammad, and we have submitted to him regarding the pledge to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and his virtue, and we have yielded to his command, just as you have believed.” The first of them, the second, the third, up to the ninth—at times they would meet along some of their paths with Salman and his companions; when they encountered them they were repelled by them and said: “These are the companions of the magician and the simpleton”—meaning Muhammad and ‘Ali (peace be upon them). Then some of them would say to others: “Beware of them, lest they catch from slips of your speech upon the ‘disbelief’ of Muhammad in what he said about ‘Ali, and then they carry tales about you, which would bring about your destruction.”

Then the first of them says: “Watch me, how I mock them and ward off their aggression from you.” When they meet, the first of them says: “Welcome, O Salman, son of Islam—about whom Muhammad, the master of mankind, said: ‘If the religion were suspended from the Pleiades, men from the sons of Persia would reach it; this—meaning you—is the best of them,’ and he said: ‘Salman is from us, the People of the House.’” Thus he paired him with Jibril (peace be upon him), who on the Day of the Cloak, when he said to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family): “And am I of you?” he said: “And you are of us,” until Jibril ascended to the highest kingdom, boasting to his own, saying: “Bravo! Bravo! And I am of the Household of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family).” Then he says to al-Miqdad: “Welcome, O Miqdad—you are the one of whom the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): ‘O ‘Ali, al-Miqdad is your brother in religion and has been cut from you, so it is as if he is part of you, out of love for you, hatred for your enemies, and loyalty to your friends. But the angels of the heavens and the veils love you even more than you love ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and are even more averse to your enemies than you are to the enemies of ‘Ali (peace be upon him); so bliss for you, then bliss for you!’” Then he says to Abu Dharr: “Welcome, O Abu Dharr—you are the one about whom the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘The dusty earth has not carried, nor the green sky shaded, anyone more truthful of tongue than Abu Dharr.’” It was asked: “By what did Allah Most High prefer him and honor him thus?” The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: “Because he preferred my brother ‘Ali, was in all circumstances his praiser, was an enemy to his haters and foes, and a loyal friend to his allies and loved ones. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will place him among the best of the dwellers of the Gardens, and he will be served by a number of maidservants, pages, and youths that none knows but Allah.” Then he says to ‘Ammar ibn Yasir: “Welcome and hello, O ‘Ammar—you have attained by loyalty to my brother, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family)—despite being serene and at ease, not going beyond the obligations and the prescribed practices of the other acts of worship—what the one who wears out his body night and day cannot attain—meaning the night in standing and the day in fasting—nor the one who expends his wealth, even were all the wealth of the world his. Welcome, for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) approved of you as a sincere ally for his brother ‘Ali and as an opponent on his behalf, and even informed that you would be killed out of love for him, and that on the Day of Resurrection you will be gathered among the best of his party. May Allah grant me success for deeds like yours and those of your companions—those devoted to serving the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) and my brother Muhammad ‘Ali, the Friend of Allah, showing enmity to their enemies with enmity, and purity of friendship to their friends with loyalty and following. Allah will make us happy on this day of ours when we meet you.” Then Salman and his companions accept their outward (show), as Allah Most High commanded, and pass by them.

Then the first says to his companions: “How did you find my mockery of these men, and my warding off their aggression from me and from you?” They say to him: “We shall remain well so long as you live for us.” He says to them: “Thus should be your treatment of them, until you seize upon an opportunity like this regarding them; for the intelligent, sensible one is he who swallows a choke until he attains the opportunity.” Then they return to their cronies—the rebellious hypocrites who share with them in accusing the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) of falsehood regarding what he conveyed to them from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, of the mention and preference of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and his appointment as Imam over all morally responsible persons. They say to them: “We are with you in what your souls have agreed upon—of pushing ‘Ali away from this authority, if anything befalls Muhammad. So let not what you hear from me of praising them deceive or terrify you, nor what you see of my accommodating them; we are only mocking them.” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “O Muhammad, Allah mocks them—He repays them the recompense of their mockery in this world and the next—and He prolongs them in their rebellion, wandering blindly.” He grants them respite and treats them with His forbearance, calls them to repentance, and promises them forgiveness if they repent—while they wander blindly, refraining from no evil, nor leaving off any harm to Muhammad and ‘Ali (blessings of Allah be upon them) that they can deliver to them except that they deliver it. The Scholar (peace be upon him) said: As for Allah’s “mocking” them in this world: although He causes them to be carried on the outward rulings of the Muslims due to their showing what they show of hearing, obedience, and conformity, He commands the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) to allude against them such that it is not hidden from the sincere who are meant by that allusion, and He commands that they be cursed. And as for His “mocking” them in the Hereafter: it is that when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, settles them in the abode of curse and humiliation and punishes them with those wondrous kinds of torment, and settles these believers in the Gardens in the presence of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family), the intimate of the Sovereign Judge—He will show them those mockers who used to mock them in the world, so that they may see what they are in of astonishing curses and marvelous retributions; their delight and joy in gloating over them will be as their delight and joy in their bliss in the Gardens of their Lord. The believers recognize those unbelievers and hypocrites by their names and descriptions: among them are those between the fangs of its serpents, chewing and devouring them; among them those under the whips of its wardens, their columns and iron mallets falling from their hands upon them, intensifying their punishment and magnifying their grief and penalty; among them those who are drowned and dragged in its boiling seas; among them those in its ghislīn and gassāq, its wardens driving them in it; and among them those in the other kinds of its punishments.

The unbelievers and hypocrites look on and see those believers—whom in the world they used to mock on account of their devotion to Muhammad and ‘Ali and their family (blessings be upon them)—and they see some of them turning on their couches, some grazing among its fruits, some in its chambers, or luxuriating in its gardens and pleasure-places, with the maidens of wide eyes, attendants, boys, maidservants, and pages standing before them and circling in service around them, and the angels of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, coming to them from their Lord with gifts and honors and wondrous presents, offerings, and acts of beneficence, saying to them: Peace be on you because you were constant, how excellent, is then, the issue of the abode (Qur’an 13:24, M. H. Shakir). Then these believers, looking down upon those unbelievers and hypocrites, say: “O so-and-so, O so-and-so, O so-and-so”—calling them by their names—“what is the matter with you, that you remain in the stations of your disgrace? Come to us, and we will open for you the gates of the Gardens so that you may be delivered from your torment and join us in its bliss.” They say: “Woe to us! How can this be for us?” The believers say: “Look at the gates.” They look, and behold, gates of the Gardens are opened that appear to them to be toward Hell wherein they are being punished, and they suppose they will be able to make their way out to them. So they take to swimming in its boiling seas and to running from before its wardens, who overtake them and strike them with their columns, iron mallets, and whips. They continue like that, moving along there while these kinds of torment touch them, until when they are able to reach those gates, they find them walled up against them, and the wardens roll them down with their columns and cast them headlong into the midst of the Blaze. Meanwhile those who are enjoying bliss recline on their couches in their assemblies, laughing at them and mocking them. That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Allah mocks them; and His saying: So today those who believe shall laugh at the unbelievers; On thrones, they will look (Qur’an 83:34–35, M. H. Shakir).

Translation: 99-/337 _2- (al-Manāqib 3:94) Ibn Shahr-Āshūb—from al-Baqir (peace be upon him): “It was revealed about three men—when the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) proclaimed the guardianship for the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)—they outwardly displayed faith and satisfaction with that; but when they were alone with the enemies of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), they said: ‘We are with you; we are only mocking.’”

Translation: 99-/338 _3- (al-Manāqib 3:94; from Tafsīr al-Hudhail and Muqātil) And from (the Tafsir of al-Hudhail and Muqatil), from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah—in a long report—“We are only mocking.”

“[Mocking] ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.” So Allah, Most High, said: “Allah mocks them,” meaning: He will recompense them in the Hereafter with the recompense for their mocking the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).

99-/339 _4- (al-Manāqib 3:94) Ibn ‘Abbas said: When it is the Day of Resurrection, Allah Most High will command the creation to pass over the Bridge; the believers will pass on to Paradise, while the hypocrites will fall into Hell. Allah will say: “O Malik, mock the hypocrites in Hell.” So Malik will open a door in Hell toward Paradise and call out to them: “O company of hypocrites, here, here! Climb up from Hell to Paradise!” The hypocrites will swim in the seas of Hell for seventy autumns. When they reach that door and are about to exit, it will be shut in their faces, and another door will be opened for them toward Paradise from another place; he will call out: “From this door go out to Paradise!” They will swim as before, and when they come to it, it will be shut before them, and another will be opened—and so it will be forever and ever.

99-/340 _5- (al-Tawhīd 1/163) Ibn Bābawayh said: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Yunus al-Mu‘ādhī narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘id al-Kūfī al-Hamdānī narrated to us, who said: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddāl narrated to us, from his father, from al-Ridā (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Allah mocks them.” He said: “Surely Allah, Blessed and Exalted, does not mock; rather, He recompenses them with the recompense of mockery.”

99-/341 _6- (Tafsīr al-Qummī 1:34) ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: “And He leaves them alone in their rebellion, blindly wandering”—that is, He leaves them.

(Qur’an 2:16, M. H. Shakir):

These are they who buy error for the right direction, so their bargain shall bring no gain, nor are they the followers of the right direction.

99-/342 _1- (al-Tafsīr al-mansūb ilā al-Imām al-‘Askarī 64/125) The Scholar Imam (peace be upon him) said: “Those are they who purchased error—they sold the religion of Allah and took in exchange for it unbelief in Allah. So their trade did not profit—that is, they gained nothing in their trade in the Hereafter, because they purchased the Fire and its kinds of punishment in place of the Garden which had been prepared for them if they had believed—and they were not guided to truth and correctness.”
