Ibrahim Ayah 12

Ibrahim, verse 12

If a blessing is bestowed upon him and he recognizes it in his heart—and in another narration: so he acknowledges it in his heart—and he praises Allah for it with his tongue, his words will not be exhausted before Allah commands increase for him—and in the narration of Abu Ishaq al-Mada’ini: before Allah permits increase for him—and that is His saying: “If you are grateful, I will most certainly give you more.” [Ibrahim 14:7]

Qur’anic verse [Ibrahim 14:7]:

M. H. Shakir: And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I will most certainly give you more; and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.

99-/5691 _14-

99-/5691 _14- And from Abu Walad, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): What about this manifest blessing upon us from Allah—if we thank Him for it and praise Him, will He not increase us, as Allah has said in His Book: “If you are grateful, I will most certainly give you more”? He said: Yes. Whoever praises Allah for His blessings and thanks Him, and knows that this is from Him and not from other than Him, Allah increases His blessings upon him.

Qur’anic verse [Ibrahim 14:9]:

M. H. Shakir: Has there not come to you the news of those before you, of the people of Nuh and Ad and Samood and those after them? None knows them but Allah. Their messengers came to them with clear arguments, but they put their hands into their mouths and said: Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt as to that to which you invite us.

99-/5692 _15-

99-/5692 _15- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “Has there not come to you the news of those before you, the people of Nuh…,” up to His saying: “but they put their hands into their mouths”: meaning into the mouths of the prophets; “and they said: Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in doubt as to that to which you invite us.”

Qur’anic verse [Ibrahim 14:12]:

M. H. Shakir: And what reason have we that we should not rely on Allah? And He has indeed guided us in our ways; and we would certainly bear with patience your persecution of us; and on Allah should the reliant rely.

99-/5693 _16-

99-/5693 _16- Al-‘Ayyashi: Al-Hasan ibn Zharif, from Muhammad, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And on Allah should the reliant rely,” said: “The planters (farmers).”

99-/5694 _17-

99-/5694 _17- Ibn Babawayh in (al-Faqih), mursal, from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And on Allah should the reliant rely,” said: “The planters (farmers).”

Qur’anic verses [Ibrahim 14:13-14]:

M. H. Shakir: And those who disbelieved said to their messengers: We will most certainly drive you forth from our land, or you shall return to our religion. So their Lord revealed to them: Most certainly We will destroy the unjust. And most certainly We will make you dwell in the land after them; this is for him who fears My majesty and fears My threat.

99-/5695 _1-

99-/5695 _1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, raising it to the Prophet (blessings of Allah upon him and his family), who said: “Whoever harms his neighbor out of greed for his dwelling, Allah will bequeath him his house. And it is His saying: ‘And those who disbelieved said to their messengers… So their Lord revealed to them: Most certainly We will destroy the unjust; and most certainly We will make you dwell in the land after them.’”

Qur’anic verse [Ibrahim 14:15]:

M. H. Shakir: And they asked for judgment and every arrogant opposer was disappointed.

99-/5696 _2-

99-/5696 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from a number of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Muhammad ibn Sulayman, from his father, from Abu Basir, from him (peace be upon him), who said: “While the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah upon him and his family) was sitting one day, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) approached. The Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) said to him: ‘There is in you a resemblance to ‘Isa son of Maryam. If it were not that factions of my community would say about you what the Christians said about ‘Isa son of Maryam, I would say a statement about you such that you would not pass by any group of people without them taking the dust from beneath your feet, seeking blessing by that.’”

He said: “The two Bedouins and al-Mughira ibn Shu‘ba, along with a number of Quraysh who were with them, became angry and said: ‘He is not satisfied except to strike a likeness for his cousin with ‘Isa son of Maryam!’ So Allah sent down upon His Prophet (blessings be upon him and his family): ‘And when a comparison is made with the son of Maryam, lo! your people raise a clamor thereat. And they say: Are our gods better, or is he? They set it forth to you only by way of contention; nay, they are a contentious people. He was naught but a servant on whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the children of Israel. And if We please, We could make among you—meaning among Banu Hashim—angels to be successors in the land.’ [al-Zukhruf 43:57–60]”

He said: “Al-Harith ibn ‘Amr al-Fihrī became angry and said: ‘O Allah, if this is indeed the truth from You—that Banu Hashim inherit one after another like Heraclius after Heraclius—then rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment.’ So Allah sent down regarding the statement of al-Harith, and this verse was revealed: ‘And Allah was not going to chastise them while you were among them, nor was Allah going to chastise them while they sought forgiveness.’ [al-Anfal 8:33]”
