12. Special Grace of Imam Husain (a.s.) toward the Late Darbandi

The late Mulla Agha Darbandi — a jurist, usuli scholar, expert in rijal (narrator studies), a careful researcher, contemporary of Shaykh Ansari and a student of Sharif al-Ulama Mazandarani — resided for a long time in Karbala. Later he came to Iran and stayed for a period in Tehran, where he eventually passed away.

His body was placed in a coffin for safekeeping so it could dry out, as was the custom. After six months, when they opened the coffin, they found his body still fresh and intact. Thus, they transferred him to Karbala and buried him in the cemetery where the authors of al-Riyadh and al-Fusul were also interred.

The late Darbandi was a passionate lover and ardent devotee of Sayyid al-Shuhada (a.s.) and put forth great effort to revive the traditions of mourning for him, even writing several volumes of Maqtal (books describing the martyrdom of Imam Husain).

Ayatullah Haj Mirza Abd al-Hamid Sharbiyani, resident of holy Mashhad, narrates from his grandfather Ayatullah Fazil Sharbiyani that one of the seminary students of Najaf saw in a dream a magnificent palace whose glory dazzled his eyes and left his mind stunned. He asked:

“Whose palace is this?”

They answered:

“This is Shaykh Murtada Ansari’s.”

Then he saw an even more splendid and grand palace and asked:

“Whose palace is this?”

They answered:

“This is Mulla Agha Darbandi’s.”

He wondered:

“But Shaykh Ansari’s rank is higher than his — so how can Darbandi’s palace be more magnificent?”

They replied:

“This privilege is due to the special grace and blessings of Imam Husain (a.s.), because Darbandi spent his entire life in love and devotion to Imam Husain (a.s.), and every day in his classes he would mention the tragedy of the Imam, and at every time and place he would remember him.”
