Ar-Ra'd Ayah 12-13

- Her face had turned to the back of her head, so he placed his right hand on her forehead and his left hand behind it, then pressed her face towards the right and said: Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. Her face was restored, and he said: Beware of doing as you did. They said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, and what did you do? He said: That is concealed unless she speaks of it. They asked her, and she said: I had a co-wife. I stood to pray and thought my husband was with her. I turned towards her and saw her sitting while he was not with her. Then her face returned as it had been.

- 99-/5490: From Abu ‘Amr al-Madā’inī, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), he said: “My father used to say: Allah has decreed a decisive decree that He does not bestow a blessing upon a servant and then take it away from him before the servant commits a sin by which he becomes deserving of being stripped of that blessing. And that is the saying of Allah: Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”

- 99-/5491: From Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Abu al-Hasan al-Ridā (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves; and when Allah intends evil for a people, there is no turning it back—“then the matter returns to Allah, Exalted.”

- 99-/5492: From al-Husayn ibn Sa‘īd al-Makfūf: he wrote to him (peace be upon him) in a letter: “May I be your ransom, my master, teach your servant what makes the supplicant’s prayer not accepted, and what makes the doer’s prayer not delayed; and what is the limit of the seeking of forgiveness upon which Nūh was given a promise, and the seeking of forgiveness whose utterer is not punished, and how are they to be pronounced? And the meaning of His saying: And whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah [1], and whoever trusts in Allah [2], and His saying: So whoever follows My guidance [3], and whoever turns away from My reminder [4], and: Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves—how do a people change what is in themselves?” He wrote (blessings of Allah be upon him): “May Allah recompense you on my behalf by multiplying the reward and the fair and beautiful recompense; and peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you all. Seeking forgiveness is (to be said) a thousand (times). And reliance (tawakkul): Whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him; and Whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet and provide for him whence he does not expect. As for His saying: So whoever follows My guidance—that is, whoever professes (belief) in the Imams and follows their command with good obedience. And as for the change, He does not do evil to them until they undertake that themselves by their sins and by committing what He has forbidden.” And he wrote this in his own hand.

- Quran 13:12-13 (M. H. Shakir): He it is Who shows you the lightning causing fear and hope and (Who) brings up the heavy cloud. And the thunder declares His glory with His praise, and the angels too for awe of Him; and He sends the thunderbolts and smites with them whom He pleases, yet they dispute about Allah, and He is mighty in prowess.

- 99-/5493: Ibn Bābawayh said: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qattān, Muhammad ibn Bakrān al-Naqqāsh, and Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ishāq al-Tālaqānī (may Allah be pleased with them) told us; they said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘īd al-Hamdānī narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddāl informed us, from his father, who said: Al-Ridā (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, He it is Who shows you the lightning causing fear and hope, said: “Fear for the traveler and hope for the resident.”

- 99-/5494: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, from Hārūn ibn Muslim, from Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Ali (peace be upon him) used to stand in the rain when it first began to fall until his head, beard, and clothes were soaked. It was said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, seek shelter, seek shelter! [1] He said: This is water freshly from near the Throne. Then he began to relate: Beneath the Throne is a sea in which is water that brings forth the provision of living beings. When Allah (mighty is His remembrance) wills to bring forth with it what He wills for them, as a mercy for them, Allah reveals to it, and it pours what He wills from heaven to heaven until it reaches the lowest heaven—as I think—then He casts it to the clouds, and the clouds are like a sieve. Then Allah reveals to the wind: Grind it and dissolve it as water dissolves; then go with it to such-and-such a place and pour rain upon them. So it becomes such and such as surging waves and otherwise; then it drips upon them in the manner He commands it. There is not a drop that falls except that with it is an angel until he places it in its place. And never has a drop of rain descended from the heaven except by a known measure and weight—except what was on the day of the Flood in the time of Nūh (peace be upon him), for then there descended gushing water without measure and without number.”

- 99-/5495: He said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) related to me: “My father (peace be upon him) said to me; the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Verily Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has made the clouds sieves for the rain; they melt the hail until it becomes water so that it does not harm anything it strikes. And what you see in it of hail and thunderbolts is a punishment from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with which He afflicts whom He wills of His servants.” Then he said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Do not point at the rain, nor at the new moon, for Allah dislikes that.” Al-Himyari narrated this in Qurb al-Isnād with his chain, from Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him).

- 99-/5496: And from him: from Muhammad ibn Yahyā, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Īsā, from Muhammad ibn Ismā‘īl, from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl, from Abu al-Sabbāh al-Kinānī, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “A believer dies by every kind of death except the thunderbolt; it does not seize him while he is remembering Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

- 99-/5497: And from him: from Humayd ibn Ziyād, from al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Samā‘ah, from Wuhaib ibn Hafs, from Abu Basīr, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the death of the believer. He said: “A believer dies by every kind of death: he dies by drowning, and he dies by being crushed, and he may be tried by a beast, and he dies by a thunderbolt—but it does not strike one who remembers Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

- 99-/5498: And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Burayd ibn Mu‘āwiyah al-‘Ijlī, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Thunderbolts do not strike one who is remembering.” I said: Who is the one remembering? He said: “Whoever recites one hundred verses.”

- 99-/5499: Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Yūnus ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, that Dāwūd said: We were with him and the sky thundered, so he said: “Glory be to Him for Whom the thunder proclaims praise, and the angels out of fear of Him.” Abu Basīr said to him: May I be your ransom, does the thunder have speech? He said: “O Abu Muhammad, ask about what concerns you and leave what does not concern you.”

- 99-/5500: From Abu Basīr, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about the thunder—what does it say? He said: “It is like a man among camels who drives them: ‘Hay, hay,’ of that sort.” I said: Then what is the lightning? He said to me: “Those are among the whips [1] of the angels; they strike the clouds and drive them to the place where Allah has decreed the rain.”

- 99-/5501: Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Nu‘mānī: with his chain from al-Asbagh ibn Nubātah, who said: I heard ‘Ali (peace be upon him)—in a hadith, therein—regarding His saying, And He is mighty in mihāl, say: “He means plotting.”

- /5502: ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: His saying, He it is Who shows you the lightning causing fear and hope—meaning, some people fear it and others hope for it, that they might be rained upon. And brings up the heavy clouds—meaning, He raises them from the earth. And the thunder declares His glory with His praise—meaning, it is the angel who drives the clouds. And the angels (declare His glory) out of fear of Him. And He sends the thunderbolts and smites with them whom He pleases, while they dispute about Allah, and He is mighty in mihāl.

- That is, “severe in wrath.”

- 99-/5503: Al-Shaykh in al-Amālī said: A group informed us, from Abu al-Mufaddal, who said: Nasr ibn al-Qāsim ibn Nasr, Abu Layth al-Farā’idi, and ‘Amr ibn Abi Hassān al-Ziyādī narrated to us; they said: Ishāq ibn Abi Isrā’īl narrated to us; he said: Daylam ibn Ghazwān al-‘Abdī and ‘Ali ibn Abi Sārah al-Shaybānī narrated to us; they said: Thābit al-Bunānī narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sent a man to a “Pharaoh” from among the pharaohs of the Arabs to call him to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The man said to the Messenger of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): Inform me about this to which you call me—is it made of silver, or of gold, or of iron? He returned to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) and told him his words. The Prophet said: “Return to him and call him.” He said: O Prophet of Allah, he is more insolent than that. He said: “Return to him.” So he returned to him and spoke as before. As he was speaking to him, a cloud thundered a thunder, and it cast upon his head a thunderbolt that took off the crown of his skull. Then Allah—majestic is His praise—revealed: And He sends the thunderbolts and smites with them whom He pleases, yet they dispute about Allah, and He is mighty in prowess.

- Quran 13:14 (M. H. Shakir): To Him is due the true prayer; and those whom they pray to besides Him give them no answer, but are like one who stretches forth his two hands to water that it may reach his mouth, and it will never reach it; and the prayer of the unbelievers is only in error.

- 99-/5504: ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And those whom they call upon besides Him do not answer them in any way—“This is a parable Allah has struck for those who worship idols and who worship gods other than Allah: they do not answer them in any way nor benefit them—like one stretching his two hands to water to reach his mouth to take it from afar, but he does not obtain it.”

- /5505: And ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said regarding His saying, And the prayer of the unbelievers is only in error—that is, in futility.

- 99-/5506: Then he said: My father narrated to me, from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr, from ‘Amr ibn Shimr, from Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “A man came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I saw a tremendous matter. He said: And what did you see? He said: I had a …”
