S 29 Ayat 1 to 6
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Alif Lam Mim. Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried? And certainly We tried those before them, so Allah will certainly know those who are true and He will certainly know the liars. Or do they who work evil think that they will escape Us? Evil is it that they judge! Whoever hopes to meet Allah, the term appointed by Allah will then most surely come; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. And whoever strives hard, he strives only for his own soul; most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above need of the worlds. (Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt, 29:1-6)
99-/8227 _1- Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated: It is reported that the Commander of the Faithful (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said in a sermon—and he mentioned the sermon until he (peace be upon him) said:
“Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, tests His servants with various kinds of hardships, and engages them in different forms of struggle, and tries them with diverse adversities—so as to remove arrogance from their hearts, to instill humility within their souls, and to make these trials gates leading to His bounty, means and signs [1] of His pardon and mercy. Just as He said:
(Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt, 29:2-3, M. H. Shakir Translation: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried? And certainly We tried those before them, so Allah will certainly know those who are true and He will certainly know the liars).

H. Shakir]” He (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was eager for ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) to be established over the people after him. However, with Allah, the matter was contrary to that.” Then he (peace be upon him) referred to His saying, Mighty and Majestic: (Alif Lam Mim. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) called him, saying: “O ʿAlī.” He replied: “At your service.” The Prophet said: “Come closer to me.” When he drew near, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: “O ʿAlī, tonight I spent the night where you see me, and I asked my Lord for one thousand needs, and He granted them to me. I asked the same for you, and He granted them to me. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is this trial (الْفِتْنَةُ)?” He said: “O ʿAlī, you will be tested, and others will be tested through you. You will be opposed, so prepare yourself for opposition.”**
99-/8236 _10- Al-Ṭabrisī narrated from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him):
(They will be tried: They will be tested in themselves and their wealth.)

/8237 _11- Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated: He said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyā, from Ayyūb ibn Sulaymān, from Muḥammad ibn Marwān, from al-Kalbī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
The saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: (Or do those who work evil think that they will escape Us? Evil is it that they judge!) [Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt, 29:4, M. H. Shakir] was revealed regarding ʿUtbah, Shaybah, and al-Walīd ibn ʿUtbah; they were the ones who faced ʿAlī, Ḥamzah, and ʿUbaydah in combat. And regarding them was revealed: (Whoever hopes to meet Allah, the term appointed by Allah will then most surely come; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. And whoever strives hard, he strives only for his own soul) [Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt, 29:5-6, M. H. Shakir] He (Ibn ʿAbbās) said: regarding ʿAlī (peace be upon him) and his two companions.

99-/8238 _12- And from the path of the opponents: Regarding His saying, the Exalted:
(Alif Lam Mim. Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried?) [Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt, 29:1-2, M. H. Shakir]
ʿAlī (peace be upon him) said: “I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is this trial (الْفِتْنَةُ)?” He said: “O ʿAlī, it is concerning you, and indeed you will be opposed, so prepare yourself for opposition.”
And ʿAlī (peace be upon him) said: (Then We gave the Book as inheritance to those whom We chose from among Our servants) [Surah Fāṭir, 35:32, M. H. Shakir] “We are those ones.”**
