O children of Israel! call to mind My favor which I bestowed on you and be faithful to your covenant with Me, I will fulfill My covenant with you; and of Me, Me alone, should you be afraid. (Qur’an 2:40, M. H. Shakir)

99-/435 The Imam Abu Muhammad al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you [1] when I sent Muhammad and settled him in your city; I did not burden you [2] with the toil of setting out and traveling to him. I made plain his signs and proofs of truth so that his state would not be confused for you. And fulfill My covenant which your prophets took upon your forefathers, and they were commanded [3] to deliver it to their descendants: that they shall surely believe [4] in Muhammad the Arab, the Qurashi, the Hashimi, made manifest by the signs and supported by the miracles—among them that a poisoned foreleg spoke to him, a wolf addressed him, the pulpit-trunk moaned for him, Allah multiplied a small amount of food for him, He softened for him the hardest of stones, and He made flowing waters solid for him; and there was no prophet that He supported with a proof except that He granted him one like it or better. And He made one of His greatest friends, ‘Ali son of Abi Talib (peace be upon him), his counterpart and companion—his intellect from his intellect, his knowledge from his knowledge, and his forbearance from his forbearance—supporting his religion with his keen sword, after he had cut off the pretexts of the stubborn by his overwhelming proof, his surpassing knowledge, and his complete virtue. I will fulfill your covenant by which I have obligated for you everlasting bliss in the abode of honor and the station of mercy. And Me—so fear Me—regarding opposition to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), for I am able to divert the afflictions of those who are your enemies when you agree with Me, and they are those who cannot divert My vengeance from you if you prefer to oppose Me.”

99-/436 Ibn Babawayh said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us, who said: al-Hasan b. ‘Ali al-Sukkari narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Zakariyya al-Jawhari narrated to us, who said: Ja‘far b. Muhammad b. ‘Umara narrated to us, from his father, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Ya‘qub and ‘Is were twins. ‘Is was born, then Ya‘qub was born; he was named Ya‘qub because he came out following (‘ala ‘aqib) his brother ‘Is. Ya‘qub is Israel, and the meaning of Israel is ‘servant of Allah,’ for ‘Isra’ means ‘servant,’ and ‘Il’ is Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

99-/437 And it is related in another report: “‘Isra’ means ‘power’ and ‘Il’ means ‘Allah,’ so the meaning of Israel is ‘the power of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.’”

99-/438 ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad b. Abi ‘Umayr, from Jamil, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). A man said to him: “May I be your ransom, Allah says: ‘Call on Me, I will answer you’ [1]—yet we call and we are not answered!” He said: “Because you do not fulfill Allah’s covenant. If you fulfilled it, Allah would fulfill it for you.” [Qur’an 40:60, M. H. Shakir: “Call on Me, I will answer you.”]

99-/439 Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Sama‘ah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: And fulfill My covenant—he said: “By the wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): I will fulfill your covenant—I will grant you the Garden.”

99-/440 Ibn Babawayh said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim narrated to us, from Muhammad b. ‘Ali al-Qurashi, who said: Abu al-Rabi‘ al-Zahrani narrated to us, who said: Hariz narrated to us, from Layth b. Abi Sulaym, from Mujahid, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “When Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: And fulfill My covenant, I will fulfill your covenant—by Allah, Adam departed this world having taken a covenant [from his people] to be faithful to his son, Sheeth, but it was not fulfilled for him. And Noah departed this world and took a covenant from his people to be faithful to his son [2] Sam, but his community did not fulfill it. And Abraham departed this world and took a covenant from his people to be faithful to his son [3] Isma‘il, but his community did not fulfill it. And Moses departed this world and took a covenant from his people to be faithful to his legatee, Yusha‘ b. Nun, but his community did not fulfill it. And Jesus son of Mary was raised to heaven [4] after having taken a covenant from his people [to be faithful] to his legatee, Sham‘un b. Hammun al-Safa, but his community did not fulfill it. And indeed I will soon part from you and depart from among you. I have taken a covenant with my community concerning [5] ‘Ali b. Abi Talib, and it will surely follow the way of the nations before it in opposing and disobeying my legatee. Behold, I am renewing my covenant with you concerning ‘Ali: so whoever breaks it, he only breaks it against himself; and whoever fulfills what he has covenanted with Allah, He will grant him a mighty reward [6]. O people, ‘Ali is your Imam after me and my successor over you. He is my legatee, my minister, my brother, my helper, the husband of my daughter, the father of my children, the holder of my intercession, my Basin, and my Banner. Whoever denies him has denied me, and whoever denies me has denied Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And whoever acknowledges his Imamate has acknowledged my prophethood, and whoever acknowledges my prophethood has acknowledged the oneness of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O people, whoever disobeys ‘Ali has disobeyed me, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah, Mighty and Majestic; and whoever obeys ‘Ali has obeyed me, and whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O people, whoever rejects ‘Ali in word or deed has rejected me, and whoever has rejected me has rejected Allah, Mighty and Majestic, above His Throne. O people, whoever among you chooses an Imam over ‘Ali has chosen a prophet over me; and whoever chooses a prophet over me has chosen a lord over Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O people, ‘Ali is the master of the legatees, the leader of the radiant, the guardian of the believers—his friend is my friend, and my friend is the friend of Allah; his enemy is my enemy, and my enemy is the enemy of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. O people, fulfill Allah’s covenant regarding ‘Ali, and He will fulfill for you with the Garden [1] on the Day of Resurrection.”

99-/441 Al-‘Ayyashi: from Sama‘ah b. Mihran, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Fulfill My covenant; I will fulfill your covenant. He said: “Fulfill [it] with the wilayah of ‘Ali as an obligation from Allah; I will fulfill for you [with] the Garden.”

And believe in what I have revealed, verifying that which is with you, and be not the first to deny it, neither take a mean price for My communications; and Me, Me alone, should you fear. (Qur’an 2:41, M. H. Shakir)

99-/442 The Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to the Jews: And believe—O Jews—in what I have revealed to Muhammad [2] of mention of his prophethood and of the tidings of the Imamate of his brother ‘Ali and his pure progeny, confirming what is with you; for the like of this mention is in your Book: that Muhammad the Prophet is the master of the first and the last, supported by the master of the legatees and the successor of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, the Redeemer (Faruq) of this community, the Gate of the City of Wisdom, and the legatee of the Messenger of [3] Mercy. And do not sell My signs—revealed concerning the prophethood of Muhammad, the Imamate of ‘Ali, and the pure ones of his progeny—for a paltry price by denying them…”
