Al-Hijr Ayah 48-72
Translation: Al-Hijr, verses 48–72.
(Qur’an 15:47) M. H. Shakir: And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their hearts; (they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.
Translation: Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said regarding “as brethren on raised couches, facing each other”: “Those who love one another for the sake of Allah will look at one another.”
(Qur’an 15:47) M. H. Shakir: And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their hearts; (they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.
Translation: Ibn al-Maghazili al-Shafi‘i in al-Manaqib, with his chain up to Zayd ibn Arqam, said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and he said: “I will make a bond of brotherhood among you just as Allah made brotherhood among the angels.” Then he said to ‘Ali: “You are my brother and my companion.” Then he recited this verse: “as brethren on raised couches, facing each other.” “Those who are intimate friends for Allah’s sake will look at one another.”
(Qur’an 15:48) M. H. Shakir: Toil shall not afflict them in it, nor shall they be ever ejected from it.
(Qur’an 15:72) M. H. Shakir: By your life! they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.
Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “Toil shall not afflict them in it, nor shall they be ever ejected from it … by your life! they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.” [verses 48–72]
(Qur’an 15:48) M. H. Shakir: Toil shall not afflict them in it, nor shall they be ever ejected from it.
(Qur’an 15:49–50) M. H. Shakir: Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that My punishment—it is the painful punishment.
(Qur’an 15:51) M. H. Shakir: And inform them of the guests of Ibrahim.
Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His saying, the Exalted, “Toil shall not afflict them in it,” meaning fatigue and hardship. His saying, the Exalted, “Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that My punishment—it is the painful punishment; and inform them of the guests of Ibrahim.” We have written their account in Surat Hud (peace be upon him) [1], and here we add from the route of al-‘Ayyashi [2].
(Qur’an 15:66) M. H. Shakir: And We made known to him this decree, that the roots of these shall be cut off in the morning.
(Qur’an 15:72) M. H. Shakir: By your life! they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.
Translation: And his saying, the Exalted, “And We made known to him this decree,” that is, We informed him that the last remnant of these—meaning the people of Lot—would be cut off in the morning. And His saying, “By your life!” meaning “By your life, O Muhammad!” “they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.” This is a distinction for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) over the prophets.

(Qur’an 15:53) M. H. Shakir: They said: Be not afraid, surely we give you the good news of a boy, possessing knowledge.
(Qur’an 37:101) M. H. Shakir: So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance.
Translation: Al-‘Ayyashi, from Muhammad ibn al-Qasim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Sarah said to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): ‘You have grown old; if only you would pray to Allah to grant you a child so our eyes may find coolness; for Allah has taken you as a friend, and He answers your prayer, if Allah wills.’ So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked his Lord to grant him ‘a boy possessing knowledge’ [3]. Allah revealed to him: ‘I am granting you a ‘forbearing’ boy, then I will test you concerning him with obedience to Me.’ Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Ibrahim remained after the glad tidings for three years; then the glad tidings from Allah of Isma‘il came to him once again after three years.”

(Qur’an 59:9; 64:16) M. H. Shakir: and whoever is saved from the greediness of his soul, these it is that are the successful.
Translation: From Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him, “May Allah set you right, did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) seek refuge from miserliness?” He said: “Yes, O Abu Muhammad—every morning and evening. And we seek refuge in Allah from miserliness. Indeed Allah says in His Book: ‘and whoever is saved from the greediness of his soul, these it is that are the successful.’ And I will inform you about the outcome of miserliness: The people of Lot were the people of a town who were miserly, tight-fisted with food, so Allah afflicted them with a disease in their private parts for which there is no cure.”
Translation: I said: “And what did He requite them with?” He said: “The town of Lot’s people lay on the route of the caravans to al-Sham and Egypt. Travelers would stop with them and they would host them. When that became frequent, they were straitened by it out of miserliness and vileness. Their miserliness led them to, when a guest came down among them, disgrace him—not out of desire for that—but they would do that to the guest so that wayfarers would shun them. Their affair spread among the towns and travelers avoided them. So miserliness bequeathed them a calamity they could not avert from themselves, without any desire for it, until they began to seek it from men in the lands and would even pay them for it. What disease is more contagious than miserliness, more harmful in outcome, or more obscene in the sight of Allah?”
(Qur’an 51:35–36) M. H. Shakir: So We brought out such believers as were there in it. But We did not find therein save a (single) house of those who submitted (the Muslims).
Translation: Abu Basir said: I said to him: “May Allah set you right, were all the people of Lot’s town afflicted like this?” He said: “Yes, except for one household of the Muslims. Do you not hear His saying: ‘So We brought out such believers as were there in it; but We did not find therein save a single house of those who submitted.’”
Translation: Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Lot remained among his people for thirty years, calling them to Allah and warning them of His punishment. They were a people who did not cleanse themselves after defecation nor purify themselves from major ritual impurity, while Lot and his household cleansed themselves and purified themselves. Lot was the son of the maternal aunt of Ibrahim, and Ibrahim was the son of the maternal aunt of Lot (peace be upon them both). The wife of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Sarah, was the sister of Lot (peace be upon him). Ibrahim and Lot (peace be upon them) were both commissioned prophets and warners. Lot (peace be upon him) was a generous, noble man who would host a guest when one came to him and would warn the guest about his people. When Lot’s people saw that, they said: ‘We forbid you concerning the people—do not host a guest who comes to you; if you do, we will disgrace your guest and humiliate you regarding him.’ When a guest came to Lot (peace be upon him) he would conceal his presence, fearing that his people would disgrace him, for Lot had no clan among them. Lot and Ibrahim (peace be upon them) expected the punishment to descend upon Lot’s people. Ibrahim and Lot (peace be upon them) had a noble station with Allah, Blessed and Exalted; whenever He willed to punish Lot’s people, He would be overtaken by the affection and friendship He had for Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and His love for Lot (peace be upon him), so He would keep watch over them on that account and delay their punishment.”
Translation: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “When Allah’s wrath, Exalted is He, intensified against Lot’s people, and He determined and decreed their punishment, He wished to compensate Ibrahim (peace be upon him) for the punishment of Lot’s people with a forbearing boy, so that he might find solace for his affliction at the destruction of Lot’s people. So Allah sent messengers to—
(Qur’an 11:69) M. H. Shakir: And certainly Our messengers came to Ibrahim with good news. They said: Peace. He said: Peace. So he made no delay in bringing a roasted calf.
(Qur’an 11:70) M. H. Shakir: But when he saw that their hands were not extended towards it he deemed them strange and conceived fear of them. They said: Fear not, surely we are sent to the people of Lut.
(Qur’an 15:53) M. H. Shakir: They said: Be not afraid, surely we give you the good news of a boy, possessing knowledge.
Translation: —Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to give him glad tidings of Isma‘il. They entered upon him at night, and he was startled by them and feared they might be thieves. When the messengers saw him frightened and anxious, they said: “Peace.” He said: “Peace.” He said: “Surely we are afraid of you.” They said: “Do not fear. Surely we give you the good news of a knowledgeable boy.”
(Qur’an 15:54–55) M. H. Shakir: He said: Do you give me good news (of a son) when old age has come upon me?—of what then do you give me good news! They said: We give you good news with truth, therefore be not of the despairing.
(Qur’an 15:58–60) M. H. Shakir: They said: Surely we are sent towards a guilty people, except Lut’s followers: We shall surely deliver them all, except his wife; We ordained that she shall surely be of those who remain behind.
(Qur’an 29:32) M. H. Shakir: He said: Surely in it is Lut. They said: We know well who is in it; we shall certainly deliver him and his followers, except his wife; she shall be of those who remain behind.
(Qur’an 11:77–81) M. H. Shakir: And when Our messengers came to Lut… They said: O Lut! surely we are messengers of your Lord; therefore, they shall by no means reach you; so remove your family in a part of the night and let none of you turn back, except your wife; surely that which will befall them shall befall her…
Translation: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “The ‘knowledgeable boy’ is Isma‘il, from Hajar. Ibrahim said to the messengers: ‘Do you give me good news when old age has come upon me; of what then do you give good news?’ They said: ‘We give you good news with truth, so do not be among the despairing.’ Ibrahim said to the messengers: ‘What is your mission after the glad tidings?’ They said: ‘We have been sent to a guilty people—the people of Lot. They were an immoral people—to warn them of the punishment of the Lord of the worlds.’ Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: So Ibrahim said to the messengers: ‘Surely Lot is in it.’ They said: ‘We know best who is in it; we shall surely deliver him and his family, except his wife; she shall be of those who remain behind.’ Then, when the messengers came to the family of Lot, he said: ‘You are a people unknown.’ They said: ‘Nay, we have come to you with that about which they doubted,’—meaning Allah’s punishment—‘to warn your people of the punishment. So set out with your family, O Lot, when seven days and nights have passed from this your day, in a part of the night [when half the night has passed], and let none of you look back, except your wife; surely what befell them shall befall her.’”
(Qur’an 11:69–73) M. H. Shakir: And certainly Our messengers came to Ibrahim with good news… and his wife was standing by, so she laughed; then We gave her the good news of Ishaq, and after Ishaq of Ya‘qub. She said: O wonder! shall I bear a son when I am an extremely old woman, and this my husband an extremely old man?… Surely He is Praised, Glorious.
Translation: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “So they communicated to Lot that decree: that the last remnant of these would be cut off in the morning. Then, on the eighth day at daybreak, Allah sent messengers ahead to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to give him glad tidings of Ishaq and to console him for the destruction of Lot’s people. That is Allah’s saying in Surat Hud: ‘And certainly Our messengers came to Ibrahim with good news…’ meaning a slaughtered, roasted, well-cooked calf. When he saw their hands not reaching it he deemed them strange and felt fear of them. They said: ‘Do not fear; surely we have been sent to the people of Lot’—‘and his wife was standing.’ Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: It means the wife of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Sarah, standing. So they gave her the good news of Ishaq and, after Ishaq, Ya‘qub—until His saying: ‘Surely He is Praised, Glorious.’”
(Qur’an 11:76) M. H. Shakir: O Ibrahim! leave off this; surely the decree of your Lord has come to pass, and surely there shall come to them a chastisement which cannot be averted.
Translation: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “When the glad tidings of Ishaq came, his fear left him, and he began to supplicate his Lord concerning Lot’s people and ask Him to remove the punishment from them. Allah said: ‘O Ibrahim! Leave off this; surely the decree of your Lord has come to pass, and surely there shall come to them a chastisement that cannot be turned back,’ after the sunrise of this very day of yours—a decisive decree not to be repelled.”
