16. The Care of Imam Husain (a.s.) for the Late Asadi Shirazi

The writer says: Every year during the Mihdawiyya ten days in Isfahan, at the Global Center of Hazrat Wali al-Asr (may our souls be sacrificed for him), I carry out my duties. On the 15th of Sha‘ban 1425 AH, I had the honor of meeting Ayatullah Haj Sayyid Mahdi Imami Sadooghi.

When the conversation turned to the miracles of Imam Husain (a.s.), Ayatullah Imami said:

“One day Agha Asadi Shirazi came here along with Haj Agha Mavaniyan. Agha Asadi said: ‘Since childhood I have been in love with the pilgrimage to Imam Husain (a.s.), but it never happened. Many opportunities arose to go to the shrine of Imam Reza (a.s.) in Mashhad, but I didn’t go, saying I must first go to Karbala.’

I had not yet finished high school when I fell in love with my cousin. I told my aunt, who told Hajji. Hajji said: ‘He must finish his studies, now is not the time for these things.’

One day a group was leaving for Mashhad. They insisted I join them, but I refused, saying: ‘I must first go to Karbala.’

The next day I regretted it. I told one of my friends: ‘Let’s go to Karbala.’ He agreed. We went to Abadan and visited Ayatullah Qa‘imi.

I had lived in Abadan for some time with my father, so Ayatullah Qa‘imi recognized me and said: ‘How surprising to see you here!’ I replied: ‘I am heading to Karbala.’

He thought for a moment, then sent us to someone who said the travel cost was 500 tomans per person. But my friend and I each had only 200 tomans.

I had an aunt in Abadan but did not know her address. We searched until we found her. She was very happy to see us. I said: ‘Dear Aunt, we need 1,000 tomans.’ She immediately gave it. I phoned my father to send a remittance.

That person took us to Karbala, and by the grace of the Master (Imam Husain), no problems occurred.

I presented to the Master: ‘I have achieved my only wish. Now I don’t care if I ever return to my homeland or not, or if my other problems are solved or not.’

After a while we went to visit all the holy shrines, and returned to Abadan with the same means. In Abadan I visited my aunt and found out that my father had sent the 1,000 tomans, which had reached her hands.

Then we departed and returned to Shiraz. When I reached home, I saw everything decorated, cauldrons placed on the fire. I asked my mother: ‘Did you know I would return tonight?’ She said: ‘No.’

I asked: ‘Then what is all this?’ She said: ‘Tonight is your wedding night.’ I said: ‘What do you mean?’ She explained:

‘A few days ago, Hajji saw your father and asked why he was not bringing the bride. Your father replied: “I am ready — when?” Hajji said: “This very week.” Out of fear you might change your mind, we invited all the family, brought the bride yesterday, and didn’t tell anyone that you were traveling.’

During this time no one asked about me, the men thought I was with the women, and the women thought I was with the men.

Last night the food distribution was completed, and tonight is your wedding night. We quickly called two of the scholars and had the marriage contract recited privately.”

Agha Asadi said:

“I had never mentioned anything about this matter before Imam Husain (a.s.), it was only in my heart and had never crossed my lips.”

When I reached about 40–45 years of age, I fell ill with a digestive disease that constantly produced blood and pus. I went to the doctor, who gave me medicine. For six months I was under medical care, and could only manage to work two hours a day in my shop, spending the rest of the time between my room and the bathroom.

One day I told the doctor: ‘Sir, I have been under your care for six months with no improvement.’ The doctor got angry and said: ‘You have stomach cancer, these medicines are only palliative.’

I became extremely worried, picked up a small bag, and told my family: ‘I have urgent business in Tehran.’ They said: ‘You cannot travel in this condition.’ I said: ‘There is no choice, I must go.’

I went straight to Abadan, to the same person, and he accompanied me to Karbala, where — by God’s grace — nothing went wrong.

I stayed in Karbala for seventeen days. Every day I would purify myself three times and go to the shrine and say: ‘O Master, death is a right, but I am not ready yet.’

On the seventeenth day my condition returned to completely normal. On the eighteenth day I visited the other shrines, returned to Shiraz, and there has been no trace of that illness ever since.
