English translation:

99-/6197 — Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father reported from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) who said: “Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil brought the Buraq to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). One of them took hold of the bridle, another held the stirrup, and the third arranged his clothes upon it. The Buraq shuddered, so Gabriel (peace be upon him) struck it and said to it, ‘Be calm, O Buraq, for no prophet before him has ridden you, and none like him will ride you after him.’ It then became gentle with him and raised him up, not by a great height, while Gabriel (peace be upon him) was with him, showing him the signs in the heavens and the earth.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: While I was traveling, a caller from my right cried out, ‘O Muhammad!’ I did not answer him nor turn to him. Then a caller from my left cried out, ‘O Muhammad!’ I did not answer him nor turn to him. Then a woman confronted me, bare of her forearms, adorned with every adornment of this world, and she said, ‘O Muhammad, look at me so that I may speak to you.’ I did not turn to her. Then I proceeded and heard a voice that frightened me, and I passed on. Gabriel descended with me and said, ‘Pray.’ So I dismounted and prayed. He said to me, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Taybah, and to it will be your migration.’ Then I mounted and we went on as Allah willed, and he said to me, ‘Dismount and pray.’ I dismounted and prayed. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘You prayed at Mount Sinai where Allah spoke to Moses directly.’ Then I mounted and we went on as Allah willed, and he said, ‘Dismount and pray.’ I dismounted and prayed. He said, ‘Do you know where you prayed?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘You prayed in Bayt Lahm. Bayt Lahm is in the region of Bayt al‑Maqdis, where Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him) was born.’

Then I mounted and we went on until we came to Bayt al‑Maqdis. I tied the Buraq to the ring by which the prophets used to tie it. I entered the mosque with Gabriel (peace be upon him) at my side, and we found Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them), and those whom Allah willed from among the prophets of Allah, assembled for me. The prayer was established, and I had no doubt except that Gabriel would lead us. When they had lined up, Gabriel took my arm and put me forward, so I led them in prayer—and there is no boast in that.

Then the custodian brought me three vessels: one containing milk, one containing water, and one containing wine. I heard a caller say, ‘If he takes the water he will drown and his nation will drown; if he takes the wine he will go astray and his nation will go astray; if he takes the milk he will be guided and his nation will be guided.’ I took the milk and drank from it. Gabriel said, ‘You have been guided, and your nation has been guided.’ Then he said to me, ‘What did you see along your way?’ I said, ‘A caller called me from my right.’ He said, ‘Did you answer him?’ I said, ‘No, and I did not turn to him.’ He said, ‘That was the caller of the Jews; had you answered him, your nation after you would have become Jews.’ Then he said, ‘What did you see?’ I said, ‘A caller called me from my left.’ He said, ‘Did you answer him?’ I said, ‘No, and I did not turn to him.’ He said, ‘That was the caller of the Christians; had you answered him, your nation after you would have become Christians.’ Then he said, ‘What confronted you?’ I said, ‘A woman uncovered of her forearms, upon her was every adornment of the world. She said: O Muhammad, look at me so I may speak to you.’ He said, ‘Did you speak to her?’ I said, ‘I did not speak to her, nor did I turn to her.’ He said, ‘That was the world; had you spoken to her, your nation would have preferred the world over the Hereafter.’ Then I heard a sound that frightened me. Gabriel said to me, ‘Do you hear it, O Muhammad?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is a rock that I hurled from the edge of Hell seventy years ago; this is the time it has come to rest.’ They said: After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not laugh until he passed away.

He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Gabriel ascended and I ascended with him to the lowest heaven, and over it was an angel called Isma‘il; he is the one in charge of the snatching that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Except him who snatches away but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.’ [as‑Ṣāffāt 37:10, Shakir]. Below him were seventy thousand angels, and beneath each angel there were seventy thousand angels. He said, ‘O Gabriel, who is this with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Has he been sent?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He opened the gate; I greeted him and he returned my greeting; I sought forgiveness for him and he sought forgiveness for me, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother [the sincere adviser and the righteous prophet].’ The angels received me until I entered the lowest heaven. No angel met me except smiling and rejoicing, until an angel met me whose creation I had never seen greater than him—repulsive in appearance, manifestly angry. He said to me the like of what they said in supplication, except that he did not smile, and I did not see in him the rejoicing I had seen in those angels who smiled. I said, ‘Who is this, O Gabriel, for I have been alarmed by him?’ He said, ‘It is fitting that you be alarmed by him; all of us are alarmed by him. This is Malik, the keeper of the Fire; he has never smiled. Ever since Allah entrusted Hell to him, he increases every day in anger and fury against the enemies of Allah and the people of His disobedience; Allah takes vengeance upon them through him. If he were to smile at anyone before you, or would be smiling at anyone after you, he would have smiled at you; but he does not smile.’ I greeted him; he returned my greeting and gave me the good news of Paradise. I said to Gabriel, who is in the station Allah described: ‘One obeyed there, and faithful in trust’ [at‑Takwīr 81:21, Shakir], ‘Will you not command him to show me the Fire?’ Gabriel said to him, ‘O Malik, show Muhammad the Fire.’ He uncovered its covering and opened a gate of it. A flame shot up from it into the heavens, and it seethed and surged until I thought, from what I saw, that it would almost seize me. I said, ‘O Gabriel, tell him to put back its covering upon it.’ He commanded it and said to it, ‘Return,’ so it returned to its place from which it had come out.

Then I went on and I saw a man, dark [Adam], massive. I said, ‘Who is this, O Gabriel?’ He said, ‘This is your father Adam.’ His descendants were presented to him, and he would say, ‘A good spirit and a good fragrance from a good body.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) recited from Surah al‑Muṭaffifīn up to seventeen verses: ‘Nay! most surely the record of the righteous shall be in the highest places. And what will make you know what the highest places are? It is a written book…’ [al‑Muṭaffifīn 83:18‑20, Shakir], to its end. I greeted my father Adam, and he greeted me; I sought forgiveness for him and he sought forgiveness for me, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous son, the righteous prophet, sent in the righteous time.’”

English translation:

99-/6198 — Then Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Al‑Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said: “While I was sleeping in al‑Abtah, with ‘Ali on my right, Ja‘far on my left, and Hamzah before me, I heard the rustling of the angels’ wings, and someone said, ‘To which of them have you been sent, O Gabriel?’ He replied, ‘To this one,’ and pointed to me. Then he said, ‘He is the master of the children of Adam; and this is his legatee (wasiyy), his minister, his son‑in‑law, and his successor over his community; and this is his uncle, the master of martyrs, Hamzah; and this is his cousin Ja‘far, who has two dyed wings with which he flies in Paradise along with the angels. Leave him: let his eyes sleep, his ears hear, and his heart comprehend. Strike for him a parable: a king who built a house, prepared a banquet, and sent a caller.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: ‘The King is Allah; the house is the world; the banquet is Paradise; and I am the caller.’

He said: ‘Then Gabriel caught up with him with the Buraq and carried him by night to Bayt al‑Maqdis, showed him the prayer‑niches of the prophets and the signs of the prophets. He prayed there and returned him that very night to Mecca. On his return he passed by a caravan of Quraysh. They had water in vessels; he drank from it and poured out the remainder of the water. They had lost a camel and were looking for it. When morning came he said to Quraysh: “Allah carried me by night this night to Bayt al‑Maqdis, and showed me the prayer‑niches of the prophets and the signs of the prophets. I passed by a caravan of yours at such‑and‑such a place; they had water in vessels; I drank from it and poured out the remainder of that water; and they had lost a camel.” Abu Jahl said: “Your opportunity with Muhammad has now come; ask him how many pillars and lamps there are in it.” They said: “O Muhammad, there are those here who have entered Bayt al‑Maqdis; describe to us how many pillars, lamps, and prayer‑niches it has.” Gabriel came and suspended the image of Bayt al‑Maqdis opposite his face, and he began to inform them of what they asked him. When he had informed them, they said: “Until the caravan arrives and we ask them about what you have said.” He said to them: “And the confirmation of that is that the caravan will appear to you at sunrise, led by a red camel.” In the morning they kept looking toward the pass, saying: “The sun will rise any moment.” While they were like that, the caravan appeared with the rising of the sun, led by a red camel. They asked the caravan about what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had said, and they replied: “Indeed, that happened. A camel of ours was lost at such‑and‑such a place. We put down water, and in the morning it had been poured out.” But that only increased them in defiance.’”
