Hud Ayah 8-11

And His Throne was upon the water, and the water was upon the air, and the air does not flow.

M. H. Shakir: And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods—and His Throne was on the water—that He might try you (to see) which of you is best in deeds...

99-/5018 -8- Muhammad ibn ‘Imrān al-‘Ijlī said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): What was the location of the House when the water was, in the word of Allah, “and His Throne was on the water”? He said: “It was a white mahāh,” meaning a pearl.

99-/5019 -9- It is related from ‘Alī, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), that he was asked about the duration for which His Throne was upon the water before He created the earth and the heaven. He (peace be upon him) said: “Are you able to calculate?” It was said to him: Yes. He said: “If the earth from the east to the west, and from the earth to the heaven, were mustard seeds, and then you, with your weakness, were tasked to carry them seed by seed from the east to the west until you exhausted them, that would be a quarter of a tenth of a part of seventy thousand parts of the duration of our Lord’s Throne being upon the water, before He created the earth and the heaven.” Then he (peace be upon him) said: “I have only given you an example.”

More will come, God willing, in Sūrat Tāhā regarding His saying: “The All‑beneficent sat firm upon the Throne.” [1]

M. H. Shakir: And if We hold back from them the punishment until a stated period, they will certainly say: What detains it? Now surely on the day when it will come to them it shall not be averted from them and that which they mocked at shall beset them on all sides. And if We make man taste mercy from Us, then take it off from him, most surely he is despairing, ungrateful. And if We make him taste favor after harm has afflicted him, he will most surely say: The evils are gone away from me; surely he is exultant, boastful; Except those who are patient and do good, these it is for whom is forgiveness and a great reward.

99-/5020 -10- Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al‑Nu‘mānī ... from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, “And if We hold back from them the punishment until a stated period”: He said, “The punishment is the emergence of the Qāʾim (peace be upon him), and the ‘stated period’ is the number of the people of Badr—his companions.”

99-/5021 -11- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm ... from ‘Alī (blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding His saying, “And if We hold back from them the punishment until a stated period, they will surely say, ‘What detains it?’”: He said, “The ‘stated period’ is the companions of the Qāʾim (peace be upon him)—three hundred and a few more.”

/5022 -3- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: “The term umma in the Book of Allah has many usages. Among them: a creed, as in His saying: ‘Mankind is a single nation’ [1], meaning on one creed. Among them: a group of people, as in His saying: ‘He found on it a group of men watering’ [2], meaning a group. Among them: a single person whom Allah has called an umma, as in His saying: ‘Surely Ibrahim was an exemplar, obedient to Allah, upright’ [3]. Among them: all species of animals, as in His saying: ‘and there is not a nation but a warner has gone among them’ [4]. Among them: the community of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family), as in His saying: ‘Thus have We sent you among a nation before which other nations have passed away’ [5], and that is the community of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family). Among them: a time-span, as in His saying: ‘And the one who was delivered of the two and (now) remembered after a long time’ [6], i.e., after a time; and His saying: ‘until a stated period’ means a time. Among them: all creation, as in His saying: ‘And you shall see every nation kneeling; every nation shall be called to its book today’ [7], and His saying: ‘And on the day when We will raise up a witness out of every nation, then shall no permission be given to those who disbelieve, nor shall they be made to solicit favor’ [8]—and the like is abundant.”

And His saying, ‘Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together,’ means the companions of the Qāʾim (peace be upon him), three hundred and a few more men. 99-/5027 -8- Al‑Ṭabrisī: It is said that the “stated period” are the companions of the Mahdī (peace be upon him) at the end of time—three hundred and a few more men, like the number of the people of Badr—who gather in a single hour as autumn clouds gather. He said: and this is what is related from Abū Ja‘far and Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon them both).

99-/5028 -9- Sharaf al‑Dīn al‑Najafī said: This is supported by what Muḥammad ibn Jumhūr narrated from Ḥammād ibn ‘Īsā, from Ḥarīz, who said: Some of our companions narrated from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, “And if We hold back from them the punishment until a stated period”: He said, “The punishment is the Qāʾim (peace be upon him)—a punishment upon his enemies—and the ‘stated period’ are those who rise with him, by the number of the people of Badr.”

/5029 -10- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm, on His saying: “And if We hold back from them the punishment until a stated period”: He said: “If We grant them enjoyment in this world until the emergence of the Qāʾim (peace be upon him), then We will bring them back and punish them. ‘They will certainly say, “What detains it?”’—that is, they will say mockingly: ‘Surely the Qāʾim will not rise, will not emerge!’ So Allah said: ‘Now surely on the day when it will come to them it shall not be averted from them, and there shall beset them that which they used to mock at.’”

/5030 -11- And ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said regarding His saying: “And if We make man taste mercy from Us, then take it off from him, most surely he is despairing, ungrateful; and if We make him taste favor after harm has afflicted him, he will most surely say: ‘The evils are gone away from me’—surely he is exultant, boastful—except those who are patient and do good”: He said: “When Allah enriches a servant and then he becomes poor, despair, anguish, and panic befall him; and when Allah removes that from him, he rejoices and says, ‘The evils are gone away from me.’ Surely he is exultant, boastful—except those who are patient in hardship and do good in ease.”

M. H. Shakir: Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you and your heart will be straitened by it because they say: Why has not a treasure been sent down upon him or an angel come with him? You are only a warner; and Allah is custodian over all things.

99-/5031 -1- Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb ... from ‘Ammār ibn Suwayd, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) say regarding this verse, “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you...” He said: “When the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) arrived at Qudayd, he said to ‘Alī (peace be upon him): ‘O ‘Alī, I asked my Lord to join me and you in mutual loyalty, and He did; and I asked my Lord to make me and you brothers, and He did; and I asked my Lord to make you my executor, and He did.’ Then two men from Quraysh said: ‘By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out water skin is more beloved to us than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. Why did he not ask his Lord for an angel to support him against his enemy, or a treasure to suffice him from his need?! By Allah, whenever he calls him to truth or to falsehood, he answers him.’ So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down: ‘Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you and your heart will be straitened by it...’ to the end of the verse.”

99-/5032 -2- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm ... from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The reason for the revelation of this verse is that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) went out one day and said to ‘Alī (peace be upon him): ‘O ‘Alī, last night I asked Allah to make you my minister, and He did; and I asked Him to make you my executor, and He did; and I asked Him to make you my successor over my community, and He did.’ Then a man from the Companions said: ‘By Allah, a measure of dates in a worn-out water skin is more beloved to me than what Muhammad asked of his Lord. Should he not have asked for an angel to support him, or wealth to aid him in his poverty?! By Allah, never has he called ‘Alī to truth or to falsehood but that he answered him.’ Then Allah revealed to His Messenger: ‘Then maybe you will give up...’ (the verse).”

99-/5033 -3- Al‑Shaykh in his Amālī narrated this hadith, saying: Abū ‘Abdillāh Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us, who said: Abū ... (and so on).
