Al-Anbiya Ayah 51-71

7155-/1 (Tafsīr al-Qummī 2:71)

And certainly We gave to Abraham his rectitude before, and We knew him fully well — to His saying — in it for the nations. [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:51-71] (M. H. Shakir)

Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, related Abraham’s words to his people and his father, saying: “And certainly We gave to Abraham his rectitude before” up to His saying: “after you turn your backs retreating.”

He said: When Abraham (peace be upon him) forbade them and argued against their worship of idols, but they would not desist, a festival of theirs approached. Nimrod went out, along with everyone in his kingdom, to their festival; he disliked that Abraham go out with him and assigned him to guard the idol-house. When they left, Abraham brought some food and took it into the idol-house. He would approach each idol and say to it: “Eat and speak!” When it did not answer him, he took the adze and broke its hands and feet, until he had done that to all the idols; then he hung the adze around the neck of their largest one, which stood at the front.

When the king and those with him returned from the festival, they saw the idols shattered, and they said: “Who has done this to our gods? Most surely he is one of the unjust.” They said: “We heard a youth mention them; he is called Abraham,” and he was the son of Āzar. So they brought him to Nimrod. Nimrod said to Āzar: “You have betrayed me and concealed this child from me?” He said: “O King, this is his mother’s doing, and she said she would argue his case.”

Nimrod summoned Abraham’s mother and said to her: “What made you conceal from me the matter of this boy until he did to our gods what he did?” She said: “O King, out of regard for your subjects.” He said: “How so?” She said: “I saw you killing your subjects’ children, and the offspring would perish. I thought: if this is the one you seek, I would hand him over to you to kill and thus you would cease killing people’s children; and if it is not so, then our child would remain to us. Now you have got him, so do as you wish, but cease killing people’s children.” He approved her view. Then he said to Abraham (peace be upon him): “Who has done this to our gods, O Abraham?” He (peace be upon him) said: “The largest of them did it, so ask them, if they speak.”

Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, their largest did not do it, and Abraham (peace be upon him) did not lie.” It was said to him: “How so?” He said: “He only said: ‘The largest of them did it—if it speaks; and if it does not speak, then their largest did nothing.’”

They Nimrod consulted his people about Abraham (peace be upon him), and they said to him: “Burn him, and help your gods if you are doers.” [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:68] (M. H. Shakir)

Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said: “The Pharaoh of Abraham and his followers were without right guidance, for they said to Nimrod: ‘Burn him, and help your gods if you are doers.’ But the Pharaoh of Moses and his followers were with right guidance, for when he consulted his people about Moses they said: ‘Put him off and his brother, and send collectors into the cities, to bring to you every skillful magician.’” [Ash-Shu‘arā’ 26:36-37] (M. H. Shakir)

ash-Shu‘arā’ 26:36-37.

So Abraham (peace be upon him) was imprisoned, and firewood was gathered for him, until the day came when Nimrod cast Abraham (peace be upon him) into the fire. Nimrod and his troops came forth—and Nimrod had a structure built from which he could look at Abraham (peace be upon him) and see how the fire would take him. Iblīs came and fashioned for them a catapult, because no one could approach that fire, and any bird that passed through the air would burn. They placed Abraham (peace be upon him) in the catapult, and his father came and struck him a blow, saying to him: “Turn back from what you are upon.”

The Lord sent angels down to the lowest heaven, and nothing remained but that it petitioned its Lord. The earth said: “O Lord, there is no one upon my back who worships You besides him—shall he be burned?” The angels said: “O Lord, Your Friend Abraham is to be burned?” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “If he calls upon Me, I will suffice him.” And Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: “O Lord, Your Friend Abraham—there is no one upon the earth who worships You besides him—yet You have empowered his enemy over him to burn him with fire?” He said: “Be silent. Only a servant like you, who fears missing the moment, says such a thing. He is My servant; I will take him if I wish, and if he calls upon Me I will answer him.”

So Abraham (peace be upon him) supplicated his Lord with Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ: “O Allah, O One, O Unique One, O Self-Sufficient, O He Who neither begets nor is begotten, and none is like unto Him—deliver me from the fire by Your mercy.”

Gabriel met him in the air when he had been placed in the catapult and said: “O Abraham, do you have any need of me?” Abraham (peace be upon him) said: “As for you, no; but as for the Lord of the worlds, yes.” Then Gabriel handed him a ring on which was written: “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I have put my back against Allah, entrusted my affair to Allah, and consigned my affair to Allah.” Then Allah revealed to the fire: “Be cool,” so Abraham’s teeth chattered from the cold, until He said: “and safe for Abraham.” [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:69] (M. H. Shakir)

Gabriel descended and sat with him, conversing with him in the fire. Nimrod looked at him and said: “Whoever takes a god, let him take a god like the God of Abraham.” One of Nimrod’s great men said: “I have adjured the fire not to burn him.” Then a column of fire came out toward the man and burned him. Lot believed in him and left with him, migrating to Syria. Nimrod looked at Abraham (peace be upon him) in a green garden within the fire, with an elder sitting and speaking to him, and said to Āzar: “How honored your son is with his Lord!”

He said: The gecko was blowing upon Abraham’s fire, while the frog was carrying water to extinguish it. He said: When Allah said to the fire, “Be cool and safe,” fire did not work in the world for three days. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And they intended a device against him, but We made them the greatest losers.” [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:70] (M. H. Shakir) And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the nations,” meaning al-Shām (Syria), the black-earth of Kūfa, and Kūthā Rabbā. [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:71] (M. H. Shakir)

Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb—from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Abī Naṣr, from Abān b. ‘Uthmān, from Ḥujr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him)—said: “Abraham (peace be upon him) opposed his people and disparaged their gods until he was brought in to Nimrod and disputed with him. Abraham (peace be upon him) said: ‘My Lord is He Who gives life and causes death.’ He said: ‘I (too) give life and cause death.’ Abraham said: ‘Then surely Allah causes the sun to rise from the east; then make it rise from the west,’ so he who disbelieved was confounded; and Allah does not guide the unjust people.” [Al-Baqarah 2:258] (M. H. Shakir) Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “He disparaged their gods: ‘Then he looked a look at the stars. Then he said: Surely I am sick.’” [Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:88-89] (M. H. Shakir) Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, he was not sick, and he did not lie.” When they turned their backs on him, retreating to a festival of theirs, Abraham (may Allah bless him and his Family) entered upon their gods with an adze and smashed them except their largest; he placed the adze on its neck. They returned to their gods and saw what had been done to them, and said: “By Allah, none dared this and smashed them but the youth who used to disparage them and disavow them.” They found no execution more severe for him than fire, so they gathered firewood and chose the best of it, until the day came to burn him. Nimrod and his troops came forth, and a structure had been built for him to see how the fire would take Abraham. Abraham (may Allah bless him) was placed in a catapult, and the earth said: “O Lord, there is no one upon my back who worships You besides him—shall he be burned with fire?” The Lord said: “If he calls upon Me, I will suffice him.”

From Abān, from Muḥammad b. Marwān, from one who narrated it from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “The supplication of Abraham (peace be upon him) that day was: ‘O One, O One; O Self-Sufficient, O Self-Sufficient; O He Who neither begets nor is begotten, and none is like unto Him. Then I rely upon Allah.’ The Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said: ‘You are sufficed,’ and He said to the fire: ‘Be cool,’ so Abraham’s teeth chattered from the cold, until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘and safe for Abraham.’ [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:69] (M. H. Shakir) Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and behold, he was sitting with Abraham, speaking to him in the fire. Nimrod said: ‘Whoever takes a god, let him take a god like the God of Abraham.’ One of their great men said: ‘I have adjured the fire not to burn him.’ A tongue of fire took hold toward him until it burned him. Then Lot believed in him and departed as an emigrant to Syria—he, Sarah, and Lot.”

Ibn Bābawayh said: Muhammad b. Mūsā b. al-Mutawakkil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us… Ismā‘īl b. al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) about Moses son of ‘Imrān (peace be upon him): when he saw their ropes and staffs, how did he feel a fear within himself, while Abraham (peace be upon him) did not feel it when he was placed in the catapult and hurled toward the fire? He (peace be upon him) said: “When Abraham (peace be upon him) was placed in the catapult and hurled into the fire, he was supported by the lights of Allah’s Proofs that were in his loins, whereas Moses (peace be upon him) was not thus; for that reason he felt fear within himself, whereas Abraham (peace be upon him) did not.”

And from him: from Muḥammad b. ‘Alī Mājīlawaih… from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him)—in a ḥadīth—who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said: When Abraham (peace be upon him) was cast into the fire, he said: ‘O Allah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad that You deliver me from it.’ So Allah made it coolness and peace for him.”

And from him… from al-Ṣādiq Ja‘far b. Muḥammad (peace be upon him)—in a report mentioning “And when his Lord tried Abraham with words, then he fulfilled them”—he said: “Among them is courage, which the days have revealed about him, as indicated by His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? They said: We found our fathers worshipping them. He said: Certainly you have been, you and your fathers, in manifest error. They said: Have you brought to us the truth, or are you one of the triflers? He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this. And, by Allah! I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away, turning back. So he broke them into pieces, except the chief of them, that haply they may return to it.’” [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:52-58] (M. H. Shakir) “And the one man’s standing up to thousands of the enemies of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is the perfection of courage.”

The Shaykh in his Amālī… from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), said: “Nimrod had a platform overlooking the fire. After three days he looked out over the fire along with Āzar, and there was Abraham (peace be upon him) with an elder conversing with him in a green garden. Nimrod turned to Āzar and said: ‘O Āzar, how honored your son is with his Lord!’ Then Nimrod said to Abraham (peace be upon him): ‘Leave from me, and do not dwell with me.’”

‘Umar b. Ibrāhīm al-Awsī said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said to Gabriel (peace be upon him): “You, with your power—have you ever been wearied, meaning afflicted by fatigue and hardship?” He said: “Yes, O Muhammad—three times. The day Abraham (peace be upon him) was thrown into the fire, Allah Most High revealed to me: ‘Catch up with him. By My might and My majesty, if the fire reaches him before you do, I shall erase your name from the register of the angels.’ I descended swiftly and reached him between the fire and the air and said: ‘O Abraham, do you have a need?’ He said: ‘As for Allah, yes; as for you, no.’ The second time: when Abraham was commanded to slaughter his son Ishmael, Allah Most High revealed to me: ‘Catch up with him. By My might and My majesty, if the knife reaches his throat before you do, I shall erase your name from the register of the angels.’ I descended swiftly until I turned the knife and flipped it in his hand, and I brought him the ransom. The third time: when Joseph (peace be upon him) was cast into the well, Allah Most High revealed to me: ‘O Gabriel, catch up with him. By My might and My majesty, if he reaches the bottom of the well before you do, I shall erase your name from the register of the angels.’ I descended swiftly, reached him into the open space, lifted him to the rock that was at the bottom of the well, and set him down upon it safely—so I was wearied. The well was a refuge of serpents and vipers; when they sensed him, each said to her companion: ‘Beware of moving, for a noble prophet has been brought down to us and has alighted in our courtyard.’ So none left her lair except the vipers, who came out intending to bite him; I shouted at them a shout that deafened their ears until the Day of Resurrection.”

Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb … from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: “Abraham (peace be upon him) awoke and saw a white hair in his beard. He said: ‘Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, Who has brought me to this point—I have not disobeyed Allah for the blink of an eye.’”

And from him: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm … from al-Ḥasan al-Ṣayqal, he said: I said to Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): We have been narrated from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the words of Joseph (peace be upon him): “O caravan! you are surely thieves.” [Yūsuf 12:70] (M. H. Shakir) He said: “By Allah, they did not steal, and he did not lie.” And Abraham (peace be upon him) said: “Nay! the chief of them did it, so ask them, if they speak.” [Al-Anbiyā’ 21:63] (M. H. Shakir) He said: “By Allah, they did not do it, and he did not lie.” He said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “What do you have to say about this, O Ṣayqal?” I said: We have nothing but submission. He said: “Allah loves two things and hates two things: He loves strutting between the two battle lines and He loves lying for reconciliation; and He hates strutting in the roads and He hates lying in other than reconciliation. Abraham (peace be upon him) only said: ‘Nay! the chief of them did it’ intending reconciliation and indicating that they do not [speak], and Joseph (peace be upon him) said it intending reconciliation.”

He said: “Abraham only said: ‘So ask them, if they speak.’ If they had spoken, then their chief did it; and if they did not speak, then their chief did nothing. They did not speak, and Abraham (peace be upon him) did not lie.”
