Qur’an 2:159 — M. H. Shakir: Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance that We revealed after We made it clear for men in the Book, these it is whom Allah shall curse, and those who curse shall curse them (too).

99-/737 _1- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from someone he mentioned, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): “Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance—[it is] regarding ‘Alī (peace be upon him).”

99-/738 _2- From Humrān, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance after We made it clear for men in the Book: “By that He means us—and Allah’s help is sought.”

99-/739 _3- From Zayd al-Shaḥḥām: He said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) was asked about the punishment of the grave. He said: “Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) related to us that a man came to Salmān al-Fārisī and said, ‘Tell me [something].’ He remained silent about him; then [the man] returned and he [Salmān] remained silent. The man turned away while reciting this verse: Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance after We made it clear for men in the Book. [Salmān] said to him, ‘Come back. If we found someone trustworthy, we would indeed tell him; but prepare [1] for Munkar and Nakīr when they come to you in the grave and ask you about the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family). If you doubt or evade [2], they will strike your head with a hammer they have, and you will become ashes from it.’ I said, ‘Then what?’ He said, ‘He returns, then he is punished.’ I said, ‘Who are Munkar and Nakīr?’ He said, ‘They are the two [angels] stationed in the grave.’ I said, ‘Are they two angels who punish people in their graves?’ He said, ‘Yes.’”

99-/740 _4- From some of our companions, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him, “Inform me about Allah’s saying: Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance after We made it clear for men in the Book.” He said: “It is us that He means by it—and Allah’s help is sought. Indeed, when the matter comes to a man from us, he has no choice—or it does not befit him—except to make clear to the people who will be after him.”

99-/741 _5- And Muḥammad b. Muslim narrated it: He said, “They are the People of the Book.”

99-/742 _6- From ‘Abdullāh b. Bukayr, from one who related to him, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: These it is whom Allah shall curse, and those who curse shall curse them (too). He said: “We are they [3]. And they have said, ‘[Even] the vermin of the earth [curse them].’”

Qur’an 2:163-164 — M. H. Shakir:

And your God is one God! there is no god but He; He is the Beneficent, the Merciful. (163)

Surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships that run in the sea with that which profits men, and the water that Allah sends down from the cloud, then gives life with it to the earth after its death and spreads in it all (kinds of) animals, and in the changing of the winds and the clouds made subservient between the heaven and the earth, there are signs for a people who understand. (164)

Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “Surely Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has perfected the proofs for people through intellects, supported the prophets with clear evidences [4], and guided them to His Lordship by means of the proofs. So He said: And your God is One God; there is no god but He, the Beneficent, the Merciful; Surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships that run in the sea with that which profits men, and what Allah sends down from the sky of water, giving life thereby to the earth after its death, and spreading in it every creature, and in the changing of the winds, and the clouds made subservient between the heaven and the earth—there are signs for a people who understand.”
