And you should carry his belongings for him, mount him, and help him rise until he rejoins the caravan; and through all of this you are firmly believing in loyalty to Muhammad and his pure Household. For Allah purifies and multiplies your deeds because of your loyalty to them and your disavowal of their enemies.

99-/542 _21- The Imam (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Then you turned back, except a few of you—O company of the Jews—from these covenants that were taken from you, just as they were taken from your forefathers, while you turn away from the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, which He has enjoined.”

The author of the book said: We have abridged this narration from the words of Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) in his Tafsir. It is a good hadith; so refer to it there.

Quran 2:84-86 (M. H. Shakir):

And when We made a covenant with you: you shall not shed your blood and you shall not turn your people out of your cities; then you promised and you bear witness. [2:84]

Yet you it is who slay your people and turn a party from among you out of their homes, backing each other up against them unlawfully and exceeding the limits; and if they should come to you as captives you would ransom them; while their very turning out was unlawful for you. Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? What then is the retribution of those among you who do this but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the day of resurrection they shall be sent back to the most grievous chastisement, and Allah is not at all heedless of what you do. [2:85]

Those are they who buy this world's life with the hereafter, so the chastisement shall not be lightened to them, nor shall they be helped. [2:86]

99-/543 _1- The Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “And when We took your covenant—remember, O Children of Israel—when We took your covenant from your forefathers, and upon everyone among their successors to whom the report of this reaches, of which you are a part: you shall not shed your blood—meaning none of you shall shed the blood of another—nor shall you expel yourselves from your dwellings—meaning none of you shall expel another from their homes.”

Then you acknowledged that covenant just as your forefathers acknowledged it, and you bound yourselves to it as they did, and you testify to this against your forefathers and yourselves. Yet you, O Jews, kill yourselves—some of you killing others—and you expel a group of your own from their homes by usurpation and coercion. You support one another against them; some of you aiding others in expelling those whom you expel from their dwellings, and in killing those among them whom you kill without right—in sin and aggression—cooperating and assisting one another in transgression.

And if they come to you—meaning those whom you expel, whom you aim to expel and to kill unjustly—if they come to you as captives, taken by your enemies and theirs, you ransom them from the enemy with your wealth, while their expulsion is forbidden to you. He, Mighty and Majestic, repeated “their expulsion” and did not suffice with merely saying “and it is forbidden to you,” because had He said only that, it might be thought that what is forbidden is only their ransoming.

Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: Do you then believe in a part of the Book—which is what has made ransoming obligatory upon you—and disbelieve in a part—which is what has forbidden killing them and expelling them? Thus He said: Since the Book has forbidden the killing of persons and expelling from homes just as it has enjoined the ransoming of captives, why is it that you obey in some matters and disobey in others, as though you were disbelieving in part and believing in part?! Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: What then is the recompense of those among you who do this, O company of the Jews, except disgrace—humiliation—in the life of this world, a jizya imposed upon him by which he is humbled; and on the Day of Resurrection they are returned to the severest punishment—of the category of the severest punishment—varying according to the variation of their sins. And Allah is not heedless of what you do—what these Jews do.

Then He described them, saying, Mighty and Majestic: Those are the ones who have purchased the life of this world in exchange for the Hereafter: they were content with the world and its chaff instead of the bliss of the Gardens, deserved through obedience to Allah. So the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be helped—no one will help them to lift the punishment from them.

So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), when this verse was revealed concerning the Jews—those Jews who broke the covenant of Allah, denied the messengers of Allah, and killed the friends of Allah—said: “Shall I not inform you who resembles them among the Jews of this Ummah?” They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah.

He said: “A people from my Ummah, who claim that they belong to my religion: they will kill the most eminent of my progeny and the purest of my stock [1]; they will alter my Shari‘ah and my Sunnah; and they will kill my two sons, al-Hasan and al-Husayn—just as the forefathers of these Jews killed Zakariyya and Yahya.”

Behold, Allah curses them just as He cursed them, and He will send against the remnants of their descendants before the Day of Resurrection a guiding, rightly guided one from the children of the wronged Husayn, who will drive them with the swords of his friends toward the Fire of Hell.

Behold, may Allah curse the killers of Husayn and those who love them and support them, and those who refrain from cursing them without any taqiyya that constrains them.

Behold, may Allah send His blessings upon those who weep for Husayn son of ‘Ali out of mercy and compassion, and upon those who curse their enemies and are filled with rage and indignation against them.

Behold, those who are pleased with the killing of Husayn are partners of his killers.

Behold, his killers, and their helpers, supporters, and those who follow their example, are dissociated from the religion of Allah.

Behold, Allah commands the angels brought near to transfer [1] the tears they pour out for the killing [2] of al-Husayn to the reservoirs in the Gardens; they mix them with the Water of Life, and thereby its sweetness and pleasantness are increased a thousandfold. And indeed, the angels receive the tears of those who rejoice and laugh at the killing of al-Husayn and cast them into the abyss; they mix them with its scalding water, its pus, its freezing cold and its filth, and thus their intense heat and grievous torment are increased a thousandfold—by which the punishment of those transferred to it among the enemies of the Family of Muhammad is intensified.

99-/544 _2- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Abī ‘Amr al-Zubayrī, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “Kufr in the Book of Allah is upon five aspects: among them is the kufr of dissociation—which is of two kinds—kufr of blessings, kufr by abandoning the command of Allah, and kufr regarding what we declare of Allah’s command—this is the kufr of sins [3]—and abandoning what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded. And that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: And when We made a covenant with you: you shall not shed your blood … to His saying: Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? So their kufr is in their abandoning what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded, and in their attribution to faith, which He did not accept from them nor did it benefit them with Him. So He said: What then is the recompense of those among you who do this but disgrace … to His saying: of what you do.”

99-/545 _3- And in the Tafsir of ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: that the verse was revealed concerning Abū Dharr and ‘Uthmān, with ‘Uthmān banishing him to al-Rabdha [4]. We have mentioned the narration in (Tafsīr al-Hādī).

Quran 2:87 (M. H. Shakir):

And most certainly We gave Moses the Book and We sent apostles after him one after another; and We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear arguments and strengthened him with the holy spirit. What! whenever then an apostle came to you with that which your souls did not desire, you were insolent so you called some liars and some you slew. [2:87]
