Ibrahim Ayah 34-36

Allah is He Who created the heavens and the earth and sent down water from the cloud, then brought forth with it fruits as a sustenance for you, and He has made the ships subservient to you, that they might run their course in the sea by His command, and He has made the rivers subservient to you. And He has made the sun and the moon constant in their courses, to be of service to you, and He has made the night and the day of service to you. (M. H. Shakir)

And regarding His saying: And He has made the sun and the moon constant in their courses, it means consecutively and in succession.

And the manner of creating the heavens and the earth has already been discussed at the beginning of Surah Hud, in His saying: And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods, and His Throne was on the water. [1] And His saying: And He sends down water from the cloud—this has been discussed at the beginning of Surah al-Baqarah, in His saying: Who made the earth a resting place for you and the heaven a canopy, and (He) sends down water from the cloud. [2] And His saying: And He has made the sun and the moon subservient to you—its discussion came in Surah Yunus, in His saying: He it is Who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light. [3]

And He gives you of all that you ask Him; and if you count Allah's favors, you will not be able to number them; most surely man is very unjust, very ungrateful. And when Ibrahim said: My Lord! make this city secure, and save me and my sons from worshipping idols: My Lord! surely they have led many men astray; then whoever follows me, he is surely of me, and whoever disobeys me, Thou surely art Forgiving, Merciful. (M. H. Shakir)

Al-‘Ayyashi, from Husayn b. Harun—a shaykh among the companions of Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him)—from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: I heard him recite this verse: And He gives you of all that you ask Him. Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “The garment—and something you did not even ask Him for—He granted you.”

Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali b. Muhammad, from some of his companions, raising it, said: When ‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon them) recited this verse: And if you count Allah’s blessings, you will not be able to number them, he would say: “Glory be to Him Who has placed in none the knowledge of His favors except the knowledge of shortcoming in comprehending them—just as He has placed in none the knowledge of attaining Him beyond the knowledge that He cannot be attained. So the Mighty and Majestic has regarded the gnostics’ knowledge of their shortcoming in knowing His thanks as gratitude, making their awareness of deficiency itself a form of thanks—just as He has deemed the learned ones’ knowledge that they cannot attain Him to be faith. This is His knowing that it is the measure [1] of the servants’ capacity, which does not extend beyond that. For nothing of His creation reaches the extent of worship befitting Him. And how can one who has no limit and no modality have the extent of His worship reached?! Exalted is Allah above that, greatly exalted.”

And a narration has already come regarding the meaning of the verse in His saying: And remind them of the days of Allah. [2]

‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: And His words reporting Ibrahim’s words: And when Ibrahim said: My Lord, make this city secure—meaning Mecca—and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. My Lord, surely they have led many people astray—the idols did not mislead; rather, people went astray by means of them.

Al-‘Ayyashi, from al-Zuhri, said: A man came to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) and asked him about something, but he did not answer him. The man said to him: “If you are truly your father’s son, then you are from the sons of idol-worshippers.” He replied: “You lie. Allah commanded Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to settle Isma‘il (peace be upon him) in Mecca, and he did so. Then Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: My Lord! make this city secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. So none of the children of Isma‘il ever worshipped an idol. Rather, the Arabs were idol-worshippers, and the sons of Isma‘il said: ‘These are our intercessors with Allah,’ so they disbelieved, though they did not (themselves) worship the idols.”

From Abu ‘Ubaydah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “Whoever loves us is of us, the People of the House.” I said: “May I be your ransom—of you?” He said: “By Allah, of us! Have you not heard Ibrahim’s words (peace be upon him): Then whoever follows me, he is surely of me?”

From Muhammad al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Whoever among you is Godwary and sets things right is of us, the People of the House.” He (the narrator) asked: “Of you, the People of the House?” He replied: “Of us, the People of the House. About this Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: Then whoever follows me, he is surely of me. [3]” ‘Umar b. Yazid said: I asked him: “Of the Family of Muhammad?” He said: “Yes, by Allah, of the Family of Muhammad—yes, by Allah, of their very selves! Do you not hear Allah saying: Most surely the nearest of people to Ibrahim are those who followed him… [4] and Ibrahim’s saying (peace be upon him): Then whoever follows me, he is surely of me?”

Most surely the nearest of people to Ibrahim are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the guardian of the believers. (M. H. Shakir)

From Abu ‘Amr al-Zubayri, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Whoever loves [5] the Family of Muhammad and gives them precedence over all people by the precedence they have from their kinship to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family), then he is of the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) due to his loyal attachment to the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them). He is not one of the people themselves in essence, but he is of them by his loyalty and following them. Such, too, is Allah’s ruling in His Book: And whoever among you allies with them—then indeed he is of them [1]; and (like) Ibrahim’s saying: Then whoever follows me, he is surely of me; and whoever disobeys me, then surely You are Forgiving, Merciful.”

Ibn Shahr Ashub: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his Family) said about His saying, Most surely make me and my sons avoid worshipping idols: “The supplication culminated in me and in ‘Ali.” And in a report: “I am the supplication of Ibrahim.” By this he meant the pure ones, as he (may Allah bless him and his Family) said: “I was transferred from the loins of the pure to the wombs of the pure; the fornication of the Age of Ignorance did not touch me.” [2]

And the narration of ‘Abdullah b. Mas‘ud has already preceded regarding the meaning of the verse from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his Family) in His saying: Surely I will make you an Imam for mankind… in Surah al-Baqarah, transmitted by our companions and by the generality. [3]

Our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful. (M. H. Shakir)

‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from Hisham, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was residing in the desert of al-Sham. When Isma‘il (peace be upon him) was born to him from Hajar, Sarah became deeply distressed because she had no child from him. She would hurt Ibrahim (peace be upon him) concerning Hajar and grieve him. So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) complained of that to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and Allah revealed to him: ‘The likeness of woman is the likeness of a curved rib: if you leave her, you can benefit from her; if you straighten her, you break her.’ Then He commanded him to take out Isma‘il and his mother. Ibrahim said: ‘My Lord, to what place?’ He said: ‘To My sanctuary and place of safety, the first spot I created from the earth, and that is Mecca.’ So Allah sent down to him Jibril with the Buraq; he carried Hajar, Isma‘il, and Ibrahim (peace be upon them). Whenever Ibrahim (peace be upon him) passed a pleasant place with trees, palms, and crops, he would say: ‘O Jibril, here, here!’ Jibril would say: ‘No—go on, go on,’ until they came to Mecca, where he set him down at the site of the House. Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) had made a covenant with Sarah not to dismount until he returned to her. When they dismounted in that place, there was in it…”
