Al-Hijr Ayah 47

[Al-Hijr 15:47] — M. H. Shakir: And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their breasts—(they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face.

English translation:

We have spread it out, and indeed our cushion is of leather stuffed with fiber.” The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “O Salman, my daughter is among the foremost racers.” Then she said: “O my father—may I be your ransom—what is it that made you weep?” He told her what Gabriel (peace be upon him) had brought down to him of the two foregoing verses. Fatimah (peace be upon her) fell on her face saying: “Woe, then woe to the one who enters the Fire!” Salman heard and said: “If only I were a ram for my family; they would eat my meat and tear my skin, and I would not have heard mention of the Fire.” Abu Dharr said: “If only my mother had been barren and had not borne me, and I had not heard mention of the Fire.” Ammar said: “If only I were a bird flying in the wastes, and there were no reckoning or punishment upon me, and I had not heard mention of the Fire.” And Ali (peace be upon him) said: “If only the beasts had torn my flesh, and if only my mother had not borne me, and I had not heard mention of the Fire.” Then Ali (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his head, wept, and said: “Ah, the length of the journey! Ah, the paucity of provision! They go on the journey of the Resurrection; in the Fire they wander; with the hooks of the Fire they are snatched. Sick ones whose ailing is not visited, wounded ones whose wounds are not treated, captives whose captivity is not loosed. From the Fire they eat, and from it they drink, and between its layers they turn about. After wearing cotton and linen, they wear the cut garments of the fires; after embracing their spouses, they are yoked with the devils.”

99-/5889) Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from several of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Muhammad ibn Sulayman, from his father, said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when Abu Basir entered upon him—and he mentioned a hadith—he said to him: “O Abu Muhammad, Allah has indeed mentioned you in His Book, saying: ‘(They shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’ [Al-Hijr 15:47 — Shakir]. By Allah, He intended none by this other than you.” And Ibn Babawayh narrated it in his book Fada’il al-Shi‘ah.

99-/5890) And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Amr ibn Abi al-Miqdam, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “I went out, my father and I, until when we were between the grave and the pulpit, there were some people from the Shi‘a; he greeted them,

English translation:

then said: “By Allah, I do love your scents and your souls; so help me toward that by piety and striving. And know that our wilayah is attained only through piety and striving. Whoever among you takes an imam from among the servants, let him act by his deed. You are Allah’s Shi‘a; you are Allah’s helpers; you are the foremost—the first and the last; the foremost in this world and the foremost in the Hereafter to Paradise. We have guaranteed Paradise for you by the guarantee of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the guarantee of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family).

By Allah, there are not more souls upon the degrees of Paradise than yours; so compete for the virtues of the degrees. You are the goodly ones, and your women are the goodly ones. Every believing woman is wide-eyed houra’, and every believer is siddiq. Indeed, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to Qanbar: ‘O Qanbar, rejoice, give glad tidings, and be gladdened; for by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) died while he was displeased with his community—except the Shi‘a.’

Lo! Everything has a might, and the might of Islam is the Shi‘a. Lo! Everything has a support, and the support of Islam is the Shi‘a. Lo! Everything has a summit, and the summit of Islam is the Shi‘a. Lo! Everything has a nobility, and the nobility of Islam is the Shi‘a. Lo! Everything has a master, and the master of gatherings is the gathering of the Shi‘a. Lo! Everything has an imam, and the imam of the earth is a land inhabited by the Shi‘a. By Allah, were it not for what of you is in the earth, no eye would ever see herbage. By Allah, were it not for what of you is in the earth, Allah would not bestow favor upon the people of your opposition, nor would they obtain good things. They have no share in this world nor in the Hereafter. Every nasibi, even if he worships and strives, falls under this verse: ‘Laboring, toiling; entering a hot fire’ [Al-Ghashiyah 88:3-4 — Shakir: Laboring, toiling; Entering into burning fire]. So every striving nasibi—his work is dust. Our Shi‘a speak by the light of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, while those who oppose them speak with instability.

By Allah, no servant from our Shi‘a sleeps but that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, raises his soul to heaven and blesses it; if its term has come, He places it in treasuries of His mercy, in the meadows of His Garden, and in the shade of His Throne. And if its term is later, He sends it back with His trusted angels to return it to the body from which it departed, to rest therein. By Allah, your pilgrims and ‘umrah performers are the intimates of Allah, Mighty and Majestic; your poor are the people of wealth; your rich are the people of contentment; and all of you are the people of His call and the people of His answer.”

Everything has an essence, and the essence of the children of Adam is Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and we, and our Shi‘a after us. How excellent are our Shi‘a—how near they are to the Throne of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and how beautiful is Allah’s treatment of them on the Day of Resurrection.

By Allah—were it not that people would deem it great or vanity would enter them, the angels would greet them face to face. By Allah, no servant from our Shi‘a recites the Qur’an in his prayer standing but that for every letter he has a hundred good deeds; nor does he recite in his prayer sitting but that for every letter he has fifty good deeds; nor outside of prayer but that for every letter he has ten good deeds. And the silent one from our Shi‘a has the reward of one who recites the Qur’an among those who oppose him. By Allah, while you are asleep on your beds, you have the reward of the fighters in the path of Allah; and by Allah, in your prayers you have the reward of those aligned in His path. And by Allah, you are those whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their breasts—(they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’ [Al-Hijr 15:47 — Shakir]. Our Shi‘a are the people of four eyes—two in the head and two in the heart. Lo! All creatures are thus, except that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, opened your sights and blinded their sights.”

99-/5895) And from the route of the opponents: what Abu Nu‘aym the hafiz transmitted, from his men, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said: “O Messenger of Allah, which is more beloved to you, me or Fatimah?” He said: “Fatimah is more beloved to me than you, and you are more precious to me than her. And it is as if I see you at my Pond driving people away from it; upon it are ewers as numerous as the stars of the sky. And indeed I, you, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, Hamzah, and Ja‘far are in Paradise: ‘(they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’—and you are with me, and your Shi‘a.” Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) recited: ‘And We will root out whatever of rancor is in their breasts—(they shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’ [Al-Hijr 15:47 — Shakir], “None of you will be looking at the nape of his companion.”

99-/5896) Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad, raising it to Zayd ibn Abi Awfa, said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) in his mosque. He mentioned the story of the Messenger of Allah making brotherhood between his companions. Ali (peace be upon him) said to him—meaning the Messenger of Allah: “My soul has departed and my back has broken when I saw you do for your companions what you did, except me. If this is out of anger toward me, then to you is apology and honor.” The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “By He who sent me with the truth as a prophet, I left you for myself. You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me; and you are my brother and my heir.” He said: “And what do I inherit from you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “What the prophets before me bequeathed.” He said: “What did the prophets before you bequeath?” He said: “The Book of Allah and the sunnah of their prophet. And you are with me in my pavilion in Paradise with my daughter Fatimah; you are my brother and my companion.” Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) recited: ‘(They shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’ [Al-Hijr 15:47 — Shakir], “Those who love each other in Allah will look at one another.”

99-/5897) Ibn al-Maghazili al-Shafi‘i in al-Manaqib, raising it to Zayd ibn Arqam, said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). He said: “I am making brotherhood between you just as Allah made brotherhood between the angels.” Then he said to Ali: “You are my brother and my companion.” Then he recited this verse: ‘(They shall be) as brethren, on raised couches, face to face’ [Al-Hijr 15:47 — Shakir], “Friends in Allah will look at one another.”

[Al-Hijr 15:48-72] — M. H. Shakir (selected verses cited):

15:48 “Fatigue shall not touch them therein, nor shall they ever be ejected from it.”

15:72 “By your life! they were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.”

99-/5898) ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: His saying, “Fatigue (nasab) shall not touch them therein”—that is, toil and hardship. His saying, “Inform My servants”—that is, tell them that I am the most Forgiving, the most Merciful; and that My punishment is the painful punishment; and inform them about the guests of Ibrahim. We have written their account in Surat Hud, and we add here from the route of al-‘Ayyashi.

99-/5899) ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: And His saying, “And We conveyed to him that matter”—that is, We informed him that the last remnant of these (meaning the people of Lot) would be cut off in the morning. And His saying, “By your life”—that is, by your life, O Muhammad—“surely they were wandering blindly in their intoxication.” This is a virtue for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) over the prophets.

99-/5900) Al-‘Ayyashi: from Muhammad ibn al-Qasim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Sarah said to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): ‘You have grown old; if only you would pray to Allah to grant you a child so that our eyes may be cooled. For Allah has taken you as an intimate friend, and He answers your supplication, if Allah wills.’ So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked his Lord to grant him a learned boy. Allah revealed to him: ‘I am granting you a forbearing boy; then I will test you regarding him with obedience to Me.’” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Ibrahim remained after the glad tidings three years; then the glad tidings came to him from Allah of Isma‘il once again after three years.”
