11/2 - Chapter on What Has Been Narrated Regarding the Magic That Was Used to Bewitch the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), What Nullifies Magic, and the Virtues of the Two Protection Surahs (Al-Mu'awwidhatayn)

99-/12060 Al-Husayn ibn Bistam, in the book Tibb al-A’immah (Peace be upon them): From Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Bursi, who said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Armani narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Sinan narrated to us, who said: al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar narrated to us, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: ‘Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and said: O Muhammad, the Jewish man so-and-so has bewitched you and placed the magic in the well of such-and-such a clan. So send the most trustworthy person to you, the one with the highest standing in your eyes, and the one who is the equivalent of your own soul, until he brings you the magic.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) then sent Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and said: ‘Go to the well of Dharwan, for in it is the magic with which Labeed ibn al-A’sam the Jew has bewitched me. Bring it to me.’ Ali (peace be upon him) said: ‘I set out on the errand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and when I descended into the well, the water had become like henna water because of the magic. I searched for it quickly until I reached the bottom of the pit, but I did not find it. Those with me said: ‘There is nothing in it, so come up.’ I replied: ‘By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been deceived, and my certainty about it is no less than your certainty.’”

99-/12060 (Continued) Meaning, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Then I searched gently and retrieved a container. I brought it to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and he said: 'Open it.' When I opened it, inside the container was a piece of the core of a date palm, and within it was a string with twenty-one knots. On that day, Jibril (peace be upon him) had revealed the Mu'awwidhatayn (the two protection surahs) to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'O Ali, recite them over the knots.' So, whenever Ali (peace be upon him) recited a verse, a knot was undone, until he had finished. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then removed the magic from His Prophet and healed him."
And it is narrated that Jibril and Mikail (peace be upon them) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) while he was ill. One of them sat on his right and the other on his left. Jibril asked Mikail: "What is the cause of the man's illness?" Mikail replied: "He has been bewitched." Jibril then asked: "Who bewitched him?" Mikail replied: "Labeed ibn al-A'sam the Jew." Then the narration continues as mentioned previously.
99-/12061 And from him: Ibrahim ibn al-Baytar narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Isa narrated to us, from Yunus ibn Abd al-Rahman, who is called Yunus al-Musalli due to his frequent prayers, from Ibn Muskan, from Zurara, who said: Abu Ja'far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, magic is not directed at anything except the eye.”
99-/12062 And from Abu Abdullah al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), he was asked about the Mu'awwidhatayn (the two protection surahs), "Are they from the Qur'an?" He said: "Yes, they are from the Qur'an." The man then said: "They are not in the Qur'an according to the reading of Ibn Mas'ud nor in his Mushaf." Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) replied: "Ibn Mas'ud was mistaken—or he lied—these two surahs are from the Qur'an." The man asked: "Should I recite them, O son of the Messenger of Allah, in the written text?" He said: "Yes, and do you know the meaning of the two protection surahs, and in what context they were revealed? Verily, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was bewitched by Labeed ibn al-A'sam, the Jew." Abu Basir then asked Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him): "What was the nature of this, and how far could his magic reach?" Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) replied: "Indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) would think that he was having relations when he was not, and he would want to open the door but could not see it until he touched it with his hand. Magic is real, and it is only directed at the eye and the private part. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came and informed him of this, and he called Ali (peace be upon him) and sent him to retrieve the magic from the well of Dharwan." The narration continues as mentioned earlier.
99-/12063 And from the Khawas al-Qur'an (Special Benefits of the Qur'an): It is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) that he said: "Whoever recites Surah al-Falaq every night before sleeping, Allah will grant them the reward equivalent to that of one who performs Hajj, Umrah, and fasts. It is a beneficial remedy and a protection from every evil eye that gazes with harm."

99-/12064 And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Whoever recites it before sleeping will have a great reward, and it is a protection from all harm. It is a beneficial remedy and a safeguard from every evil eye that gazes with malice."
99-/12065 And al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever recites it every night during the nights of the month of Ramadan, whether in an optional or obligatory prayer, it will be as if they fasted in Makkah, and they will receive the reward of one who performed Hajj and Umrah with the permission of Allah, the Exalted."
99-/12066 Al-Husayn ibn Bistam in Tibb al-A'immah (Peace be upon them): From Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: This incantation, which Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) taught us, mentions that it is an inheritance and that it nullifies magic. It is written on paper and hung on the one who has been bewitched: Musa said: What you have brought is magic. Indeed, Allah will invalidate it. Indeed, Allah does not amend the deeds of the corrupters. And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even though the criminals may dislike it. Are you more difficult to create, or the heaven? He built it, raised its height, and perfected it. The truth was established, and what they had done was nullified. So they were defeated there and turned back in disgrace. And the magicians were thrown down in prostration. They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Musa and Harun. [1][2][3]
99-/12067 Abu Ali al-Tabarsi in Majma' al-Bayan: The reason for the revelation: It is said that Labeed ibn al-A'sam, the Jew, bewitched the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and then hid the magic in the well of Bani Zuraiq. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) became ill, and while he was asleep, two angels came to him. One sat by his head, and the other sat by his feet. They informed him of the matter, and that it was in the well of Dharwan, under a date-palm stalk, beneath a stone at the bottom of the well. The stalk is the outer skin of the date flower, and the stone is a rock at the bottom of the well where the water rests.
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) woke up and sent Ali (peace be upon him), al-Zubayr, and Ammar to draw the water from the well. They lifted the stone and removed the date-palm stalk. Inside, they found some hair from the comb, a few of its teeth, and a knot with eleven knots, each secured with a needle. Then, these two surahs (al-Falaq and an-Nas) were revealed, and as the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) recited each verse, a knot was undone. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) felt lightness and stood up as if he had been released from a bind. Jibril (peace be upon him) kept saying: "In the name of Allah, I protect you from everything that harms you, from the envious and the evil eye. Allah, the Exalted, will cure you."
Then al-Tabarsi said: And they narrated this from Aisha and Ibn Abbas. He then added: "But this is not permissible, for one who is described as being bewitched is as if their intellect has been disturbed, and Allah, the Almighty, has refuted this in His saying: And the wrongdoers said: 'You are only following a man bewitched.' (Qur'an, Surah al-Isra, 17:47)."

Look how they have struck for you comparisons, but they have gone astray. (Qur'an, Surah al-Isra, 17:47)
It can be understood that the Jewish man, or his daughters, as narrated, exerted great effort in this matter, but they were unable to carry it out. Allah then revealed to His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) what they had done to deceive him, and He enabled him to extract the magic. This was a sign of the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) truthfulness. How could it be possible that the illness was caused by their actions? Even if they had the power to do so, they would have killed him and many of the believers due to their intense enmity towards him.
