99-/Q3:181 M. H. Shakir: Allah has certainly heard the saying of those who said: Surely Allah is poor and we are rich; We will record what they say and their killing the prophets unjustly, and We will say: Taste the chastisement of burning.
99-/1998 _1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: By Allah, they did not see Allah to know that He is poor; rather, they saw the friends of Allah to be poor. So they said: “If Allah were rich, He would enrich His friends,” and they boasted over Allah on account of wealth.

99-/Q3:183 M. H. Shakir: Those who said: Surely Allah has enjoined us that we should not believe in any messenger until he brings to us an offering which fire consumes. Say: Indeed, there came to you messengers before me with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful?
99-/1999 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: A group of the Jews said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), “We will never believe you until you bring us an offering which fire consumes.” The Children of Israel had a basin; they would present an offering and place it in the basin, then a fire would come, fall upon it, and consume it. So they said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), “We will not believe you until you bring us an offering consumed by fire, just as the Children of Israel had.” Then Allah, exalted, said: Say to them, O Muhammad: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful?
99-/2000 _3- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Marwak ibn ‘Ubayd, from a man, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: “May Allah curse the Qadariyya; may Allah curse the Khawarij; may Allah curse the Murji’a; may Allah curse the Murji’a.” I said: You cursed these once each, but you cursed those twice? He said: “These claim that those who killed us were believers; thus our blood is smeared upon their garments until the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah related about a people in His Book: ‘We shall not believe in a messenger until he brings us an offering consumed by fire. Say: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful.’ There were five hundred years between those who said it and those who killed, yet Allah held them to be killers due to their approval of what was done.”

99-/2001 _3- Al-‘Ayyashi, from Sama‘ah, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say regarding Allah’s words: “Say: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful”: “He knew that these people did not kill, but their inclination was with those who did the killing. So Allah, exalted, called them killers due to following their desire and being pleased with that deed.”
99-/2002 _4- From ‘Umar ibn Ma‘mar. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “May Allah curse the Qadariyya; may Allah curse the Haruriyya; may Allah curse the Murji’a; may Allah curse the Murji’a.” I said to him: May I be your ransom, how is it that you cursed these once, but cursed those twice? He said: “These alleged that those who killed us were believers; so their garments are stained with our blood until the Day of Resurrection. Do you not hear Allah’s saying: ‘Those who said: Surely Allah has enjoined us that we should not believe in any messenger until he brings to us an offering which fire consumes. Say: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs ... to His saying: ... truthful?’ There were five hundred years between those addressed by this statement and the killers; yet Allah named them killers because of their approval of what those people did.”
99-/2003 _5- Muhammad ibn Hashim, from one who related it to him, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: “When this verse was revealed: ‘Say: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful,’ — and He knew that they said, ‘By Allah, we neither killed nor witnessed [it]’ — it was merely said to them: ‘Disavow your killers,’ but they refused.”

99-/2004 _6- From Muhammad ibn al-Arqat, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said to me: “Do you reside in Kufa?” I said: Yes. He said: “Then do you see the killers of al-Husayn among you?” I said: May I be your ransom, I have not seen any of them! He said: “So you consider a killer to be only one who directly killed, or one who oversaw the killing? Have you not heard Allah’s saying: ‘Say: Indeed, messengers before me came to you with clear proofs and with what you said; why then did you kill them if you are truthful?’ Which messenger did those people kill among whom Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was living, when there was no messenger between him and Jesus (peace be upon them)? They were merely pleased with the killing of those [earlier prophets]; so they were named killers.”
99-/Q3:184 M. H. Shakir: But if they reject you, so indeed were rejected messengers before you who came with clear arguments and scriptures and the illuminating book.
