M. H. Shakir: Our Lord! forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affair, and make firm our feet and help us against the unbelieving people.

99-/1948 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His saying, “And their saying was no other than that they said: Our Lord! forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affair,” means their sins.

M. H. Shakir: O you who believe! if you obey those who disbelieve, they will make you turn back on your heels, so you will turn back losers. • Nay! Allah is your Patron and He is the best of the helpers. • We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority; and their abode is the fire, and evil is the abode of the unjust. • And certainly Allah made good to you His promise when you slew them by His permission, until when you became weak-hearted and disputed about the affair and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you loved; of you were some who desired this world and of you were some who desired the hereafter; then He turned you away from them that He might try you; and He has certainly pardoned you, and Allah is Gracious to the believers. • When you ran off precipitately and did not wait for any one, and the Messenger was calling you from your rear, so He gave you another sorrow in place of the sorrow, so that you might not grieve at what had escaped you, nor (at) what befell you; and Allah is aware of what you do. • Then after sorrow He sent down security upon you, a drowsiness coming upon a party of you, and (there was) another party whom anxiety had overtaken, they entertained about Allah thoughts of ignorance unbecomingly. They said: Have we any hand in the affair? Say: Surely the affair is wholly (in the hands) of Allah. They hide within their hearts what they would not reveal to you. They say: Had we any hand in the affair, we would not have been slain here. Say: Had you remained in your houses, those for whom slaughter was ordained would certainly have gone forth to the places where they would be slain, and that Allah might test what was in your breasts and that He might purge what was in your hearts; and Allah knows what is in the breasts.

99-/1949 _2- Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying: O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, said: it means ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy, who went out with the Messenger of Allah, then turned back, cowardly discouraging his companions.

99-/1950 _3- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi: Regarding His saying, “Nay! Allah is your Patron and He is the best of the helpers,” it is said: it was revealed about the hypocrites when they told the believers on the day of Uhud, the day of defeat: Return to your brothers, and return to their religion—reported from ‘Ali (peace be upon him).

99-/1951 _4- Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His saying, “We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve,” means Quraysh, because of their associating partners with Allah.

And His saying: “And certainly Allah made good to you His promise ... and Allah is aware of what you do.” [See full text above in 3:152-154.]

99-/1952 _4- And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “So He gave you another sorrow in place of the sorrow”—the first sorrow was the rout and the killing, and the second was Khalid ibn al-Walid looming over them—“that you might not grieve at what escaped you of booty nor at what befell you,” meaning the killing of their brothers, “and Allah is aware of what you do. Then after sorrow He sent down security,” meaning after the rout.

99-/1953 _5- And Ali ibn Ibrahim said: The wounded and others of the companions of the Messenger of Allah returned and came excusing themselves to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family). Allah wished to make His Messenger know who among them was truthful and who was lying, so He sent sleep upon them in that state until they were falling to the ground. The hypocrites who were lying did not settle; their wits fled, and they were speaking incoherently. So Allah revealed: “A party of you were covered with drowsiness,” meaning the believers, “and a party whose own souls had rendered them anxious; they entertained about Allah thoughts of ignorance. They say: Have we any hand in the affair? Say: Surely the affair is wholly Allah’s. They hide within their hearts what they would not reveal to you. They say: Had we any hand in the affair, we would not have been slain here.” They were saying: If we had been in our houses, killing would not have reached us. Allah said: “Had you been in your houses, those for whom killing was prescribed would certainly have gone forth to the places where they would be slain, and that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purge what is in your hearts; and Allah knows what is in the breasts.” Thus Allah informed His Messenger of what was in the people’s hearts, who among them was a believer and who among them was a lying hypocrite, by means of the drowsiness that distinguished between them. Then He revealed to him: “Allah is not going to leave the believers in the state in which you are until He separates the evil from the good” [1]—meaning the lying hypocrite from the truthful believer—by the drowsiness which distinguished them.

99-/1954 _6- Al-‘Ayyashi: From al-Husayn ibn Abi al-‘Ala’, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), mentioning the Day of Uhud: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) had his incisor broken, and the people turned, ascending up the valley, while the Messenger was calling them from their rear; so He requited them with sorrow upon sorrow, then He sent down drowsiness upon them.” I said: What is drowsiness? He said: “Anxiety. When they woke up they said: We have disbelieved. Abu Sufyan came and mounted the mountain with his god Hubal, and said: Exalt Hubal! The Messenger of Allah that day said: Allah is higher and more majestic. The incisor of the Messenger of Allah was broken and his gum hurt [2]. He said: I implore You, my Lord, by what You promised me, for if You will, You will not be worshiped. The Messenger of Allah said: O ‘Ali, where were you? He said: O Messenger of Allah, I clung [3] to the ground. He said: That is what I expected of you. Then he said: O ‘Ali, bring me water to wash myself. He brought it in a large dish [1], but the Messenger of Allah disliked it, and said: Bring it in your hand. He brought him water in his palm, and the Messenger of Allah washed his beard.”

M. H. Shakir: Surely those of you who turned back on the day when the two armies met, only the Shaitan made them slip on account of some of what they have earned, and certainly Allah has pardoned them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing. • O you who believe! be not like those who disbelieved and said of their brethren when they traveled in the earth or engaged in fighting: Had they been with us, they would not have died and they would not have been slain; so that Allah may make it to be an intense regret in their hearts; and Allah gives life and causes death, and Allah sees what you do.

99-/1956 _2- From Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the people fled from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) on the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah called out: Indeed Allah has promised me that He will make me prevail over the entire religion. Some of the hypocrites—he named the two—said to him: We have been defeated, and you mock us?”

99-/1957 _3- From ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Kathir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Only the Shaitan made them slip on account of some of what they have earned.” He said: “They are the people of al-‘Aqabah (the treacherous pass).”

99-/1958 _4- And Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “Surely those of you who turned back the day the two armies met, only the Shaitan made them slip”: that is, he deceived them until they pursued the booty—“on account of some of what they have earned,” meaning by their sins—“and certainly Allah has pardoned them.” Then He said: “O you who believe! Be not like those who disbelieved,” meaning ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his companions who stayed back from the battle, “and they said of their brethren when they traveled in the land or were engaged in fighting: Had they been with us, they would not have died and would not have been slain, so that Allah may make it an intense regret in their hearts; and Allah gives life and causes death, and Allah sees what you do.”

M. H. Shakir: And if you are slain in the way of Allah or you die, certainly forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than what they amass.
