57. The Favor of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) upon the mourners

(1) In one of the mosques of the city of Khoy, a majlis of mourning was being held. The children were making noise, so some told the head of the majlis to remove these children from the mosque. He replied, “I cannot.” However much they insisted, he said, “I cannot,” and then explained:

“Once, one of the young members of our mourning group, during the ritual of chain-beating, left the line and went to relieve himself beside a wall, then came back and continued the mourning.

I became angry, removed him from the line of mourners.

That night in a dream, I went to the presence of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.). He turned his face away from me.

I pleaded: ‘My master! I have served you all my life with my wealth and soul — why do you turn away from me?’

He replied: ‘Why did you upset and drive away one of my mourners?’

The next morning, I went to that young man’s house, apologized to him, and therefore I cannot expel anyone from the mosque.”

(2) Sayyid, a reciter of mourning poetry, one evening on the seventh of Muḥarram in Tehran, encountered some bad characters who requested him to recite a majlis for them.

He reluctantly accepted, saying, “This is not a suitable place for a majlis.”

One of them put him in their car, took him outside the city, positioned himself like sitting on a chair, and said, “Sit here and recite.”

He began to recite while standing, and they cried intensely.

Sayyid took advantage of the moment and encouraged them to repent. One of them, in tears, repented.

That same night Sayyid saw him in a dream, radiant and happy, walking in the gardens of Paradise.

When Sayyid awoke the next morning, he heard from the locals that the man had passed away. Sayyid recounted the events of that night — the majlis, the tears, and the repentance — and even attended the funeral.

The next night, he saw the man again in a dream, blissful and joyful, and asked him why he was so happy.

He replied:

“Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) granted me this garden as a reward for the mourning and repentance of that night.”

(3) On Sunday, 24/12/81 (equal to 11 Muḥarram 1424 AH), I went to the house of my dear friend Ḥājj Sayyid Ẓiyā al-Dīn Majd for a mourning majlis. A man named Ḥājj Mahdī Āqājānī, who was a former neighbor of Āqāy Majd, was present there. Āqāy Majd said to me: “Ask him about Ḥājj ‘Arab.”

He said:

In Qom, there was a man named Ḥājj ‘Arab who, on the days of ‘Āshūrā, would act as Shimr in the ta‘ziyah (passion play) and make people weep, and on the days after the 11th of Muḥarram he would play the role of Azraq Shāmī. There was also a person named Ḥasan, who as a three-year-old would play the role of Lady Ruqayyah (peace be upon her).

When Ḥasan grew older, at age 13, he played the role of Qāsim (a.s.). Later, when he grew even older, he played the role of ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.) and became known as Ḥājj Mīrzā Ḥasan.

One day Ḥājj ‘Arab came to his shop and said: “Tomorrow at such-and-such an hour, come to my house.”

He asked: “What is going on?”

Ḥājj ‘Arab replied: “You will find out when you come.”

After insisting, he finally said: “Tomorrow, at that hour, I am going to die.”

Ḥājj Mīrzā Ḥasan told him: “On the condition that you ask Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) to intercede for me, too.”

At the appointed hour, Ḥājj Mīrzā Ḥasan went there and found Ḥājj ‘Arab in his deathbed. Right at that hour, Ḥājj ‘Arab got up from his place and said:

“Peace be upon you, O Abā ʿAbdillāh!”

Then he turned to those present and said:

“Stand up, pay your respects, our master Abā ʿAbdillāh has arrived!”

Then, addressing the Imām, he said:

“My master! Ḥājj Mīrzā Ḥasan asks you to intercede for him as well.”

Then he lay facing the qiblah and surrendered his soul.

(4) Āyatullāh Sayyid Muḥammad Kāẓim Ṭabāṭabāʾī Yazdī, known as the author of ʿUrwah (1253–1337 AH), on a trip to Yazd for maintaining family ties, bought a piece of burial shroud for himself. Inside the shrine of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) he wrote the entire Qurʾān on it, then in the shrine of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) he wrote Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā around it with Turbah (sacred clay).

He brought this shroud with him to Yazd. On the first night of his stay in Yazd, while resting in one of his daughters’ homes, he saw Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) in a dream, who told him:

“One of our friends has passed away and is waiting for a shroud in the Yazd cemetery. We wish for this shroud to be given to him.”

He awoke and went back to sleep, and saw the same dream repeated twice more.

He put on his clothes and went to the cemetery of Yazd and saw a person named “Karīm Siyāh” who had died, had been washed and laid on the stone, awaiting a shroud.

As he arrived, they said: “The shroud has come.”

He asked them: “Who are you?”

They replied: “The same one who commanded you to bring the shroud, also commanded us to come here to help with the burial and preparation.”

He asked: “Who is this person?”

They said: “This is a man named Karīm Siyāh, an ordinary person, but he was a lover of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.). Wherever there was a majlis in the name of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.), he would attend without hesitation.”

In Yazd, near the Amīr Chakhmaq mosque, there is a market named after him.

One of the preachers recited this story from the pulpit, but what is now present in Yazd is actually called the Ghulām ʿAlī Siyāh market, not Karīm Siyāh.

(5) On Wednesday, 21/11/88 (25 Ṣafar 1431 AH), in the holy city of Mashhad, at Madrasah Imām Riḍā (a.s.), Āqāy Sayyid Muḥammad Bāqir Fālī, speaking among friends of devotion, said:

In 2002, I was on the minbar in the Emirates. The Emirates’ festival coincided with the days of ‘Āshūrā. On the night of ‘Āshūrā, I said from the pulpit:

Tomorrow, all of you, without cloaks, without shoes, barefoot, cross through all the places of dancing and partying, and bring your mourning to the night.

Among the Shīʿah there was a young man, an army captain, who had been married for 22 years but had never had a child. The doctors had said both he and his wife were sterile.

He, who was also a well-known figure among the people, joined the mourning procession of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) without cloak and without shoes, dressed in black. People mocked him, and he felt deeply brokenhearted. He turned to Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) and said:

O Ḥusain! If what I have done is right, then grant me a child!

His wife also came out barefoot. People mocked her, too, and without knowing what was in her husband’s heart, she said:

O Ḥusain! If our act is correct, I want a child from you.

Five months later, she developed severe abdominal pain and nausea. She went to the doctor, who told her: You have appendicitis and must have surgery.

But when they did further testing, they said: You are pregnant, and this nausea is due to pregnancy.

Then she gave birth to a daughter, and they named her Fāṭimah.

Āqāy Fālī said: I narrated this story on Kuwaiti television and expressed regret that I had not asked that captain’s name.

The following year during the Hajj, I happened to meet him in an elevator. He said: Do you know me? I am Abū Fāṭimah. God gave us another child after Fāṭimah, and a third is on the way!
