Al-Isra Ayah 71
M. H. Shakir: The day when We will call every people with their Imam; then whoever is given his book in his right hand, these shall read their book; and they shall not be dealt with a straw.
M. H. Shakir (17:70): And certainly We have honored the children of Adam, and carried them in the land and on the sea, and provided them with good things, and preferred them to many of those whom We have created, with a marked preference.
Translation: I said: O Commander of the Faithful, your grandfather ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas interpreted it. Al-Hajjaj ibn Ibrahim al-Khuzi [1] informed me, from Maymun ibn Mihran, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding this verse: “And certainly We have honored the children of Adam ...” He said: Every animal eats with its mouth, except the son of Adam, for he eats with his fingers. Abu Mu‘awiyah said: It reached me that he threw away a silver spoon that was in his hand and took food with his finger.

He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) replied: I am the Messenger of Allah to all people; but after me there will be Imams over the people, from Allah, from my Ahl al-Bayt. They will stand among the people, and they will be called liars, and the Imams of disbelief and misguidance and their followers will wrong them. Whoever has loyalty to them, follows them, and believes them is of me and with me and will meet me. Lo! Whoever wrongs them and denies them is not of me nor with me, and I am free of him.

M. H. Shakir (69:19-20): Then as for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say: Lo! read my book: Surely I knew that I shall meet my account.
M. H. Shakir (3:187): And when Allah made a covenant with those who were given the Book...
M. H. Shakir (56:41-43): And those of the left hand...
Translation: From Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him): “When it is the Day of Resurrection, each will be called with his Imam in whose age he died. If he affirms him, he will be given his book in his right hand, by His saying: ‘The day We call every people with their Imam; then whoever is given his book in his right hand—these shall read their book.’ And ‘the right hand’ means affirming the Imam, for he is a Book that is read. Indeed Allah says: ‘Then as for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say: Lo! read my book; surely I knew that I shall meet my account’ [69:19-20]. And ‘the Book’ is the Imam. Whoever throws him behind his back is as He said: ‘But they threw it behind their backs’ [3:187]. And whoever denies him is among the people of the left, about whom Allah said: ‘And those of the left hand … in hot wind and boiling water, and the shade of black smoke’ [56:41-43], to the end of the verse.”

Translation: From Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “When this verse was revealed: ‘The day We call every people with their Imam,’ the Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah, are you not the Imam of the Muslims altogether?” He said: “I am the Messenger of Allah to all people; but after me there will be Imams over the people from Allah, from my Ahl al-Bayt. They will stand among the people and will be denied and wronged. Lo! Whoever befriends them is of me and with me, and he will meet me. Lo! Whoever wrongs them or helps in wronging them and denies them is not of me nor with me, and I am free of him.” And he added in another narration like it: “And the Imams of disbelief and misguidance and their followers will wrong them.”

Then the Imams of depravity will be called—and by Allah, Yazid is among them—and it will be said to him: Take your followers by the hand and proceed to the Fire without reckoning.

M. H. Shakir (35:32): Then We made heirs to the Book those whom We chose from among Our servants; but of them is he who makes his soul to suffer a loss, and of them is he who takes a middle course, and of them is he who is foremost in deeds of goodness by Allah’s permission; that is the great excellence.
Translation: Al-Rawandi in al-Khara’ij: from Abu Hashim, from Abu Muhammad al-‘Askari (peace be upon him), and he was asked about His saying: “Then We made heirs to the Book those whom We chose from among Our servants…” He (peace be upon him) said: “All of them are from the Family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family). The one who wrongs himself is he who does not acknowledge the Imam; the moderate is the one who knows the Imam; and the one foremost in good [2] is the Imam.” I began to contemplate within myself the greatness of what Allah has given to the Family of Muhammad, and I wept. He looked at me and said: “The matter is greater than what your soul has told you of the greatness of the station of the Family of Muhammad. So praise Allah that He made you one who holds fast to their cord; you will be called on the Day of Resurrection by them when every people is called with their Imam. You are certainly upon good.”

Translation: Al-Tabrisi, after gathering several opinions on that, said: These statements are what the elite and the common have narrated from ‘Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (peace be upon him), with sound chains—that he narrated from his forefathers (peace be upon them), from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), that he said about it: “Every people will be called with the Imam of their time, the Book of their Lord, and the Sunna of their Prophet.”

Translation: Al-Mufid in al-Ikhtisas: from al-Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad al-Basri, from Bistam ibn Murrah, from Ishaq ibn Hassan, from al-Haytham ibn Waqid, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan al-‘Abdi, from Sa‘d ibn Tarif, from al-Asbagh ibn Nubata, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) commanded us to march to al-Mada’in from Kufa, so we set out on Sunday, and ‘Amr ibn Hurayth lagged behind with seven men. They went out to a place in al-Hira called al-Khawarnaq [3]. They said: Let us amuse ourselves; then on Wednesday we will set out and catch up with ‘Ali before he leads Friday prayer. While they were eating lunch, a lizard came out upon them, and they struck it [4]. ‘Amr ibn Hurayth took it, raised its paw and said: Pledge allegiance—this is the Commander of the Faithful! So the seven pledged to it and ‘Amr was the eighth. They set out Wednesday night and arrived at al-Mada’in on Friday while the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was preaching. They had not separated from each other—they were together until they came to the door of the mosque. When they entered, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) looked at them and said: “O people, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) confided to me a thousand reports; in each report are a thousand gates; in each gate are a thousand keys. And I heard Allah say: ‘The day We call every people with their Imam.’ And I swear to you by Allah, there will indeed be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection eight men with their Imam—and it is a lizard. And if I wished to name them, I would do so.” He said: If you had seen ‘Amr ibn Hurayth, he was bursting [1] like a frond, out of fear [2].

Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying, “The day We call every people with their Imam,” said: That is the Day of Resurrection. A caller will call: Let Abu Bakr and his followers arise, and ‘Umar and his followers, and ‘Uthman and his followers, and ‘Ali and his followers. And his saying, “and they shall not be dealt with a straw,” he said: It is the thread-like skin on the back of the date-stone.
