His children were born and multiplied, then Allah sent him back (to life) and revived him in the very birthplace where He had caused him to die; so his children were older than their father.

99-/1440 -5- Al-Tabrisi in Al-Ihtijaj: In a narration from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), a heretic asked him: If Allah were to return to us one of the dead every hundred years so that we could ask him about those from among us who have passed—what they became, how their condition is, and what they encountered after death, and what was done with them—people would act upon certainty, doubt would vanish, and rancor would leave the hearts.
He (peace be upon him) said: This is the statement of one who denies the messengers and belies them, and who does not believe in what they brought from Allah, for they informed and said that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has informed in His Book upon the tongues of the prophets (peace be upon them) about the state of those from us who have died. Can anyone be truer in speech than Allah and His messengers? And many who had died have returned to this world: among them are the Companions of the Cave—Allah caused them to die for three hundred and nine years, then raised them in the time of a people who denied resurrection, to invalidate their argument, to show them His power, and so they might know that resurrection is true.
And Allah caused the prophet Irmiya (Jeremiah), peace be upon him—who looked upon the desolation of Bayt al-Maqdis and what was around it when Bukhtunassar (Nebuchadnezzar) invaded them—to die. He said: How will Allah give life to this after its death? So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then revived him, and he looked at his limbs, how they knit together and were clothed with flesh, and at his joints and veins, how they were connected. When he stood upright, he said: I know that Allah has power over all things.
99-/1441 -6- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi said: The one who passed by the town was ‘Uzayr. He said: And this is narrated from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him).
And it is said: it was Irmiya (Jeremiah). And this is narrated from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him).
99-/1442 -7- From him: And it is narrated from ‘Ali (peace be upon him): ‘Uzayr left his family while his wife was pregnant, and he was fifty years old. Allah then caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him, and he returned to his family as a fifty-year-old man while he had a son who was a hundred years old; thus his son was older than him. That is among the signs of Allah.

99-/1443 -8- I say: Sa‘d b. ‘Abd Allah al-Qummi narrated in Basā’ir al-Darajāt from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): The verse concerns ‘Uzayr and ‘Azrah.

Quran 2:260 (M. H. Shakir): And when Ibrahim said: My Lord! show me how Thou givest life to the dead. He said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease. He said: Then take four of the birds, then cut them into pieces, then place on every mountain a part of them, then call them; they will come to you flying; and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.

99-/1444 -1- Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Imran al-Daqqaq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Hamza b. al-Qasim al-‘Alawi al-‘Abbasi narrated to us, who said: Ja‘far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Kufi al-Fazari narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Zayd al-Zayyat narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi, from al-Mufaddal b. ‘Umar, from al-Sadiq Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him), said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, answered the prayer of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he said: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. This is an ambiguous verse, and its meaning is that he asked about the manner (kayfiyya); and the manner is among the acts of Allah, Mighty and Majestic—when a knower does not know it, no defect befalls him, nor does any deficiency arise in his monotheism. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes—this is a general condition: whoever believes, when any one of them is asked, “Do you not believe?” it is necessary for him to say, “Yes,” just as Ibrahim said. And when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to all the souls of the children of Adam: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes (Quran 7:172), the first who said “Yes” was Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family); by preceding to “Yes” he became the master of the first and the last, and the most excellent of the prophets and messengers. Whoever does not answer this question with the answer of Ibrahim has turned away from his creed; Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And who forsakes the religion of Ibrahim but he who debases himself (Quran 2:130). Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, chose him in this world.

99-/1445 -2- From him: Tamim b. ‘Abd Allah b. Tamim al-Qurashi said: My father narrated to me, from Hamdan b. Sulayman al-Naysaburi, from ‘Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Jahm, who said: I attended the session of al-Ma’mun while al-Rida ‘Ali b. Musa (peace be upon him) was with him. Al-Ma’mun said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it not your position that the prophets are infallible? He said: Yes. He then asked him about verses of the Quran, and among what he asked him was: Inform me about the saying of Allah: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. He said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease. Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, had revealed to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): I am taking from among My servants a friend (khalil); if he asks Me to give life to the dead, I will answer him. It occurred to the soul of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) that he was that khalil, so he said: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. He said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease regarding the friendship. He said: Then take four of the birds, then cut them into pieces, then place on every mountain a part of them, then call them; they will come to you flying; and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise. So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) took an eagle, a duck, a peacock, and a rooster. He cut them up and mixed them, then placed on each of the mountains around him—and they were ten—a portion of them, and he held their beaks between his fingers. Then he called them by their names and placed grain and water near him. Those pieces flew together, some to others, until the bodies were complete, and each body came until it joined to its neck and head. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) then released their beaks, and they flew, then alighted and drank from that water and picked from that grain, and said: O Prophet of Allah, you have given us life—may Allah give you life. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: Rather, Allah gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. Al-Ma’mun said: May Allah bless you, O Abu al-Hasan.

99-/1446 -3- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Abu Ayyub, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) looked at a carcass on the seashore being eaten by the beasts of the land and the beasts of the sea; then the beasts pounced upon one another and ate each other. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) marveled and said: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. Allah, Exalted, said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease. He said: Then take four of the birds, then cut them into pieces, then place on every mountain a part of them, then call them; they will come to you flying; and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise. So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) took the peacock, the rooster, the pigeon, and the crow. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Then cut them into pieces; then mix their flesh and distribute them over ten mountains; then take their beaks and call them—they will come to you flying. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did that and distributed them over ten mountains, then called them, saying: Answer me by Allah’s permission. The flesh of each and its bones gathered and joined to its head, and they flew to Ibrahim (peace be upon him). At that, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is Mighty, Wise.

He (peace be upon him) wrote to him: Ibrahim was a believer and wished to increase in faith; but you are a doubter, and the doubter—there is no good in him. And he wrote to him: Doubt is only until certainty comes; when certainty comes, doubt is no longer permissible. And he wrote: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: We did not find in most of them any (keeping of) covenant, and indeed We found most of them to be transgressors (Quran 7:102)—he said: it was revealed about the doubter.

99-/1450 -7- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Ibrahim (peace be upon him): My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was shown the dominion of the heavens and the earth, he saw a man committing fornication and invoked against him, and he died. Then he saw another and invoked against him, and he died, until he saw three and invoked against them, and they died. Allah revealed to him: O Ibrahim, your supplication is answered; so do not supplicate against My servants. If I had willed, I would not have created them. I created My creation in three kinds: a servant who worships Me and does not associate anything with Me, and I reward him; a servant who worships other than Me—he will not escape Me; and a servant who worships other than Me, but I will bring forth from his loins one who will worship Me. Then he turned and saw a carcass on a shore, part of it in the water and part on land. The beasts of the sea would come and eat what was in the water and then return and set upon one another and eat each other; and the beasts of the land would come and eat from it, then set upon one another and eat each other. He marveled at what he saw and said: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. He said: How do You bring forth what has been inter-transferred!—these are nations that have eaten one another. He said: What! and do you not believe? He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease—meaning, until I see this just as Allah has shown me all things. He said: Then take four of the birds and cut them and mix them, just as I have mixed this carcass among these beasts that have eaten one another; then place on every mountain a part of them, then call them; they will come to you flying. When he called them, they answered him, and the mountains were ten.
99-/1451 -8- And Abu Basir narrated from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: The mountains were ten, and the birds were the rooster, the pigeon, the peacock, and the crow. He said: Then take four of the birds and cut them into pieces—their flesh, bones, and feathers—then hold their heads, then distribute them over ten mountains, a part of them on every mountain. What was on this mountain would go to that mountain with its feathers, flesh, and blood, then come until it placed its head in its neck, until he finished with all four of them.

99-/1452 -9- From Ma‘ruf b. Kharrabudh, who said: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: When Allah revealed to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): Take four of the birds, Ibrahim took the ostrich, the peacock, the goose, and the rooster. He plucked their feathers after slaughtering them, then gathered them in a mortar and crushed them, then distributed them over the mountains of the Jordan, which were then ten mountains. He placed on each mountain a part of them, then called them by their names, and they came to him swiftly. At that Ibrahim said: I know that Allah has power over all things.

99-/1453 -10- From ‘Ali b. Asbat: Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (peace be upon him) was asked about Allah’s saying: He said: Yes, but that my heart may be at ease—was there doubt in his heart? He said: No; rather, he sought from Allah an increase in his certainty. He said: And a “portion” (al-juz’) is one out of ten.

99-/1454 -11- From ‘Abd al-Samad b. Bashir, who said: Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur assembled the judges and said to them: A man bequeathed a “portion” (juz’) of his wealth—how much is the portion? They did not know how much the portion was and complained to him about it. So he dispatched a courier to the governor of al-Madina to ask Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him): A man bequeathed a portion of his wealth—how much is the portion? This has been problematic for the judges, and they do not know how much it is. If he informs you, then fine; otherwise, put him on the courier and send him to me. The governor came to Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) and said to him: Abu Ja‘far sent to me that I should ask you about a man who bequeathed a portion of his wealth. He asked the judges under him and they did not inform him what it was, and he has written to me that if you explain it for him, then fine, otherwise I will place you on the courier to him. Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: This is clear in the Book of Allah. When Ibrahim said: My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead … to His saying: Then place on every mountain a part of them—the birds were four and the mountains were ten. So a man gives out one portion from every ten portions. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) called for a mortar and pounded all the birds in it and kept the heads with him. Then he called as he had been commanded, and he watched the feathers as they emerged, and the veins—vein by vein—until its wing was complete and even. It headed toward Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and Ibrahim took one of the heads and faced it with that body, but the head he faced it with was not for that body until another head moved to it and matched the body. Then the number was complete and the bodies complete.

99-/1455 -12- From ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Sayabah, who said: A woman made a bequest to me, saying: Use my third to pay my nephew’s debt, and a portion of it is for so-and-so. I asked Ibn Abi Layla about that, and he said: I do not see that she has anything, and I do not know what the portion is. I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) and informed him how the woman had said it and what Ibn Abi Layla had said. He said: Ibn Abi Layla has lied; she has a tenth of the third. Allah commanded Ibrahim (peace be upon him), saying: Place on every mountain a part of them; and the mountains then were ten—and that is a tenth of the thing.

99-/1456 -13- From Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), regarding a man who bequeathed a portion of his wealth. He said: A portion is one out of ten—the mountains were ten, and the birds were the peacock, the pigeon, the rooster, and the hoopoe. Allah commanded him to cut them into pieces and to place on every mountain a part of them, and to take the head of each bird in his hand. He said: When he took the head of a bird in his hand, what belonged to it would fly to him until it returned as it had been.

99-/1457 -14- From Muhammad b. Isma‘il, from ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Abd Allah, who said: Abu Ja‘far b. Sulayman al-Khurasani came to me and said: A man from Khurasan among the pilgrims stayed with me, and we discussed hadith. He said: A brother of ours died in Marw and bequeathed to me one hundred thousand dirhams, and he ordered me to give Abu Hanifa a portion of it. I did not know how much the portion was of what he left. When I arrived in Kufa, I went to Abu Hanifa and asked him about the portion, and he said to me: A quarter. My heart refused that, and I said: I will not do it until I perform Hajj and thoroughly investigate the matter. When I saw the people of Kufa unanimous on the quarter, I said to Abu Hanifa: There is no harm in that—it was to you that he bequeathed it, O Abu Hanifa; but I will perform Hajj and investigate the matter. Abu Hanifa said: And I intend Hajj as well. When we came to Mecca and were in tawaf, we saw an elderly man sitting who had finished his tawaf, supplicating and glorifying. Abu Hanifa turned, and when he saw him he said: If you want to ask the furthest (most knowledgeable) of the people, ask this one; there is none after him. I said: Who is this? He said: Ja‘far b. Muhammad. When I sat and was in position, Abu Hanifa circled to sit behind Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him) near me, greeted him, and magnified him. Others came also, approaching and greeting him, and they sat. When I saw their reverence for him, my back was strengthened. Abu Hanifa nudged me to speak. I said: May I be your ransom, I am a man from Khurasan. A man died and bequeathed to me one hundred thousand dirhams and ordered me to give from it a portion, and he named the man for me. How much is the portion, may I be your ransom? Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon them) said: O Abu Hanifa, it was to you he bequeathed it—speak regarding it. He said: A quarter. He said to Ibn Abi Layla: Speak regarding it. He said: A quarter. Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: From where did you say a quarter? He said: Because of Allah’s saying: Then take four of the birds … then place on every mountain a part of them. Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said to them—and I was listening: I know that the birds were four; but how many were the mountains? The portions are for the mountains, not for the birds. They said: We assumed they were four. Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: Rather, the mountains were ten.
99-/1458 -15- From Salih b. Sahl al-Hamdani, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) regarding His saying: Then take four of the birds … then place on every mountain a part of them. He said: He took the hoopoe, the shrike, the peacock, and the crow; he slaughtered them and set aside their heads, then pounded their bodies in a mortar with their feathers, flesh, and bones until they were mixed. Then he divided them into ten parts over ten mountains, then placed grain and water near him, then held their beaks between his fingers and said: Come to me swiftly by Allah’s permission. The flesh, feathers, and bones flew to one another until the bodies were restored as they had been. Each body came until it clung to its neck in which was the beak. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) then let go of their beaks, and they rose and drank from that water and picked from that grain. Then they said: O Prophet of Allah, you have given us life—may Allah give you life. He said: Rather, Allah gives life and causes death. This is its exoteric interpretation; as for its esoteric interpretation in the Quran, he said: Take four of those who can bear speech, entrust them with your knowledge, then send them to the ends of the earth as proofs for you over the people. When you want them to come to you, call them by the Greatest Name; they will come to you swiftly by Allah’s permission.
Quran 2:261 (M. H. Shakir): The parable of those who spend their goods in the way of Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears (with) a hundred grains in every ear; and Allah multiplies for whom He pleases; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.
