Ar-Ra'd Ayah 1

Alif Lam Mim Ra. These are the verses of the Book; and that which has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe. (Ar-Ra’d 13:1, M. H. Shakir)

99-/5434

99-/5434 - Ibn Bābawayh said: Abū al-Hasan Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Zanjānī informed us—in what he wrote to me via the hands of ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-Baghdādī al-Warrāq—he said: Muʿādh b. al-Muthannā al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us, he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Asmāʾ narrated to us, he said: Juwairiya narrated to us from Sufyān b. Saʿīd al-Thawrī. He said: I said to Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be on them): O son of the Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of Allah’s saying: Alif Lam Mim Ra? He said: “Alif Lam Mim Ra means: I am Allah, the Giver of life, the Causer of death, the Provider.”

99-/5435 - Al-ʿAyyāshī: from Abū Labīd, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be on him), who said: “O Abā Labīd, indeed in the letters of the Qur’an there is abundant knowledge. Surely Allah, blessed and exalted, sent down: Alif Lam Mim. That is the Book [al-Baqara 2:1–2, Shakir: Alif Lam Mim. This Book, there is no doubt in it, is a guide to those who guard (against evil).]. Then Muḥammad (may Allah bless him and his family) stood forth until his light shone and his word was established; and he was born on the day he was born, when seven thousand years and three years had elapsed. Then he said: Its explanation is in the Book of Allah within the disjointed letters when you count them without repetition. There is no set of disjointed letters whose term ends except that a Qa’im from Banū Hāshim is present at its ending. Then he said: Alif is one, Lām is thirty, Mīm is forty, and Ṣād is ninety [in the source: sixty], so that is one hundred and sixty-one [in the source: and thirty]. Then the beginning of the rising of al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī (peace be on him) was at: Alif Lam Mim. Allah [Āl ʿImrān 3:1–2, Shakir: Alif Lam Mim. Allah—there is no god but He, the Ever-living, the Self-subsisting (by Whom all subsist).]; and when its term reached completion [in the source: its term], a Qa’im from the progeny of al-ʿAbbās arose at: Alif Lam Mim Ṣād [al-Aʿrāf 7:1], and our Qa’im will arise at its ending. Alif Lam Mim Ra. So understand that, retain it, and keep it secret.”

Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see. (Ar-Ra’d 13:2, M. H. Shakir)

99-/5437 - Then he said: My father narrated to me, from al-Ḥusayn b. Khālid, from Abū al-Ḥasan al-Riḍā (peace be on him). He said: I said to him: Inform me about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “By the heaven full of paths” [al-Dhāriyāt 51:7, Shakir: I swear by the heaven full of ways.]. He said: “It is interlaced with the earth,” and he interlaced his fingers. I said: How can it be interlaced with the earth when Allah says: “(Allah) raised the heavens without any pillars that you see” (Ar-Ra’d 13:2, Shakir). He said: “Glory be to Allah! Does Allah not say: ‘without any pillars that you see’?” I said: Indeed. He (peace be on him) said: “There are pillars, but you do not see them.” I said: How is that, may I be your ransom? He then spread out his left palm and placed his right upon it and said: “This is the earth of this world, and the lowest heaven is over it like a dome; the second earth is above the lowest heaven, and the second heaven is over it like a dome; the third earth is above the second heaven, and the third heaven is over it like a dome; the fourth earth is above the third heaven, and the fourth heaven is over it like a dome; the fifth earth is above the fourth heaven, and the fifth heaven is over it like a dome; the sixth earth is above the fifth heaven, and the sixth heaven is over it like a dome; the seventh earth is above the sixth heaven, and the seventh heaven is over it like a dome; and the Throne of the All-Merciful, blessed and exalted, is above the seventh heaven—and it is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘He it is Who created seven heavens, one above another; and of the earth the like of them; the decree continues to descend among them’ [al-Ṭalāq 65:12, Shakir]. As for the possessor of the Decree, he is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and the legatee after the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) stands upon the face of the earth; so the Decree descends to him from above the heaven, from among the heavens and the earths.” I said: So is there beneath us only one earth? He said: “Beneath us there is only one earth, and indeed the six are above us” [in the source: above it].

99-/5438 - Al-ʿAyyāshī: from al-Ḥusayn b.
