Burial of a Nursing Child for Five Reasons

Burial of a Nursing Child for Five Reasons

As for burial, according to some narrations, he dug a grave for his nursing infant with his sword and buried him. [229]

Perhaps there were several reasons for this:

First, because he was able to do so.

Second, so that the child's head would be protected from being severed.

Third, so that he would not remain upon the bare ground for three days.

Fourth, so that he would not be trampled beneath the hooves of horses.

Fifth, so that people would not see his body in that condition.

Indeed, whatever he was able to do for his companions, he carried out. For example, he would gather their bodies together, placing some beside others, and some he personally carried with his own noble hands. He would also accompany their funerals if someone else was carrying the body.
