The Elegy Recitation of Umm Salamah Outside Madinah

The Elegy Recitation of Umm Salamah Outside Madinah

The thirteenth gathering was that of Umm Salamah outside Madinah when Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) resolved to depart.

She came to him and said:

“O my son, do not grieve me by your journey to Iraq, for I heard your grandfather say:

‘My son Imam Husain (a.s.) will be killed in Iraq in a land called Karbalāʾ.’”

The Imām replied:

“O my mother, I also know this. I will certainly be killed, and there is no way to avoid it. I know the day of my martyrdom, I know my killer, I know my place of burial, and I know those from my family and companions who will be martyred with me.

And if you wish, O mother, I can show you that place.”

Then he pointed, and the lands were unfolded before her. Karbalāʾ became visible, and he showed her the place of his burial, the encampment, and the place of martyrdom.

Umm Salamah wept intensely and submitted herself to the decree of Allah.

Then the Imām said:

“O mother, Allah has willed to see me slain, and to see my family taken captive, scattered, and driven from place to place. He has willed to see my children slaughtered, oppressed, captured, and overpowered, calling for help while no one comes to assist them.”

In another narration, Umm Salamah said:

“Your grandfather gave me some soil which I have preserved in a bottle.”

The Imām replied:

“By Allah, I shall certainly be killed, even if I do not go to Iraq.”

Then he took some soil and gave it to her and said:

“Place this also in a bottle. When you see it turn into blood, just like the soil my grandfather gave you, then know that I have been martyred.” [653]

The fourteenth gathering was that of the aunts of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) outside Madinah.

They came to him and began lamenting and mourning.

The Imām said:

“I adjure you by Allah not to spread this matter publicly, for that would be disobedience to Allah.”

They replied:

“Then for what day should we reserve our mourning and weeping?

Today is like the day on which the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), ʿAlī (a.s.), Fāṭimah (a.s.), Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthūm, and Zaynab departed from this world.

We implore you by Allah not to give yourself over to death.”

One of his aunts said:

“I heard the jinn lamenting and mourning over you.” [654]

The fifteenth gathering was that of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) when he departed from Madinah.

Several groups of angels carrying spears came to him, greeted him, and said:

“O Proof of Allah over His creation after your grandfather, your father, and your brother. Allah granted victory to your grandfather on many occasions, and now we have come to assist you.”

The Imām replied:

“The appointed meeting between you and me is the land of my martyrdom. When I arrive there, come to me.”

They said:

“O Proof of Allah, command us with whatever you wish, for we are obedient and submissive. If you fear your enemies, we shall accompany you.”

The Imām replied:

“They have no power over me and cannot harm me until I reach the place appointed for me.” [655]

The sixteenth gathering was also after his departure from Madinah.

Several groups of believing jinn came to him and said:

“O our master, we are your Shīʿah and your helpers. Command us as you wish. If you order us to destroy your enemies, we shall do so.”

The Imām replied:

“May Allah reward you with goodness.

Have you not read the Qur'an revealed to my grandfather in which Allah says:

‘Wherever you are, death will overtake you, though you are in lofty towers.’ (Qur'an 4:78, M. H. Shakir) [656]

And He also says:

‘And if you had remained in your houses, those for whom slaughter was ordained would certainly have gone forth to the places where they were to lie down.’ (Qur'an 3:154, M. H. Shakir) [657]

If I were to remain here, then how would these wretched people be tested? And who would be buried in my grave at Karbalāʾ?

Allah chose that place for me from the day the earth was spread out, and made it a place of safety for my Shīʿah in this world and the next.

However, come to me on Saturday, the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, for I shall be martyred at the end of that day. None of my household will remain except that they will be killed, and my head will be carried to Yazīd.”

The jinn said:

“O beloved of Allah and son of the beloved of Allah! Were it not for our obedience to your command, we would destroy all your enemies before they could reach you.”

The Imām replied:

“By Allah, our power over them is greater than yours. However, the proof of Allah must be completed against this people.” [658]

The seventeenth gathering was in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. The reciter of the elegy was Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.), and the listeners were the pilgrims.

This was when he had resolved to travel to Iraq. He stood and delivered a sermon, the meaning of which is as follows:

“Praise and glorification belong exclusively to Allah. The reins of all affairs are tied to His will and power. Blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and his family.

Death has been prescribed for the children of Adam just as a necklace is fixed around the neck of a young woman.

How greatly I long to meet my predecessors, just as Yaʿqūb longed for Yūsuf.

A place of martyrdom has been chosen for me, and I shall certainly meet it.

It is as though I see my limbs and body being torn apart by the wolves of the desert between Nawāwīs and Karbalāʾ, filling their empty stomachs and hungry bellies with my flesh.

There is no escape from a day that has already been written in the knowledge of Allah.

We, the Ahl al-Bayt, are pleased with the decree of Allah and are patient upon His trials. He will grant us the reward of the patient.

The family of the Messenger of Allah will never be separated from him. Rather, they will be gathered with him in Paradise. His eyes will be delighted by them, and the promises made concerning them will be fulfilled.

Therefore, whoever is ready to sacrifice his life in the path of Allah and has prepared his heart to meet Allah should accompany us, for I shall depart in the morning, if Allah wills.” [659]

The eighteenth gathering took place outside Makkah.

On the night of the Imām's departure from Makkah, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah came to him and said:

“My brother, you know that the people of Kūfah betrayed your father and your brother. I fear that they will also betray you.

In my opinion, it would be better for you to remain here in Makkah, for this is a place of safety and no one will be able to harm you.”

The Imām replied:

“My brother, I fear that Yazīd may kill me here through treachery, and thus the sanctity of the Sacred Sanctuary of Allah would be violated.”

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah said:

“Then go to Yemen or to the desert regions, where no one will have the power to harm you.”

The Imām replied:

“I shall reflect upon this suggestion.”

When dawn arrived, the Imām ordered preparations for departure and set out on his journey.

When Muḥammad learned of this, he came, took hold of the reins of the camel, and said:

“My brother, did you not promise that you would reflect upon the matter? Why then have you departed so quickly?”

The Imām replied:

“After you left, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) came to me and said:

‘O Imam Husain (a.s.), depart, for Allah desires to see you martyred.’”

Muḥammad said:

“Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return.” (Qur'an 2:156, M. H. Shakir) [660]

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah then said:

“Why are you taking all these women with you when you are going toward martyrdom?”

The Imām replied:

“My grandfather said to me:

‘Take them with you, for Allah desires to see them as captives.’”

Then Muḥammad bade him farewell and returned. [661]

The translator says:

Allah's pleasure with the martyrdom of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) and the captivity of his family does not imply His pleasure with those who killed him and took his family captive. Explaining this to ordinary people is difficult.

By way of example, it is well known that the mother of Wahb said to her son:

“I will not be pleased with you until you are martyred in the company of the son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).”

Yet she was not pleased with the action of his killer.

The nineteenth gathering was another gathering outside Makkah.

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās and ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr came to the Imām and urged him to remain where he was.

The Imām replied:

“My grandfather has commanded me, and I shall go.”

Ibn ʿAbbās departed saying:

“Alas for Imam Husain (a.s.)!”

Then ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar came to the Imām and said:

“Make peace with these misguided people and do not fight them, for you will be killed.”

The Imām replied:

“Do you not know that among the signs of the worthlessness of this world is that the head of Yaḥyā (a.s.) was presented as a gift to an adulterous woman?

And Banī Isrāʾīl killed seventy prophets between dawn and sunrise, then sat in their marketplaces buying and selling as though they had committed no evil deed.

Allah gave them respite, but afterwards He took vengeance upon them.

O ʿAbdullāh, fear Allah and do not withhold your support from me.” [662]

The twentieth gathering took place at Khuzaymiyyah.

When the Imām stopped there, the next morning his sister Zaynab (a.s.) came to him and said:

“Last night I went out into the desert for a need, and I heard an unseen caller reciting verses whose meaning was:

‘O eye, weep for a people whom death is driving toward their appointed meeting.’”

The Imām replied:

“Whatever Allah has decreed shall certainly come to pass.” [663]

The twenty-first gathering took place at Thaʿlabiyyah.

ʿAbdullāh ibn Sulaymān and Mundhir ibn Mushmaʿil, both from Banī Asad, narrated:

“When we completed the pilgrimage, our only desire was to join Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) and see what would become of his affair.

We travelled quickly until we reached him.

Then we saw a rider approaching from Kūfah. When he came near and saw Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.), he turned away from the road.

The Imām paused as though he wished to ask him for news, but then continued on his journey.

We approached the man, greeted him, and asked:

‘From which tribe are you?’

He replied:

‘From Banī Asad.’

We said:

‘We too are from Banī Asad. Who are you?’

He said:

‘I am Bakr ibn so-and-so.’

We then introduced ourselves and asked:

‘Tell us about the situation in Kūfah.’

He replied:

‘I did not leave Kūfah until after I had seen Muslim ibn ʿAqīl and Hānī killed and dragged through the marketplace with ropes tied to their feet.’

We then returned to the Imām and continued travelling with him until we reached Thaʿlabiyyah.

There we hurried to him, greeted him, and said:

‘We have some news. If you wish, we can tell you privately, otherwise we can speak openly.’

The Imām looked toward us, then toward his companions, and said:

‘I conceal nothing from them.’

We said:

‘Did you see that rider who was coming from Kūfah?’

He replied:

‘Yes, I wished to ask him for news.’

We said:

‘We learned his information. He is a man from our tribe, intelligent and truthful. He said that he left Kūfah only after Muslim and Hānī had been killed.’

The Imām then said:

“Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return.” (Qur'an 2:156, M. H. Shakir)

Then he repeatedly said:

“May Allah have mercy upon them.”

We then said:

‘For the sake of Allah, return from here and do not expose yourself and your family to destruction. You have no supporters in Kūfah; rather, all of them will be against you.’

The Imām looked toward the sons of ʿAqīl and asked:

‘What do you say?’

They replied:

‘No, by Allah! We shall not return until we either avenge the blood of Muslim or join him.’

The Imām then turned toward us and said:

‘There is no good in life after those young men.’

We realized that he was firmly determined to continue his journey.

So we said:

‘May Allah decree goodness for you.’

He replied:

‘May Allah have mercy upon you.’

Then some of the companions said:

‘Your position among the people of Kūfah is not like that of Muslim. When you arrive in Kūfah, the people will hasten to support you.’

The Imām remained silent and gave them no reply. [664]

Sayyid (r.a.) has narrated that the news of Muslim's martyrdom reached Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) at the station of Zubālah.

The Imām continued his journey, and along the way the poet Farazdaq met him and said:

“How can you rely upon the people of Kūfah when they have killed your cousin Muslim and his companions?”

The Imām wept and said:

“May Allah have mercy upon Muslim. He has gone on to everlasting Paradise. He fulfilled the duty that was upon him, while our duty still remains.”

Then he recited verses whose meaning is:

“If the life of this world appears precious and desirable to its people, then surely the abode of the Hereafter and the reward of Allah are higher and better.

If the end of every human body is death, then being killed in the path of Allah is certainly more virtuous.

If sustenance has already been apportioned by Allah's decree, then showing less greed for it is more becoming.

And if the wealth of this world must eventually be left behind, then why should an intelligent person be miserly concerning it?” [665]

The twenty-second gathering took place at Baṭn al-ʿAqabah.

There, ʿAmr ibn Lawdhān came to Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) and said:

“O Abā ʿAbdillāh, where are you going?”

The Imām replied:

“I am going to Kūfah.”

He said:

“I implore you by Allah to turn back. You are going only toward spears and swords.

Had the people of Kūfah firmly established the matter for you before your arrival, then there would have been no harm in your going.

But under the present circumstances, there is no benefit in it.”

The Imām replied:

“O servant of Allah, this matter is not hidden from me. However, the command of Allah shall certainly come to pass.” [666]

What a painful statement it is.
