Taha Ayah 121-122

“Words concerning Muhammad, and Ali, and Fatimah, and al‑Hasan, and al‑Husayn, and the Imams from their progeny. Thus it was revealed to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).”

[Quran 20:116] M. H. Shakir: And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis (did it not); he refused.

99-/7061) Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub—from al‑Husayn ibn Muhammad—from al‑Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad—from someone who informed him—from Ali ibn Ja‘far—said: I heard Abu’l‑Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) saw Taym, and ‘Adiyy, and Banu Umayyah ascending his pulpit, it distressed him, so Allah Most High sent down Qur’an by which he might console himself: ‘And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis refused.’ Then He revealed to him: O Muhammad, I commanded and was not obeyed; so do not grieve when you command and are not obeyed regarding your legatee.”

And the story of Adam (peace be upon him), the narrations concerning it have already preceded in Surah al‑Baqarah and al‑A‘raf [1].

[Quran 20:121-122] M. H. Shakir: So they both ate of it, so their evil inclinations became manifest to them, and they both began to cover themselves with leaves of the garden; and Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him). Then his Lord chose him, so He turned to him and guided (him).

99-/7062) Ibn Babawayh said: Ahmad ibn Ziyad ibn Ja‘far al‑Hamadani (may Allah be pleased with him), and al‑Husayn ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Hisham the scribe, and Ali ibn ‘Abdullah al‑Warraq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us. They said: Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim narrated to us; he said: al‑Qasim ibn Muhammad al‑Barmaki narrated to us; he said: Abu’s‑Salt al‑Harawi narrated to us; he said: When al‑Ma’mun gathered, for Ali ibn Musa al‑Ridha (peace be upon them), the partisans of doctrines from the people of Islam and from [other] religions—the Jews, the Christians, the Magians, the Sabeans, and the rest of the people of doctrines—no one stood up except that he had been bound by his proof, as if a stone had been forced into his mouth. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al‑Jahm stood up to him and said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, do you affirm the infallibility of the prophets? He said: “Yes.” He said: Then what do you say about the saying of Allah Most High: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him)’? al‑Ridha (peace be upon him) said: “Woe to you, O Ali! Be conscious of Allah, and do not attribute obscenities to the prophets of Allah, and do not interpret the Book of Allah by your [own] opinion, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: ‘And none knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge’ [1]. As for His saying, Mighty and Majestic, regarding Adam: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him),’ indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created Adam (peace be upon him) as a Proof on His earth and a Caliph in His lands; He did not create him for the Garden. And the act of disobedience from Adam (peace be upon him) was in the Garden, not on the earth [and his infallibility was required to be on the earth], so that the measures of the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, might be fulfilled [2]. So when he was sent down to the earth and He made him a Proof and a Caliph, He rendered him infallible by His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Surely Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the descendants of Ibrahim and the descendants of ‘Imran above the nations’ [3].” The hadith is longer.

99-/7063) And from him, he said: Tamim ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Tamim al‑Qurashi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to me, from Hamdan ibn Sulayman al‑Naysaburi, from Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al‑Jahm, who said: I attended the assembly of al‑Ma’mun, and with him was al‑Ridha, Ali ibn Musa (peace be upon them). Al‑Ma’mun said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it not your doctrine that the prophets are infallible? He said: “Indeed.” He said: Then what do you say about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him)’? He (peace be upon him) said: “Surely Allah, Exalted, said to Adam (peace be upon him): ‘O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the garden and eat from it a plenteous (food) wherever you wish, and do not approach this tree’ [4]—and He pointed out to them the wheat tree—‘lest you be of the unjust’ [5]. He did not say to them: ‘Do not eat from this tree nor from that which is of its kind.’ So they did not approach that tree and did not eat from it; rather, they ate from other than it when Satan whispered to them and said, ‘Your Lord has not forbidden you from this tree’ [6]—He has only forbidden you from approaching another [tree], and He has not forbidden you from eating of it—‘except that you should be two angels or that you should be of the immortals; and he swore to them both: Most surely I am a sincere adviser to you’ [7]. Adam and Hawwa had not seen before that one who swore by Allah while lying; so he led them on by delusion [8]. They ate from it, trusting his oath by Allah. And that was from Adam (peace be upon him) before prophethood, and it was not a major sin by which he would deserve to enter the Fire; rather, it was among the minor forgiven slips that may occur to prophets before the descent of revelation upon them. Then, when Allah Most High chose him and made him a prophet, he was infallible: he would not commit a minor or a major [sin]. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him); then his Lord chose him, so He turned to him and guided (him).’ And He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Surely Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the descendants of Ibrahim and the descendants of ‘Imran above the nations’ [9].’”

[Quran 20:123-127] M. H. Shakir: He said: Get forth you two therefrom, all (of you), one of you an enemy to another. Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, he shall not go astray nor be unhappy; And whoever turns away from My reminder, his shall be a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection, blind. He shall say: My Lord! why hast Thou raised me blind and I was a seeing one indeed? He will say: Even so: Our communications came to you, but you neglected them; even thus shall you be forsaken. And thus do We recompense him who is extravagant and does not believe in the communications of his Lord; and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is severer and more lasting.

99-/7064) Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub—from al‑Husayn ibn Muhammad—from al‑Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad—from al‑Sayyari—from Ali ibn ‘Abdullah—said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Then whoever follows My guidance, he shall not go astray nor be unhappy.’ He said: “Whoever professes belief in the Imams, follows their command, and does not transgress their obedience.”

99-/7065) And from him: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Salamah ibn al‑Khattab, from al‑Husayn ibn ‘Abd al‑Rahman, from Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And whoever turns away from My reminder, his shall be a straitened life,’ he said: “It means the guardianship (wilayah) of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).” I said: And ‘We will raise him on the day of resurrection, blind’? He said: “It means blind of sight in the Resurrection, blind of heart in the world to the guardianship of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).” He said: “And he is bewildered on the Day of Resurrection, saying: ‘My Lord! why hast Thou raised me blind and I was a seeing one indeed?’ He will say: ‘Even so: Our communications came to you’—he said: the communications are the Imams (peace be upon them)—‘but you neglected them’; that is, you abandoned them; ‘and even thus shall you be forsaken today’—that is, you will be left in the Fire as you abandoned the Imams (peace be upon them), for you did not obey their command nor listen to their saying.” I said: And [what of] ‘And thus do We recompense him who is extravagant and does not believe in the communications of his Lord, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is severer and more lasting’? He said: “It means whoever associates with the guardianship of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) another [guardian], and does not believe in the communications of his Lord, and abandons the Imams out of hostility—so he does not follow their traces nor befriend them.”
