Being Deprived of Water by Imam Husain (a.s.)’s Enemies
Being Deprived of Water by Imam Husain (a.s.)’s Enemies
One reason is that they prevented him from four rights that he possessed regarding water.
First: They deprived him of the common right that he shared with all people, for all the children of Adam are partners in water and pasture. [391]
For this reason it is permissible to drink water from privately owned rivers even without obtaining the owner's permission.
Perhaps it is also for this reason that giving water to thirsty disbelievers is recommended, as has been narrated in a tradition. [392]
Second: They deprived him of the common right that he shared with all living creatures, because every living being has a right to water.
For this reason, Tayamum (dry ablution) becomes obligatory whenever there is fear that using water may result in thirst for animals, whether owned or unowned.
Third: They deprived him of the special right that he had over the people of Kufah, for he had quenched their thirst on three occasions.
Once, during a year of drought, he prayed for rain on their behalf, and through his blessing rain descended. [393]
A second time, at Siffin, he secured access to water from the army of Mu'awiya by the sword. [394]
And a third time, at Qadisiyyah, he gave water to the army of al-Hurr. [395]
Fourth: They deprived him of the special right that he had over the Euphrates itself, because it was part of the dowry (Mehr) of his mother, Lady Fatimah (a.s.). [396]
Yet those people observed none of these rights.
Even when he requested a single drop for his nursing infant, and they saw that child burning with thirst, they still did not respond.
Then he asked for a single drop for himself, and they did not give it.
Alas!
They were all fully watered—beasts and wild animals alike— While the Solomon of Karbala sucked upon his ring because of the scarcity of water.
