115. The International Martyr
The renowned preacher and unparalleled orator of Azerbaijan, the late Mīrzā Ḥasan Nāṣirzādah, who passed away on 11 Shawwāl 1400 AH (corresponding to 31/5/1359 Shamsī), narrated the following from the pulpit:
One ʿĀshūrāʾ day, I was invited to the home of a Christian family. When I entered the gathering, I saw hundreds of Christian women present, and in the center of the room, they had placed a cradle with an infant inside. The gathering had been organized for the healing of that child, whom the doctors had given up on.
I began by speaking about verses of the Qur’an, narrations, and ethical topics. When the time came for reciting a maqtal (elegy), I wondered what kind of elegy I could read for this gathering of Christians. Then I remembered: we have an international martyr — and he is Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (a.s.) — for in no religion or creed is an infant held guilty.
I recited the elegy of Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (ʿa), and they wept profusely. The gathering became deeply emotional.
The next morning, the host brought me a full set of clothing — including a turban, a piece of fabric for a cloak, a shirt, socks, and shoes — and said: “Our vow was fulfilled and accepted.”
