99-/1799 Translation: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from several of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from ‘Ali b. al-Hakam, from Sayf b. ‘Umayrah, from Abu Zurara al-Tamimi, from Abu Hassan, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wanted to create the earth, He commanded the winds and they struck the surface of the water until it became waves; then it frothed and became a single foam, and He gathered it at the location of the House. Then He made it a mountain of foam, and then spread out the earth from beneath it. This is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka, blessed. He likewise narrated from Sayf b. ‘Umayrah, from Abu Bakr al-Hadrami, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), the like of it.

99-/1800 Translation: From him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Husayn b. Mahbub, from Ibn Sinan, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka, blessed and a guidance for the nations; in it are clear signs. What are these clear signs? He said: The Station of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), where he stood upon the stone and his feet left their imprint in it; and the Black Stone; and the dwelling-place of Isma‘il.
99-/1801 Translation: And from him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Mu‘awiyah b. ‘Ammar, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): I stand to pray in Mecca while a woman is in front of me sitting or passing by—what then? He said: There is no problem; it was only named Bakka because men and women jostle (are pressed together) there.

99-/1802 Translation: And from him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah b. Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: and whoever enters it shall be secure—does He mean the House or the Sanctuary? He said: Whoever among the people enters the Sanctuary seeking refuge in it is safe from the wrath of Allah; and whoever among the wild animals and birds enters it is safe

99-/1803 Translation: And from him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hammad, from al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: If a person commits an offense outside the Sanctuary and then flees to the Sanctuary, it is not proper for anyone to seize him in the Sanctuary; rather, he is prevented from the market, and not bought from, and not given food or drink, and not spoken to. When that is done to him, he will soon go out and be apprehended. But if he commits an offense in the Sanctuary, the prescribed punishment is carried out on him within the Sanctuary, because he showed no reverence for the Sanctuary.

Abi Hamzah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: If a thief steals outside Mecca, or commits a crime against himself and then flees to Mecca, he is not seized so long as he is in the Sanctuary until he leaves it. But he is prevented from the market, not bought from, and not sat with, until he leaves and is then seized. If he committed that offense within the Sanctuary, he is seized within it.

He said: You have asked me about something that no one has asked me about—save whom Allah wills. He said: Whoever intends this House knowing that it is the House which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded, and who knows us, the People of the House, with due knowledge, is secure in this world and the Hereafter.

99-/1807 Translation: And from him: with his chain from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding His, Mighty and Majestic, saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure.
99-/1814 Translation: Al-‘Ayyashi: from ‘Abd al-Samad b. Sa‘d, who said: Abu Ja‘far sought to purchase from the people of Mecca their houses to expand the Mosque, but they refused; he enticed them yet they held back; this distressed him, so he came to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) and said to him: I have asked these people for something from their homes and courtyards so that we may add to the Mosque, and they have prevented me, and it has deeply grieved me. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Why does that grieve you, when your proof against them in this is manifest? He said: With what should I argue against them? He said: With the Book of Allah. He said: In what place? He said: The saying of Allah: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka. Allah, Exalted, has informed you that the first house appointed for the people is the one at Bekka. If they settled before the House, then the courtyards belong to them; but if the House is ancient before them, then its courtyard belongs to it. So Abu Ja‘far summoned them and argued this with them, and they said to him: Do what you wish.
99-/1815 Translation: From al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. al-Nu‘man, who said: When al-Mahdi built within the Sacred Mosque, there remained a house within the squaring of the Mosque. He requested it from its owners but they refused. He asked the jurists about that, and each said to him: It is not appropriate to include anything in the Sacred Mosque by force. ‘Ali b. Yaqtin said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, if you were to write to Musa b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them), he would inform you of the proper course. So he wrote to the governor of Madinah to ask Musa b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them) regarding a house we desire to include in the Sacred Mosque, but its owner has refused; what is the way out? He relayed that to Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him), and Abu al-Hasan said: Must there be an answer in this matter? He said to him: The matter requires it. He said to him: Write: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. If it is the Ka‘bah that has encroached upon the people, then the people have more right to its courtyard; but if it is the people who have encroached upon the courtyard of the Ka‘bah, then the Ka‘bah has more right to its courtyard. When the letter reached al-Mahdi, he took it, kissed it, and then ordered the house demolished. The people of the house came to Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) and asked him to write to al-Mahdi regarding the price of their house, so he wrote to him: Give them something. So he satisfied them.
99-/1816 Translation: From Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, was as He described Himself, and His Throne was upon the water, and the water upon the air, and the air does not flow; there was no creation other than water, and the water on that day was fresh and sweet. When Allah wanted to create the earth, He commanded the four winds and they struck the water until it became waves; then it frothed a single froth, and He gathered it at the location of the House; Allah commanded, and it became a mountain of foam; then He spread out the earth from beneath it; then He said: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka, blessed and a guidance for the nations.
99-/1817 Translation: From Zurārah, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) was asked about the House: Was pilgrimage performed to it before the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) was sent? He said: Yes. Do they not know that people used to perform the Hajj? We inform you that Adam, and Noah, and Solomon (peace be upon them) performed the Hajj to the House with the jinn, humankind, and birds; and Musa (peace be upon him) indeed performed Hajj to it on a red camel saying, “Here I am! Here I am!”—for it is as Allah, Exalted, said: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka, blessed and a guidance for the nations.
99-/1818 Translation: From ‘Abdullah b. Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: Mecca is the entirety of the town, and Bakka is the site of the Stone where people push one another.
99-/1819 Translation: From Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Indeed, Bakka is the location of the House, and Mecca is the Sanctuary; and that is His saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure.
99-/1820 Translation: From al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him: Why was Mecca named Bakka? He said: Because people push one another in it with their hands.
99-/1821 Translation: From Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Bakka is the location of the House, and Mecca is all that the Sanctuary encompasses.
99-/1822 Translation: From al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: It was found written on a stone among the stones of the House: Indeed I am Allah, the Lord of Bakka; I created it on the day I created the heavens and the earth, and on the day I created the sun and the moon; and I created the two mountains and encircled them with seven angels, an encircling. And on another stone: This is the Sacred House of Allah at Bakka; Allah has guaranteed the sustenance of its people by three ways; blessed for them are meat and water; the first who granted it (bequeathed it) was Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
99-/1823 Translation: From ‘Ali b. Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his brother Musa (peace be upon them), who said: I asked him about Mecca—why was it named Bakka? He said: Because people push one another in it with their hands—meaning they shove one another with their hands in the Mosque around the Ka‘bah.
99-/1824 Translation: From Ibn Sinan, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah: In it are clear signs—so what are these clear signs? He said: The Station of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), when he stood upon it and his feet left their imprint in it; the Stone; and the dwelling-place of Isma‘il (peace be upon him).

99-/1825 Translation: From Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) who said: I asked him about His saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: Every fearful one finds safety in it so long as there is not upon him a prescribed penalty from the limits of Allah that must be enforced. I said: Does one who wages war against Allah and His Messenger and strives in the land with corruption find safety in it? He said: He is like one who lies in wait on a road and takes a sheep or a thing—then the Imam does with him as he wills. He said: And I asked him about a bird that enters the Sanctuary. He said: It is not taken nor touched, because Allah says: and whoever enters it shall be secure.

99-/1826 Translation: From ‘Abdullah b. Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). I said: What is your view of His saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure—does He mean the House or the Sanctuary? He said: Whoever among the people enters the Sanctuary seeking refuge in it is safe; and whoever among the believers enters the House seeking refuge in it is safe from the wrath of Allah; and whoever among the wild beasts, predators, and birds enters the Sanctuary is safe from being attacked or harmed until he leaves the Sanctuary.
99-/1827 Translation: From Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: Whoever enters Mecca, the Sacred Mosque, recognizing of our right and sanctity what he recognizes of its right and sanctity, Allah forgives his sin and suffices him concerning what preoccupies him of the affairs of this world and the next; and that is His saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure.
99-/1828 Translation: From al-Muthanna, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). I asked him about the saying of Allah: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: If a thief commits [his act] outside the Sanctuary and then enters the Sanctuary, it is not proper for anyone to seize him; rather, he is prevented from the market, not bought from, and not spoken to. When that is done to him he is likely to go out and be seized; and when he is seized the prescribed penalty is carried out on him. But if he commits [the offense] in the Sanctuary, he is seized and the penalty is carried out on him in the Sanctuary—because whoever commits a crime in the Sanctuary, the penalty is carried out on him in the Sanctuary.
99-/1829 Translation: And ‘Abdullah b. Sinan said: I heard him (peace be upon him) say regarding whatever is brought into the Sanctuary of what was hunted in the non-Sanctuary: When it enters the Sanctuary it is not to be slaughtered; indeed Allah says: and whoever enters it shall be secure.

99-/1830 Translation: From ‘Imran al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: If a person commits [an offense] outside the Sanctuary and then flees to the Sanctuary, he is not to be seized; rather, he is denied access to the market, not bought from, not fed, not given drink, and not spoken to; when that is done to him, he will soon go out and be seized. But if his offense is in the Sanctuary, he is seized within the Sanctuary.
99-/1831 Translation: From ‘Abd al-Khaliq al-Sayqal, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah: and whoever enters it shall be secure. He said: You have asked me about something that none has asked me about—save whom Allah wills. Then he said: Indeed, whoever intends this House knowing that it is the House that Allah commanded, and knows us, the People of the House, with due knowledge, is secure in this world and the Hereafter.
99-/1832 Translation: From ‘Ali b. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom—Allah’s saying: clear signs—the Station of Ibrahim—and whoever enters it shall be secure; yet the Murji’ī, the Qadarī, the Harūrī, and the heretic who does not believe in Allah may enter it? He said: No—and with no honor [for them]. I said: Then who [is meant], may I be your ransom? He said: Whoever enters it while recognizing our right as he recognizes its right, he exits from his sins and is relieved of the concerns of this world and the Hereafter.
99-/1833 Translation: Al-Mufid in al-Ikhtisas: from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), who was asked about the first corner (sanctuary) that Allah placed on earth. He said: The corner that is in Mecca; and that is His saying: Surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka, blessed. He said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad.
99-/1834 Translation: Ibn Shahrāshūb: from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, Exalted: Surely the first house appointed for men. A man said to him: Is it the first house? He said: No, there were houses before it; but it is the first house placed for the people, blessed—containing guidance, mercy, and blessing. The first to build it was Ibrahim (peace be upon him), then a people of the Arabs from Jurhum built it, then it was demolished and the ‘Amaliqah built it, then it was demolished and Quraysh built it.
Quran 3:97 (M. H. Shakir): And it is a duty of men towards Allah to make pilgrimage to the House—whoever is able to find a way to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient above any need of the worlds.
99-/1835 Translation: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from several of our companions, from Sahl b. Ziyad, from Musa b. al-Qasim al-Bajali; and from Muhammad b. Yahya, from al-‘Amraki b. ‘Ali—both of them—from ‘Ali b. Ja‘far, from his brother Musa (peace be upon him), who said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has obligated Hajj upon those of means every year; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: And it is a duty of men towards Allah to make pilgrimage to the House—whoever is able to find a way to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient above any need of the worlds. He said: I asked: So whoever among us does not perform Hajj has disbelieved? He said: No; but whoever says, “It is not as such,” has disbelieved.
99-/1836 Translation: From him: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Umar b. Udhaynah, who said: I wrote to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) questions… and the reply came: You asked about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And it is a duty of men towards Allah to make pilgrimage to the House—whoever is able to find a way to it. He means by it Hajj and ‘Umrah together, for both are obligatory.
99-/1837 Translation: …from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hammad b. ‘Uthman, from al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): What is the “way” (sabil)? He said: That he has what he can perform Hajj with… and even if he performs Hajj on a donkey with clipped ears and a cut tail… If he can manage to walk part of the way and ride part of the way, then let him perform Hajj.
99-/1838 Translation: …from Muhammad b. Yahya al-Khath‘ami… Hafs al-Kunnasi asked… He said: Whoever is sound in body, free in passage, and has provisions and a mount… then he is among those who are able for Hajj.
99-/1839 Translation: …from Abu al-Rabi‘ al-Shami… It was said: [Sabil is] provisions and mount. He said: Abu Ja‘far was asked about this and said: Then the people would be ruined—if one who has provisions and a mount enough to sustain his dependents and avoid need must [be forced to give it up]… So what is the “way”? He said: Financial ease—when he can perform Hajj with some of it while leaving some to support his dependents. Has not Allah obligated zakat, and He only made it upon one who owns two hundred dirhams?
99-/1840 Translation: …from al-Sakuni… A man from the Qadarites asked him… He said: He only means by “ability” provisions and mount—not bodily ability. The man said: So if he has provisions and a mount, is he not thereby able for Hajj? He said: Not as you suppose. You may see a man who has much wealth—more than provisions and a mount—yet he does not perform Hajj until Allah Most High permits that for him.
99-/1841 Translation: The Shaykh in al-Tahdhib… from Mu‘awiyah b. ‘Ammar…: This [ayah] is for one who has wealth and health; if he postpones it for trade, it is not permissible for him; if he dies upon that, he has abandoned a law of Islam, as he finds what he can perform Hajj with. And if some people invite him to carry him [to Hajj], but he is shy and does not do so, it is not permissible for him except to set out—even if upon a donkey with clipped ears and a cut tail. … Regarding “and whoever disbelieves,” he said: It means: whoever abandons [it].
99-/1842 Translation: …from Muhammad b. Muslim… He said: That he has what he can perform Hajj with… He is among those who are able—why be shy?! Even if upon a donkey with clipped ears and a cut tail… If he can walk part and ride part, let him do so.
99-/1843 Translation: …from Abu Basir…: He walks if he does not have [means]. … He walks and rides [alternately]… He serves the group and goes out with them. The Shaykh said: This report is to be understood as recommending [these options], not obligating them.
99-/1844 Translation: Al-‘Ayyashi… from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): This is for one who has wealth and health; if he postpones it for trade, it is not permissible; and if he dies upon that, he has abandoned a law of Islam—if he leaves Hajj while finding the means. And if someone invites him to carry him, but he is shy and does not do it, it is not permissible for him except to set out—even upon a donkey with clipped ears and a cut tail. And it is Allah’s saying: and whoever disbelieves—whoever leaves [it] has disbelieved; and why would he not disbelieve, when he has left a law of Islam? He then says: The pilgrimage is (performed in) the well-known months… [Quran 2:197]; the act that makes it obligatory is: the talbiyah, the ritual marking, and the garlanding—whichever of these he does, he has entered into the obligation of Hajj; and there is no entering into obligation except in these months which Allah has said: The pilgrimage is (performed in) the well-known months.
99-/1845 Translation: From Zurārah…: Islam is built upon five: prayer, alms, fasting, Hajj, and loyalty (wilayah)… He mentioned the superiority of wilayah, then prayer, then zakat, then Hajj—citing His saying: And it is a duty of men towards Allah to make pilgrimage to the House… and the Prophet’s saying: A single accepted Hajj is better than twenty supererogatory prayers… and then fasting.
99-/1846 Translation: From ‘Umar b. Udhaynah…: He means by it Hajj and ‘Umrah together, for both are obligatory.
99-/1847 Translation: From ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Sayābah…: Whoever is sound in body, free in passage, and has provisions and a mount—he is able for Hajj.
99-/1848 Translation: …in the hadith of al-Kinani…: And if he is able to walk part and ride part, let him do so. And regarding “and whoever disbelieves,” he said: [it means] whoever leaves [it].
99-/1849 Translation: From Abu al-Rabi‘ al-Shami… as in 1839, verbatim.
99-/1850 Translation: From Abu Basir…: A man is offered [support for] Hajj and is shy to accept—does he [count as] able? He said: Yes—tell him not to be shy, even if upon a donkey with a cut tail… and if he can walk part and ride part, let him do so.
99-/1851 Translation: From Abu Usāmah Zayd al-Shahhām…: What is the “way”? He said: That he has what he can perform Hajj with… “And whoever disbelieves?” He said: It is ingratitude for blessings; and he also said: [it means] whoever leaves [it].
99-/1852 Translation: From Abu Basir…: “Whoever is able to find a way to it?” He said: You go forth; and if you do not have [means], you walk… Walk and ride at times… Serve a group and go out with them.
99-/1853 Translation: From ‘Abd al-Rahman b. al-Hajjaj…: Health in his body and capability in his wealth. … [In another wording:] strength in the body and affluence in wealth.
