Third — The impossibility of vision

Third — The impossibility of vision:

The Ahl al-Ḥadīth and the Ashʿarīs — who are a large group among the Muslims — believe in the possibility of seeing Allah, the Exalted, and they hold that Allah will appear to the people on the Day of Resurrection just as the full moon appears on a clear night. They inferred this view from a group of narrations [1] and verses of the Holy Qur’an.

Shaykh al-Ashʿarī says in al-Ibānah: “We believe that Allah, the Exalted, will be seen in the hereafter with eyesight, just as the moon is seen on a full moon night. The believers will see Him, just as the narrations from the Messenger of Allah صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم have stated.” [2] They interpreted with this view the words of Allah, the Exalted: "(كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ * وَتَذَرُونَ الْآخِرَةَ * وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ * إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ)" (Qur'an 75:20–23) “Nay! You love the present life, and neglect the hereafter. (Some) faces on that day shall be bright, looking to their Lord.” (M. H. Shakir)

Al-Fāḍil al-Qūshjī says: If naẓar (looking) is in the sense of “waiting,” it is used without a preposition; one says: intazartu (I waited). But if it means “seeing,” it is used with the preposition ilā (to/toward), and since in this verse naẓar is used with ilā, it is taken to mean "seeing."

In contrast to this approach, the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt عليهم‌السلام, after the Messenger of Allah صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم, insisted on the impossibility of seeing Allah, the Exalted. They interpreted the narrations and verses — from which the Ahl al-Ḥadīth and Ashʿarīs deduced the possibility of seeing — with meanings appropriate to the context of those verses and narrations.

From ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Harawī, he said: I said to ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā عليه‌السلام: O son of the Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the ḥadīth narrated by the people of ḥadīth that the believers will visit their Lord from their abodes in Paradise?

He عليه‌السلام replied: “O Abā al-Ṣalt, surely Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has given preference to His Prophet Muḥammad صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم over all His creation — among the Prophets and angels. He made obedience to him obedience to Himself, and following him following Himself, and visiting him in this world and the Hereafter as visiting Him. Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: (مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطاعَ اللهَ)“Whoever obeys the Messenger, indeed obeys Allah” (Qur’an 4:80), and He says: (إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُبايِعُونَكَ إِنَّما يُبايِعُونَ اللهَ يَدُ اللهِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمْ)“Surely those who swear allegiance to you do but swear allegiance to Allah; the hand of Allah is above their hands.” (Qur’an 48:10)

And the Prophet صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم said: ‘Whoever visits me during my lifetime or after my death has indeed visited Allah.’ The rank of the Prophet صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم in Paradise is the highest of ranks. So whoever visits him from his own abode to his rank in Paradise has indeed visited Allah, Blessed and Exalted.”【7】
