Type 3 - Mourning him after his birth and before his martyrdom

Reference

The third category consists of the gatherings that were held for mourning him after his birth and before his martyrdom. These were thirty gatherings:

The first was above the heavens near Sidrat al-Muntahā, where Allah commanded Jibrāʾīl (a.s.) to descend to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) with one thousand groups of angels, each group containing one thousand angels, to congratulate him and then offer condolences to him for the future martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.). [620]

The second was in the room of Fāṭimah (a.s.). [621]

The third was in the rooms of the wives of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.). [622]

The fourth gathering was in the Mosque of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.).

Here, sometimes the elegy was recited by Jibrāʾīl (a.s.), [623] sometimes by the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) himself, sometimes by the Angel appointed over the regions of the earth, [624] and sometimes by twelve angels who appeared in different forms and recited the elegy of Imam Husain (a.s.). [625]

At other times, all the angels participated. It is narrated that not a single angel remained except that he came and offered condolences to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) concerning his son Imam Husain (a.s.). [626]

These gatherings cannot be fully counted or confined.

Whenever I try to enumerate these Prophetic gatherings according to their circumstances, locations, times, and other aspects, I find it impossible. From a careful study of the narrations, it appears that from the very birth of Imam Husain (a.s.), and indeed from the beginning of his mother's pregnancy, all the gatherings of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) became gatherings of mourning for that noble one.

Whether it was night or day, in the mosque or at home, in gardens, streets, marketplaces, during travel or residence, in sleep or wakefulness, the remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.) was present.

Sometimes the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) himself would describe his tragedy to the Companions.

Sometimes he would listen to the angels speaking about it.

Sometimes he would merely remember it and sigh deeply.

At times he would picture the events in his mind and say:

“It is as though I see him crying for help while no one comes to aid him.”

At other times he would say:

“It is as though I see the captives riding upon camels.”

Sometimes he would say:

“It is as though I see his head being carried as a gift to Yazīd. Whoever looks at that head and becomes pleased, Allah will place disagreement between his tongue and his heart.”

Sometimes he would say:

“Be patient, O Abā ʿAbdillāh.”

Sometimes he would see the future killer of Imam Husain (a.s.), and his condition would change.

Sometimes merely seeing Imam Husain (a.s.) would make him weep.

Sometimes he would pick him up and weep.

Sometimes he would kiss him and weep.

Whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) came to him, or whenever he went to Imam Husain (a.s.), he would weep.

Whenever he dressed him in new clothes, he would weep.

Likewise, he would weep in all of his states: during celebrations, play, hunger, thirst, crying, laughter, and other occasions.

The details of these gatherings are as follows:

When the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) informed Fāṭimah (a.s.) about the birth of Imam Husain (a.s.), he also informed her of his future martyrdom, and he wept. [627]

When Imam Husain (a.s.) was born, he was wrapped in a white woolen cloth and brought to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.). The Prophet recited the adhān in his right ear and the iqāmah in his left ear.

Then he placed him in his blessed lap, looked at him, and wept.

He said:

“Great events await you. May Allah curse your killer.”

When one week had passed after his birth, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) offered a ram as his ʿaqīqah, shaved his head, and gave silver in charity equal to the weight of his hair. He applied khalūq, a type of perfume, to his head.

Then he took him into his lap and wept, saying:

“O Abā ʿAbdillāh, how difficult this is for me.”

Then he said:

“O Allah, I ask You for Imam Husain (a.s.) what Ibrāhīm asked for his descendants. O Allah, I love them, so love whoever loves them.” [628]
