S 57 Ayat 19

And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light. And (as for) those who disbelieve and reject Our communications, these are the inmates of the hell.

99-/10501 Ash-Shaykh in at-Tahdhīb with his chain of transmission, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam, from Marwān, from Abū Khuḍayrah, from someone who heard ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them both) say — and he mentioned the martyrs.

Then some among us said: concerning one who dies of stomach illness, and some said: concerning one who is eaten by a wild beast, and others mentioned other cases concerning martyrdom. Then someone said: "I did not know that a martyr was anyone except one killed in the way of Allah."

So ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them both) said: "If that were so, the martyrs would be very few." Then he recited this verse: "And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord."

Then he said: "This is for us and for our Shīʿah."

99-/10502 Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Barqī from his father, from Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Jaʿfarī, from Jamīl ibn Darrāj, from ʿAmr ibn Marwān, from al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥaṣīrah, from Zayd ibn Arqam, from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī (peace be upon them both), who said:

"There is none among our Shīʿah except that he is a truthful one and a martyr." He said: I said, "May I be your ransom! How can that be, while most of them die on their beds?"

99-/10502 He (peace be upon him) said: "Do you not recite the Book of Allah in Surah Al-Hadid: 'And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord'?"

He said: So I said, "It is as if I have never recited this verse from the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, ever before." He said: "If it were only as you say, then the martyrs would indeed be very few."

99-/10503 And from him: from Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn Yazīd, from Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmayr, from ʿUmar ibn ʿĀṣim, from Minhal al-Qaṣṣāb, who said:

I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him): "Pray to Allah for me to attain martyrdom." He said: "Surely the believer is a martyr wherever he dies. Have you not heard the saying of Allah in His Book: 'And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord'?"

99-/10504 Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from Ibrāhīm ibn Isḥāq, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who raises it to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "The truthful ones (ṣiddīqūn) are three: Ḥabīb an-Najjār, who is the believer of the people of Yāsīn; and Ḥizqīl, who is the believer of the people of Pharaoh; and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib."

The angel said to him: 'Gently, gently, O Muḥammad, for by Allah, you are more honored with Allah than all the inhabitants of the heavens and all the inhabitants of the earth combined.'

The name of the angel was Maḥmūd, and between his shoulders was written: There is no god but Allah, Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, ʿAlī is the Greatest Truthful One (aṣ-Ṣiddīq al-Akbar). The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said to him: 'My beloved Maḥmūd, since when has this been written between your shoulders?' He said: 'Twelve thousand years before Allah created Ādam.'"

99-/10507 Aṭ-Ṭabrisī said: al-ʿAyyāshī narrated [with his chain] from Minhal al-Qaṣṣāb, who said:

99-/10508 And from al-Ḥārith ibn al-Mughīrah, who said: We were with Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), and he said:

"The one among you who recognizes this matter, awaits it, and seeks goodness through it—by Allah, he is like one who fought with the Qāʾim of the family of Muḥammad (peace be upon him) with his sword." Then he said: "Rather, by Allah, like one who fought alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) with his sword." Then he said a third time: "Rather, by Allah, like one who was martyred alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) in his tent. And among you is a verse from the Book of Allah."

I said: "Which verse, may I be your ransom?" He said: "The saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord.'"

Then he said: "By Allah, you have become the truthful ones, the martyrs with your Lord."

99-/10509 Sharaf ad-Dīn an-Najafī said: The author of the book al-Bishārāt narrated with an elevated chain to al-Ḥusayn ibn Abī Ḥamzah, from his father, who said:

I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him): "May I be your ransom, I have grown old, my bones have weakened, my end has drawn near, and I fear that death may overtake me before this matter (your rising) occurs."

He said to me: "O Abā Ḥamzah, do you think the martyr is only one who is killed?" I said: "Yes, may I be your ransom."

He said to me: "O Abā Ḥamzah, whoever believes in us, affirms our words, and awaits our affair is like one who was killed under the banner of the Qāʾim (peace be upon him)—rather, by Allah, under the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)."

99-/10510 And from Abū Baṣīr, who said: Imām aṣ-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said to me: "O Abā Muḥammad, the one who dies holding to this matter is a martyr." He said: I said, "May I be your ransom, even if he dies on his bed?" He said: "Even if he dies on his bed, he is alive and provided for."

99-/10511 Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb, with his chain of narration, from Yaḥyā al-Ḥalabī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Muskan, from Abū Baṣīr, who said:

I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him): "May I be your ransom, the one who rejects this matter—is he like one who rejects you?" He said: "O Abā Muḥammad, whoever rejects this matter of yours, it is as if he has rejected the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and Allah, Blessed and Exalted. O Abā Muḥammad, surely the one among you who dies holding to this matter is a martyr." I said: "Even if he dies on his bed?" He said: "Yes, by Allah! Even if he dies on his bed, he is alive and provided for by his Lord."

99-/10512 And from him, with his chain of narration, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Muskan, from Mālik al-Juhanī, who said: Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said to me:

"O Mālik, are you not content that you establish prayer, give zakāt, restrain your hands and your tongues, and enter Paradise? O Mālik, there is no group of people who follow a leader (imam) in this world except that on the Day of Resurrection he will curse them and they will curse him—except for you and those who are on your path. O Mālik, by Allah, the one among you who dies holding to this matter is a martyr, in the rank of one who strikes with his sword in the way of Allah."

99-/10513 Ibn Bābawayh, from his father, with his chain of transmission, raising it to Abū Baṣīr and Muḥammad ibn Muslim, who said: Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said: My father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from his forefathers (peace be upon them):

"Indeed, Amīr al-Muʾminīn (peace be upon him) taught his companions in a single session four hundred chapters of knowledge, among them his saying (peace be upon him): Beware of the base people, for the base are those who do not fear Allah, the Mighty and Majestic—for among them are the killers of prophets, and among them are our enemies.

Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, looked upon the earth and chose us, and chose for us Shīʿah who support us, rejoice at our joy, grieve at our sorrow, and offer their wealth and lives for our sake. [They are of us] and to us. And there is no servant among the Shīʿah who commits something we have forbidden except that he will not die until he is afflicted with a trial through which his sins are purified."

99-/10513 “…either in his wealth, or in his children, or in himself—until he meets Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and has no sin upon him. And if anything remains upon him of his sins, it will be intensified upon him at the time of his death.

And the one who dies from among our Shīʿah is a truthful one (ṣiddīq) and a martyr (shahīd), who has affirmed our cause, loved for our sake, and hated for our sake, seeking by that the Face of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic—believing in Allah and His Messenger.

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light.’

99-/10514 And from Amīr al-Muʾminīn (peace be upon him), that he said to his companions:

"Remain grounded (upon the earth), be patient in the face of tribulation, do not move with your hands, your swords, or your tongues, and do not hasten what Allah has not hastened for you. For surely, whoever among you dies on his bed while being aware of the right of his Lord, the right of His Messenger, and the right of the People of his Household, dies as a martyr. His reward is upon Allah, he receives what he intended of righteous deeds, and his intention stands in place of fighting with his sword."

99-/10515 Ibn Bābawayh in Faḍāʾil ash-Shīʿah, from his father, who said: Saʿd ibn ʿAbdullāh narrated to me, from Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmmār, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "When it is the Day of Resurrection, people will be brought forth upon pulpits of light. Their faces will shine like the full moon on its night. The first and the last will envy them." Then he paused and repeated this statement three times.

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: "May my father and mother be your ransom! Are they the martyrs?" He said: "They are the martyrs, but not the martyrs as you think." He said: "Are they the prophets?" He said: "They are the prophets, but not the prophets as you think." He said: "Are they the successors (awṣiyāʾ)?" He said: "They are the successors, but not the successors as you think." He said: "Are they from the people of the heavens or from the people of the earth?" He said: "They are from the people of the earth." He said: "Then tell me who they are."

He pointed with his hand to ʿAlī (peace be upon him) and said: "This one and his Shīʿah. No one from Quraysh hates him except a bastard, nor from the Anṣār except a Jew, nor from the Arabs except a child of fornication, nor from the rest of the people except a wretched one. O ʿUmar, the one who claims to love me while hating this one is a liar."

99-/10516 Ibn Shahr Āshūb, from ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding the saying of Allah: "And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord."

He said: "The truthful one (ṣiddīq) of this Ummah is ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him); he is the Greatest Truthful One (aṣ-Ṣiddīq al-Akbar) and the Supreme Discerner (al-Fārūq al-Aʿẓam)."

Then he said: "And the martyrs with their Lord" — Ibn ʿAbbās said: "They are ʿAlī, Ḥamzah, and Jaʿfar. So they are the truthful ones and the martyrs, the witnesses over the nations on behalf of the messengers that they had conveyed the message."

Then he said: "For them is their reward with their Lord for affirming the Prophethood, and their light (will be) upon the ṣirāṭ."

/10517 And from the sources of the opponents (Ahl al-Sunnah): as narrated by al-Ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad ibn Muʾmin ash-Shīrāzī in his book al-Mustakhraj min at-Tafāsīr al-Ithnay ʿAshar, in the commentary on the verse:

"And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light."

He raises it to Ibn ʿAbbās, and said: "And those who believe" — meaning, those who affirm that Allah is One — are ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Jaʿfar al-Ṭayyār. They are the truthful ones (aṣ-ṣiddīqūn)."

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "The Truthful One (ṣiddīq) of this Ummah is ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and he is the Greatest Truthful (aṣ-Ṣiddīq al-Akbar) and the Supreme Discerner (al-Fārūq al-Aʿẓam)."

99-/10518 Muwaffaq ibn Aḥmad, raising it to Ibn ʿAbbās, said:

A group asked the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): "Regarding whom was this verse revealed?"

He said: "When it is the Day of Resurrection, a banner of white light will be raised, and a caller will call out: 'Let the master of the successors rise, along with those who believed after the mission of Muḥammad (peace be upon him and his family).' Then ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) will rise, and the banner of white light will be placed in his hand. Under it will be all the foremost pioneers (as-sābiqūn al-awwalūn) from the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār—no one else will mix with them—until he sits upon a pulpit of light before the Lord of Might. All will be presented to him one by one, and he will give each their reward and their light. And when he comes to the last of them, it will be said to them: 'You have now known your ranks and your stations in Paradise…'"

99-/10518 “…Indeed your Lord says: ‘You have with Me forgiveness and a great reward’—meaning Paradise. Then ʿAlī will enter Paradise along with the people under his banner, and afterward he will return to his pulpit. Then all the believers will continue to be presented to him, and he will take his portion of them into Paradise, and he will consign others to the Fire.

That is the saying of the Exalted: ‘And (as for) those who believe in Allah and His messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the martyrs with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light.’ —meaning the foremost pioneers among the believers and the people of wilāyah.

‘And those who disbelieve and reject Our signs, they are the companions of the hellfire’—meaning: those who disbelieved and rejected wilāyah and the right of ʿAlī (peace be upon him).”
