And from him, he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt, from Abū al-Jārūd Ziyād ibn al-Munḏir, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from Ibn ʿAbbās regarding the saying of the Almighty: “He has made the two seas to flow freely (so that) they meet together; Between them is a barrier which they cannot pass” [al-Raḥmān 55:19–20], he said: “He has made the two seas to flow freely” refers to ʿAlī and Fāṭimah (peace be upon them); “Between them is a barrier which they cannot pass” refers to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family); “There comes forth from them pearls and coral” [55:22], he said: [it refers to] al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them).

"There comes forth from them pearls and coral" [55:22] refers to al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them).

Then he said: Who has seen the like of these four — ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them)? None loves them except a believer, and none hates them except a disbeliever. So be believers through the love of Ahl al-Bayt, and do not be disbelievers by hating them, lest you be cast into the Fire.

From Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from Anas, and from Abū Mālik, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and from the judge al-Naṭanzī, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) — and this wording is from him — regarding the saying of the Most High: “He has made the two seas to flow freely so that they meet.” (Qur'an, 55:19), he said: “ʿAlī and Fāṭimah are two deep oceans; neither of them transgresses against the other.”

And in another narration: “Between them is a barrier which they do not transgress.” (Qur'an, 55:20) — The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is that barrier. “There comes forth from them pearls and coral.” (Qur'an, 55:22) — He said: “al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them).”

99-/10316 _10

From Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās: Fāṭimah (peace be upon her) cried due to hunger and lack of clothing. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “Be content, O Fāṭimah, with your husband, for by Allah, he is a master in this world and a master in the hereafter.” Then he reconciled between them, so Allah the Exalted revealed: “He has made the two seas to flow freely so that they meet.” (Qur'an, 55:19). Allah says: “I have sent forth the two seas — ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, the sea of knowledge, and Fāṭimah, the sea of Prophethood — they meet (i.e., they are united). I am Allah; I established the connection between them.”

Continuation of 99-/10316 _10

Then he said: “Between them is a barrier which they do not overpass” — a barrier meaning the Messenger of Allah, who prevents ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib from grieving over worldly matters and prevents Fāṭimah from arguing with her husband over the world. “Then which of the bounties of your Lord will you both deny?” — O assembly of jinn and men, will you deny the guardianship (wilāyah) of the Commander of the Faithful and the love for Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ?

As for the pearl (al-luʾluʾ) — it is al-Ḥasan; and the coral (al-marjān) — it is al-Ḥusayn. This is because pearls are the large ones, and coral refers to the smaller ones. And it is not strange that they are described as two seas, due to the vastness of their virtue and the abundance of their goodness. For the sea is only called “baḥr” because of its vastness.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) once raced a horse and said: “I found it to be like a sea (baḥr)” — meaning swift and vast in motion.

99-/10317

ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar al-Ḥimyarī, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from ʿAlī (peace be upon them), said regarding the verse: "There come forth from them pearls and coral":

He said: “(They come) from the water of the sky and from the water of the sea. When it rains, the oyster shells open their mouths in the sea, and a drop of rainwater falls into them, and from that the small pearls emerge from the small drop, and the large pearls come from the large drop.”

99-/10318

And from the path of the opponents: as narrated by al-Thaʿlabī in his tafsīr on the verse: "There come forth from them pearls and coral", he attributes it (marfūʿan) to Sufyān al-Thawrī regarding this verse. He said: “Fāṭimah and ʿAlī (peace be upon them) — 'There come forth from them pearls and coral',” [he said: “al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them)”].

Al-Thaʿlabī said: This was also narrated from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, and he said: "Between them is a barrier" refers to Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
