Al-Isra Ayah 73-76
99-/6482 - From Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl, from Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him), the same [as above].[1]
99-/6482 - From Abu al-Tufayl ‘Amir ibn Wāthilah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), he said: “A man came to my father and said: Ibn ‘Abbās claims that he knows every verse that was revealed in the Qur’an—the day it was revealed and about whom it was revealed. My father (peace be upon him) said: Then ask him: About whom was this revealed: And whoever is blind in this, he shall (also) be blind in the hereafter and more erring from the way (Qur’an 17:72, M. H. Shakir). And about whom was this revealed: And my advice will not profit you, should I intend to give you advice, if Allah intends that He should leave you to stray (Qur’an 11:34, M. H. Shakir) [2]. And about whom was this revealed: O you who believe! be patient and excel in patience and remain steadfast (Qur’an 3:200, M. H. Shakir) [3]? The man went to him, and he became angry and said: I wish the one who ordered you to do this had confronted me with it so that I could ask him. But ask him: From what is the Throne? In what was it created? How much is it? And how is it? The man returned to my father and reported what was said to him. My father asked: Did he answer you regarding the verses? He said: No. He said: But I will answer you regarding them with light and knowledge—not claimed or assumed. As for the first two, they were revealed about him and his father; and as for the other, it was revealed about his father [4] and about us. And the ribāt (steadfast readiness) we were commanded to maintain had not yet come; there will be from our progeny one who maintains ribāt, and from his progeny one who maintains ribāt.”
99-/6483 - From Kulayb, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), he said: Abu Basir asked him while I was listening, and said to him: A man has one hundred thousand [in wealth], and he kept saying, “This year I will perform Hajj; this year I will perform Hajj,” then death overtook him and he did not perform the obligatory Hajj of Islam? He said: “O Abu Basir, have you not heard the saying of Allah: And whoever is blind in this, he shall (also) be blind in the hereafter and more erring from the way (Qur’an 17:72, M. H. Shakir)—he was blind to an obligation from among Allah’s obligations.”
99-/6484 - From ‘Ali ibn al-Halabi, from Abu Basir, from one of the two (peace be upon them), regarding Allah’s saying: And whoever is blind in this, he shall (also) be blind in the hereafter and more erring from the way (Qur’an 17:72, M. H. Shakir), he said: “It is about the Raj‘a (the return).”
99-/— - And they had indeed purposed to turn you away from that which We have revealed to you that you should forge against Us other than that, and then they would certainly have taken you for a friend. And had it not been that We had already made you firm, you would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little; In that case We would certainly have made you taste a double punishment in this life and a double punishment after death, then you would not have found for yourself any helper against Us; And they had indeed purposed to unsettle you from the land that they might expel you from it, and in that case they would not have tarried after you but a little. (Qur’an 17:73-76, M. H. Shakir)

99-/— - With zāy after the alif and before it, known as Ibn al-Jaḥḥām—with ḍamma on the jīm and then an un-dotted ḥā’—trustworthy, trustworthy [1] among our companions, an eminent, sound [authority], prolific in narrations. He has a book (What Was Revealed in the Qur’an about the People of the House, peace be upon them). A group of our companions [2] said: It is a book the like of which has not been authored in its subject; and it is said that it was one thousand folios [3].
99-/— - The one indicated (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Ahmad ibn al-Qāsim (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Sayyārī narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Khālid al-Barqī, from Ibn al-Fudayl, from Abu Hamzah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “And they had indeed purposed to turn you away from that which We have revealed to you—about ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).” (Qur’an 17:73-76, allusion)
99-/6486 _2- And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn Hammām narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Isma‘il al-‘Alawī, from ‘Īsā ibn Dāwūd al-Najjār, from Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far, from his father (may blessings of Allah be upon them), who said: “The people had wanted to cause the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) to waver in his view regarding ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and to hold back somewhat from him; even some of his wives pressed him about that, so he nearly inclined to them a slight inclination. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: And they had indeed purposed to turn you away from that which We have revealed to you—about ‘Ali—so that you should forge against Us other than that, and then they would certainly have taken you for a friend. And had it not been that We had already made you firm, you would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little (Qur’an 17:73-74, M. H. Shakir).”
99-/— - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbās [4] said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) is infallible; but this is a warning to his community so that none of the believers should incline toward any of the polytheists.
99-/6487 _3- ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: His saying, And they had indeed purposed to turn you away from that which We have revealed to you—he said: it means the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). And then they would certainly have taken you for a friend—meaning, as a close friend, had you appointed other than him. Then He said: And had it not been that We had already made you firm, you would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little; In that case We would certainly have made you taste a double punishment in this life and a double punishment after death—from the day of death until the Hour is established. Then He said: And they had indeed purposed to unsettle you from the land—that is, the people of Mecca; and in that case they would not have tarried after you but a little—until they were killed at Badr. (Qur’an 17:73-76, M. H. Shakir)
99-/6488 _4- Ibn Bābawayh said: Tamīm ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Tamīm al-Qurashī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to me, from Hamdān ibn Sulaymān al-Nīsābūrī, from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jahm, from Abu al-Hasan al-Ridā (peace be upon him), from what al-Ma’mūn asked him. He said to him: Inform me about Allah’s saying: Allah pardon you! Why did you give them leave? (Qur’an 9:43, M. H. Shakir) [5].

99-/— - Al-Ridā (peace be upon him) said: “This is of what was revealed as: ‘I address you, and you, O neighbor, listen’—Allah, Mighty and Majestic, addressed His Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) with that but intended thereby his community. Likewise His saying: If you associate (with Allah), your work would certainly come to naught and you would certainly be among the losers (Qur’an 39:65, M. H. Shakir) [1], and His saying: And had it not been that We had already made you firm, you would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little (Qur’an 17:74, M. H. Shakir).” He [al-Ma’mūn] said: “You have spoken the truth, O son of the Messenger of Allah.”
99-/6489 _5- Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Abu Ya‘qūb, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him): “I asked him about Allah’s saying: And had it not been that We had already made you firm, you would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little (Qur’an 17:74, M. H. Shakir). He said: ‘On the Day of the Conquest, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) expelled idols from the Mosque, and among them was an idol on al-Marwah. Quraysh asked him to leave it, and he was bashful and thought to leave it, then he ordered it to be broken; so this verse was revealed.’”
99-/6490 _6- From ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthmān al-Bajalī, from a man: The Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) had their chiefs gather in his presence [2], and they spoke about ‘Ali (peace be upon him). The Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) was such that he showed them some leniency in speech [3]. Then Allah revealed: You would certainly have been near to inclining to them a little; In that case We would certainly have made you taste a double punishment in this life and a double punishment after death, then you would not have found for yourself any helper against Us (Qur’an 17:74-75, M. H. Shakir). Then: You will not find after you a guardian like ‘Ali (peace be upon him).”
99-/— - (This is) the course of those of Our messengers whom We sent before you, and you shall not find a change in Our course. (Qur’an 17:77, M. H. Shakir)
99-/6491 _1- Al-‘Ayyāshī: From some of our companions, from one of the two (peace be upon them), he said: “Allah has decreed divergence among His creation, and it was a matter decreed in His knowledge, just as He decreed it upon the nations before you. These are the patterns and parables that recur upon people; thus they ran upon us as they ran upon the nations before us. And Allah’s word is true—Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family): (This is) the course of those of Our messengers whom We sent before you, and you shall not find a change in Our course (Qur’an 17:77, M. H. Shakir) [4]; and He said: Do they wait for aught but the way of the former people? For you shall not find any alteration in the course of Allah, and you shall not find any change in the course of Allah (Qur’an 35:43, M. H. Shakir); and He said: What do they wait for but the like of the days of those who passed away before them? Say: So wait, surely I, too, am with you of those who wait (Qur’an 10:102, M. H. Shakir) [5]; and He said: There is no altering of Allah’s creation (Qur’an 30:30, M. H. Shakir) [6].”
