99-/6302 _9- From Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding the saying of Allah: Imma yablughanna ‘indaka al-kibara ahaduhumā aw kilāhumā falā taqul lahumā uffin walā tanharhumā, he said: “It is the least of the least; Allah has forbidden it, so whatever is above it (is all the more) forbidden.”
(Quran reference: al-Isrā’ 17:23–24. M. H. Shakir translation: “And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve any but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) Ugh nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word. And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little.”)
99-/6303 _10- From Harīz, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) say: “The least degree of undutifulness is ‘Uff’; and if Allah knew anything lighter than it, He would have forbidden it.”
99-/6304 _11- From Abū Walād al-Hannāṭ, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Wa bil-wālidayni iḥsānā. He said: “Iḥsān is that you show excellence in their company, and that you do not put them to the trouble of asking you for anything they need—even if they are well-off. Does not Allah say: Lan tanālū al-birra ḥattā tunfiqū mimmā tuḥibbūn [1]?”
Then Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “As for His saying: Imma yablughanna ‘indaka al-kibara aḥaduhumā aw kilāhumā fa-lā taqul lahumā uffin—(I say:) If they annoy you, do not say to them ‘Uff’; and do not rebuke them even if they strike you. And (regarding): Wa qul lahumā qawlan karīman—(it means:) say to them: ‘May Allah forgive you both’; that, from him, is a noble word. And (regarding): Wa’khfiḍ lahumā janāḥa adh-dhulli mina r-raḥmah—(it means:) Do not fill your eyes when looking at them except with mercy and tenderness; do not raise your voice above their voices, nor your hands above their hands, and do not walk ahead of them.”

99-/6310 _4- From ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Aṭā’ al-Makkī, who said: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Come with us to an orchard of ours.” He called for a donkey and a mule, and said: “Which of the two do you prefer?” I said: “The donkey.” He said: “I would like you to prefer me with the donkey.” I said: “The mule is more beloved to me.” So he rode the donkey and I rode the mule. When we proceeded, the donkey pranced in its gait until it shook Abū Ja‘far’s shoulders (peace be upon him), so he held on to the pommel [3] of the saddle. I said: “May I be ransomed for you, it is as if I see you complaining of your stomach.” He said: “And you noticed this of me? Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had a donkey called ‘Ufayr. When he mounted it, it would prance in its gait out of joy for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) until it shook his shoulders, so he would hold on to the pommel of the saddle and say: ‘O Allah, this is not from me, but this is from ‘Ufayr.’ And my donkey, out of my joy, pranced in its gait, so I held on to the pommel of the saddle and said: ‘O Allah, this is not from me, but this is from my donkey.’”
He said: Then he said: “O son of ‘Aṭā’, do you see whether the sun has declined?” I said: “May I be your ransom, how would I know that while I am with you?” He said: “No, it has not, but it is about to.” Then we went on and he said: “It has.” I said: “This reddish place?” He said: “No prayer is to be performed here; these are valleys, and prayer is not performed (in them).” Then we went on to a white land. He said: “This is salty ground, and prayer is not performed on salty ground.” Then we went on to a gravelly land. He said: “Here.” So he dismounted and I dismounted.
He said: “O son of ‘Aṭā’, you came to Iraq and saw the people praying between those pillars in the Mosque of Kūfa?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Those are the Shī‘a of my father ‘Alī. This is the Prayer of the Awwābīn. Indeed, Allah says: Fa-innahu kāna lil-awwābīna ghafūrā.”

99-/6316 _1- Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb: From ‘Alī ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh, from some of our companions—I think it was al-Sayyārī—from ‘Alī ibn Asbāṭ, who said: When Abū al-Ḥasan (peace be upon him) came to al-Mahdī, he saw him restoring wrongfully-taken properties. Then the Messenger…”
