Translation:

He mentioned the hadith [1]. From al-Fudayl ibn Yasār, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who looked at the people circumambulating the Ka‘bah and said: “Thus did they circumambulate in the Age of Ignorance. They were only commanded to circumambulate and then come forth to us, to inform us of their allegiance, and to present to us their support.” Then he recited this verse: “So make the hearts of some people yearn towards them,” and said: “The Family of Muhammad,” then said, “To us, to us.”

And the hadith of al-Bāqir (peace be upon him) with Qatādah has preceded, in the section Introduction to the Book [2]; and it will come under His saying, “And We made between them and the towns which We had blessed towns apparent, and We apportioned the journey therein: Travel through them nights and days in security” [3]. And it has preceded under His saying, “And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited,” from Sūrat Āl ‘Imrān, the hadith of Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) [4].

Qur’an reference within the hadith:

Shakir: Our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful.

Translation:

Qur’an reference:

Shakir: Our Lord! surely Thou knowest what we hide and what we make public, and nothing in the earth nor in the heaven is hidden from Allah.

Translation:

He said: “This is a word that the scribes altered. Ibrahim’s seeking forgiveness (peace be upon him) for his father was only due to a promise he had made to him, and indeed he said: ‘My Lord! forgive me and my two children,’ meaning Ismā‘īl and Isḥāq. And al-Hasan and al-Husayn, by Allah, are the two sons of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family).”

Translation:

‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: As for His saying, “Our Lord! forgive me and my parents,” he said: It was revealed as “and my offspring,” meaning Ismā‘īl and Isḥāq. And His saying, “And do not think Allah to be heedless of what the unjust do; He only respites them to a day when the eyes shall stare...” He said: Their eyes remain open from the terror of Hell; they cannot blink them. He said: “and their hearts are void,” meaning their hearts crack from the pounding. Then he said: “And warn the people, O Muhammad, of the day when the chastisement shall come to them; then those who did wrong will say, ‘Our Lord! respite us to a near term; we will respond to Your call and follow the messengers.’ ‘Did you not swear before—meaning you swore—that you would not perish, saying, “you have no passing away”?’ And ‘you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves,’ meaning those of the Banū Umayya who had perished; ‘and it became clear to you how We dealt with them, and We set forth for you parables. And they had indeed planned their plan, and with Allah is their plan; and if their plan were such as to make the mountains vanish,’” he said: the plotting of the sons of so-and-so.

Qur’an references within the report:

Shakir: And do not think Allah to be heedless of what the unjust do; He only respites them to a day when the eyes shall stare (in terror).

Shakir: Hastening forward, their heads upraised, their eyes not reverting to them and their hearts vacant.

Shakir (14:44): And warn people of the day when the chastisement shall come to them; then those who were unjust will say: Our Lord! respite us to a near term, we will respond to Thy call and follow the messengers. What! did you not swear before that there will be no passing away for you?

Shakir (14:45): And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves, and it was clear to you how We dealt with them and We made (them) examples for you.

Shakir (14:46): And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan were such that the mountains should pass away thereby.

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb: From Muhammad ibn Yahyā, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Sinān, from Abū al-Sabbāḥ ibn ‘Abd al-Hamīd, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “By Allah, what al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī (peace be upon them) did was better for this community than what the sun has risen upon. By Allah, about him [1] this verse was revealed: ‘Have you not seen those to whom it was said: Withhold your hands and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate?’ [2] It is nothing but obedience to the Imam. And they sought fighting; then when fighting was prescribed for them [3] with al-Husayn (peace be upon him), they said, ‘Our Lord! why hast Thou ordained fighting for us? Why didst Thou not grant us a delay to a near term?’ [4]—‘We will respond to Your call and follow the messengers’—they wished to delay that until the Qā’im (peace be upon him).”

Qur’an reference:

Shakir: Have you not seen those to whom it was said: Withhold your hands and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; but when fighting is prescribed for them, lo! a party of them fear men as they ought to have feared Allah, or (even) with a greater fear, and say: Our Lord! why hast Thou ordained fighting for us? Why didst Thou not grant us a delay to a near term? Say: The provision of this world is short, and the hereafter is better for him who guards (against evil); and you shall not be wronged the husk of a date stone.

Translation:

From Sa‘d ibn ‘Umar, from more than one of those present with Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), and a man said: “The house of Sālih and the house of ‘Īsā ibn ‘Alī have been established”—he mentioned the houses of the ‘Abbāsids—so a man said: “May Allah show them to us in ruin, or may He ruin them by our hands.” Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said to him: “Do not say this; rather, they will be the dwellings of the Qā’im and his companions. Have you not heard Allah say: ‘And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves’?”

From Jamīl ibn Darrāj, who said: I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) say: “And if their plotting were such that the mountains would vanish thereby—indeed, the plotting of Banū al-‘Abbās against the Qā’im is such that the hearts of men would vanish because of it.”

Translation:

From al-Hārith, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib (peace be upon him), who said: “Nimrod wanted to look upon the King of heaven. He took four vultures, reared them until they were sprightly, made a wooden chest, and put a man inside it. Then he tied the vultures’ legs to the legs of the chest and set them flying. He placed a pole in the middle of the chest and put meat at the top of the pole. When the vultures saw the meat, they flew and carried off the chest and the man, rising to the sky, and remained as long as Allah willed. Then the man put his head out of the chest and looked at the sky, and it was as it was; and he looked at the earth and saw the mountains only like ants. Then he stayed a while and looked at the sky, and it was as it was; and he looked at the earth and saw only water. Then he stayed a while and looked at the sky, and it was as it was; and he looked at the earth and saw nothing. When the meat descended to the lower part of the pole and the vultures sought the meat, the mountains heard the crash of the vultures and feared the affair of the heavens. This is His saying: ‘And if their plotting were such that the mountains would vanish thereby.’”

Qur’an reference:

Translation:

The Shaykh in his Amālī: He said: al-Husayn ibn Ibrāhīm al-Qazwīnī informed us, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh Muhammad ibn Wahbān narrated to us, who said: Abū al-Qāsim ‘Alī ibn Habashī narrated to us, who said: Abū al-Fadl al-‘Abbās ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, who said: my father narrated to us, who said: Ṣafwān ibn Yahyā narrated to us, from al-Husayn ibn Abī Ghundar, from Abū Basīr, who said: I heard Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) say: “Fear Allah, and adhere to obedience to your Imams. Say what they say, and be silent about what they are silent. For you are under the authority of those of whom Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘And if their plotting were such that the mountains would vanish thereby’—meaning the sons of al-‘Abbās. So fear Allah, for you are in a truce. Pray among their clans, attend their funerals, render trusts to them, and be diligent in the Hajj of this House; persist in it, for your persistence in Hajj repels from you the distresses of this world and the terrors of the Day of Resurrection.”
