Ibrahim Ayah 37

Quran 14:37 (M. H. Shakir): Our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful.

Translation: All people by virtue of what they put forward of kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)—thus, he is of the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) due to his allegiance to the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them). For he is not of the people in their very persons, but is of them through his loyalty to them and his following them. Such is Allah’s ruling in His Book: “And whoever among you takes them as guardians, then surely he is one of them” [1], and the statement of Ibrahim: “So whoever follows me is surely of me, and whoever disobeys me, then surely You are Forgiving, Merciful.”

Translation (99-/5763 _8-): Ibn Shahr Āshūb: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), regarding His statement, “and keep me and my sons away from worshiping idols,” said: “The prayer (of Ibrahim) culminated in me and in Ali.” And in a report: “I am the supplication of Ibrahim.” By this he meant the pure ones, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): “I was transferred from the loins of the pure to the wombs of the pure; the fornication of the Age of Ignorance did not touch me.” [2].

Translation: The narration of ‘Abdullah b. Mas‘ūd has already preceded regarding the meaning of the verse from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) concerning His statement, “Surely I will make you an Imam for mankind,” from Surat al-Baqarah, transmitted by our companions and by the generality [3].

H. Shakir]

Translation (99-/5764 _1-): ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from Hisham, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was residing in the Syrian desert. When Isma‘il (peace be upon him) was born to him from Hajar, Sarah was deeply grieved by that because she had no child from him. She would harm Ibrahim (peace be upon him) regarding Hajar and distress him. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) complained of that to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, so Allah revealed to him: ‘The likeness of woman is the likeness of a crooked rib: if you leave it you will enjoy it, and if you straighten it you will break it.’ Then He commanded him to take out Isma‘il and his mother. Ibrahim said: ‘My Lord, to which place?’ He said: ‘To My sanctuary and My secure place, and the first patch of land I created on earth, which is Mecca.’ So Allah sent down Gabriel to him with the Buraq, and he carried Hajar and Isma‘il and Ibrahim (peace be upon them). Ibrahim (peace be upon him) would not pass a pleasing place with trees, palms, and crops except that he would say: ‘O Gabriel, to here, to here!’ Gabriel would say: ‘No; proceed, proceed,’ until he came to Mecca, and he set him down in the place of the House.

Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) had covenanted with Sarah that he would not alight until he returned to her. When they descended in that place there were trees there, so Hajar cast a cloak she had over the trees and they took shade beneath it. When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had settled them and wanted to depart from them back to Sarah, Hajar said to him: ‘O Ibrahim, why do you leave us in a place with no companion, no water, and no crops?’ Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: ‘Allah is the One who commanded me to place you in this place, and He will suffice you.’ Then he departed from them. When he reached Kudā— a mountain in Dhi Tuwa— Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned back to them and said: ‘Our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Your Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful’ (14:37). Then he went on, and Hajar remained.” And the report is long; we have mentioned it in Surat al-Baqarah at His statement, “And when Ibrahim and Isma‘il raised the foundations of the House.” [1].

Translation (99-/5772 _9-): From al-Fadl b. Musa al-Katib, from Abu al-Hasan Musa b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them both), who said: “When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) settled Isma‘il (peace be upon him) and Hajar in Mecca and bade them farewell to depart from them, they wept. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to them: ‘What makes you weep? I have left you in the land most beloved to Allah and in the sanctuary of Allah.’ Hajar said to him: ‘O Ibrahim, I did not think a prophet like you would do what you have done.’ He said: ‘And what have I done?’ She said: ‘You have left a weak woman and a weak boy, with no means for them, without a human companion, with no manifest water, no ripened crop, and no udder to be milked!’ Ibrahim (peace be upon him) felt tender and his eyes overflowed when he heard from her, so he came until he reached the door of the Sacred House of Allah, and he took hold of the two doorposts of the Ka‘bah, then said: ‘O Allah, surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Your Sacred House, our Lord, that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful’ (14:37).”

Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “Allah revealed to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): ‘Ascend Abu Qubays and call out to the people: O assembly of creatures, Allah commands you to perform the pilgrimage to this House in Mecca as a sacred obligation upon whoever is able to find a way to it, as an ordinance from Allah.’ So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) ascended Abu Qubays and called out to the people in the loudest voice: ‘O assembly of creatures, Allah commands you to perform the pilgrimage to this House in Mecca as a sacred obligation upon whoever is able to find a way to it, as an ordinance from Allah.’ Allah extended Ibrahim’s voice until he made to hear it the people of the east and the west and what is between them, of all that Allah had decreed and determined in the loins of men of the drops (of seed) and all that Allah had decreed and determined in the wombs of women until the Day of Resurrection. There—O Fadl—Hajj became obligatory upon all creatures. So the talbiyah from the pilgrim in the days of Hajj is his response to the call of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) that day to Hajj on behalf of Allah.”

Translation (99-/5773 _10-): From Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr, from Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: “Ibrahim, the Friend of the All-Merciful (blessings of Allah be upon him), asked his Lord when he settled his offspring in the sanctuary, and said: ‘My Lord, provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful.’ Allah, blessed and exalted, commanded a piece from the Jordan until it came and circumambulated the House seven times. Then Allah commanded it to say: ‘al-Ta’if,’ so it was named al-Ta’if for its circumambulation of the House.”

Translation (99-/5774 _11-): From Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His statement, “Therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them”: “Indeed, He did not mean all the people. You are those (meant), and your counterparts. Your likeness among the people is like the white hair in the black bull, or the black hair in the white bull.

Translation (99-/5776 _13-): And in another narration from him, he said: We were in al-Fustat with Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), about fifty men. He sat after a long silence from us and said: “What is the matter with you that you do not speak? Perhaps you think that I am a prophet? No, by Allah, I am not that. But in me there is a near kinship to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and a birth: whoever maintains it, Allah maintains him; whoever loves it, Allah loves him; and whoever honors it, Allah honors him. Do you know which spot is most excellent in station with Allah?” No one spoke, so he answered himself and said: “That is Mecca the Sacred, which He chose for Himself as a sanctuary and placed His House therein.”

Then he said: “Do you know which spot is more excellent than Mecca?” No one spoke, so he answered himself and said: “What is between the Black Stone and the door of the Ka‘bah—that is the enclosure of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) himself, where he used to drive his sheep and pray. By Allah, if a servant were to place his feet together in that spot, standing in prayer by day until night enveloped him, and standing in prayer by night until day enveloped him, then did not acknowledge our right, we the People of the House, nor grant us our due, Allah would never accept anything from him ever.

Indeed, our father Ibrahim (blessings of Allah be upon him) was, among what he stipulated with his Lord, that he said: ‘Therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them.’ He certainly did not say: ‘all people.’ You are those (meant by it), may Allah have mercy on you, and your counterparts. Your likeness among the people is like the white hair in the black bull, or the black hair in the white bull. It befits the people to perform Hajj to this House and to venerate it for Allah’s veneration of it, and to meet us wherever we are; we are the guides to Allah.”

And in another report: “Do you know which spot is most inviolable with Allah?” No one spoke, and he answered himself: “It is what lies between the Black Corner and the Station (of Ibrahim) up to the door of the Ka‘bah—that is the enclosure of Isma‘il (peace be upon him) where he used to drive his sheep.” Then he mentioned the rest of the report.

Translation (99-/5777 _14-): From al-Fudayl b. Yasār, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: He looked at the people circumambulating the Ka‘bah and said: “Thus they used to circumambulate in the Jahiliyyah. They were only commanded to circumambulate then depart to us to inform us of their allegiance and present to us their support.” Then he recited this verse: “Therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them,” and said: “(They are) the Family of Muhammad,” then said: “To us, to us.”

The report of al-Bāqir (peace be upon him) with Qatādah has already preceded in the section “Introductions to the Book,” and it will come under His statement: “And We determined therein the journey: travel therein by nights and days in security.” And under His statement: “And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not divided,” from Surat Āl ‘Imrān, there preceded the hadith of Jābir b. ‘Abdillah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

Quran 14:38 (M. H. Shakir): Our Lord! surely Thou knowest what we hide and what we make public, and nothing in the earth nor in the heaven is hidden from Allah.

Quran 14:39 (M. H. Shakir): Praise be to Allah, Who has given me in old age Ismail and Ishaq; most surely my Lord is the Hearer of prayer.

Quran 14:40 (M. H. Shakir): My Lord! make me keep up prayer and from my offspring (too), O our Lord, and accept my prayer.

Quran 14:41 (M. H. Shakir): O our Lord! grant me protection and my parents and the believers on the day when the reckoning shall come to pass.

Quran 14:42–46 (M. H. Shakir): And do not think Allah to be heedless of what the unjust do; He only respites them to a day when the eyes shall stare (in terror), Hastening forward, their heads upraised, their eyes not reverting to them and their hearts vacant. And warn people of the day when the chastisement shall come to them, then those who were unjust will say: O our Lord! respite us to a near term, (so) we shall respond to Thy call and follow the messengers. What! did you not swear before (that) there will be no passing away for you! And you dwell in the abodes of those who were unjust to themselves, and it is clear to you how We dealt with them and (how) We have made (them) examples. And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan were such that the mountains should pass away thereby.
