128. The Elixir of Healing

Muḥammad ibn Muslim narrates from Imām Bāqir and Imām Ṣādiq (‘alayhim al-salām) that they said:

God, the Bestower, in compensation for the martyrdom of Imām Husain (a.s.), has:

1.         Placed Imamate in his progeny,

2.         Placed healing in his soil (turba),

3.         Placed the acceptance of supplications beneath his dome,

4.         And the days of arrival and departure of his visitors are not counted as part of their lifespan.¹

There are many narrations from Imām Ṣādiq (a.s.) regarding the soil of Imām Husain (a.s.), such as:

1.         The turba of Imām Husain (a.s.) is the cure for every illness and is the greatest elixir.²

2.         The turba is allowed to be taken from within seventy cubits of the surroundings of his grave.³

3.         Any believing patient who recognizes the rank of Imām Husain (a.s.) and observes his sanctity, if given as much as a needle tip of the turba, will recover.⁴

4.         Touching the gums of one’s children with turba leads to faith.⁵

5.         Prostration upon the turba of Imām Husain (a.s.) tears through the seven veils.⁶

When Imām Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn (a.s.) finished burying Imām Husain (a.s.), he took a handful of soil from his grave and made a sajdah tablet (muhr) and tasbīḥ from it, which he carried with him into Yazīd’s palace.¹

Imām Mūsā ibn Jaʿfar (a.s.), with the miraculous power of Imamate, came to Nīshāpūr to attend the funeral of Lady Shaṭīṭa, and he sprinkled the soil from the grave of Imām Husain (a.s.) over her body.²

According to narrations, placing the turba in the grave of a believer is a means of security in faith.³

In a ḥadīth, when the heavenly maidens (ḥūrīs) see an angel descending to earth for a mission, they request them to bring some of the soil of Imām Husain’s grave as a gift.⁴

Imām Ṣādiq (a.s.) never prostrated on anything except the turba of Imām Husain (a.s.).⁵
