Weeping Over the Calamities of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) Is Among the Greatest Acts of Worship
One reason is that weeping over the calamities of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) is itself among the greatest acts of worship.
Another is that it was due to the destruction and weakening of the religion of Allah.
A third reason is that they were not free from the natural qualities of human beings. Just as hunger, thirst, and fatigue affected them, so too sorrow and heartbreak would naturally affect them.
Thus, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) wept at the death of his son Ibrahim and said:
“The heart grieves and the eye sheds tears, but we do not say anything that incurs the wrath of the Lord.” [292]
Likewise, Imam Husain (a.s.) followed the example of his noble grandfather.
How could it be possible for a human being to see himself alone and without supporters after having once been surrounded by companions, brothers, and children; to find himself oppressed, with the earth constricted around him, surrounded on every side by enemies; among women and children who were all hungry and thirsty—one sick, another unconscious, another at the point of death; while preparing to leave them and go toward death; saying to them:
“Prepare yourselves for captivity, be patient, and do not cry out or lament.”
Then, as he prepares to depart, his young daughter comes with her head uncovered, clings to his garment, and says:
“Wait a little so that I may take a final provision from you, for this is our last farewell.”
Then she kisses his hands and feet.
He sits down and places her in his lap.
In such a situation, how could he not weep?
Thus Imam Husain (a.s.) wept, wiped his tears with his sleeve, and said:
“O Sukaynah, know that after me there will be long weeping from you, when death comes upon me.”
This was one of the occasions on which he wept. [293]
The second occasion was when he came to the body of his brother al-ʿAbbas (a.s.). He saw him lying upon the ground, the waterskin pierced on one side, and his severed hands lying apart from one another. Then he wept intensely. [294]
The third occasion was when Qasim (a.s.) sought permission to fight. Imam Husain (a.s.) embraced him and wept so intensely that both of them lost consciousness. [295]
The fourth occasion was when he came to the body of Qasim (a.s.) and saw that it had been trampled beneath the hooves of horses. [296]
The fifth occasion was when his son Ali al-Akbar (a.s.) rode out to the battlefield. Tears flowed from his eyes, and he placed his blessed hand upon his beard, raised his head toward the sky, and supplicated to Allah. [297]
The sixth occasion was when he was consoling his sister Zaynab (a.s.) regarding her weeping and distress. At that moment, weeping overcame him, and several tears fell from his eyes, though he then restrained himself. [298]
If you reflect upon these situations, you will know that it is ordinarily impossible for a compassionate and merciful heart not to weep under such circumstances.
Conclusion: Know that the previous section dealt with the unique qualities of Imam Husain (a.s.) throughout the days of his life.
This section dealt with the unique qualities of those unique qualities that became manifest on the Day of Ashura.
And this conclusion concerns the unique qualities of those unique qualities of those unique qualities that appeared on the Day of Ashura.
Its essence consists of two astonishing attributes:
