So this verse was sent down in that circumstance.”

99-/6594

English: From al-Halabi—from some of our companions—he said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him): “My son, adhere to the good deed between the two bad ones; it will efface them.” He said: “How is that, father?” He said: “Like the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And do not utter your prayer with a very raised voice nor be silent with it’—‘Do not utter it loudly’ is a bad deed, and ‘do not be silent with it’ is a bad deed, and ‘seek a way between these’ is a good deed. And like His saying: ‘And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck, nor stretch it forth to the utmost’ [3]. And like His saying: ‘And they who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor parsimonious—if they are extravagant, it is a bad deed, and if they are miserly, it is a bad deed—and between these is a just means’ [1]—that is a good deed. So adhere to the good deed between the two bad ones.”

And praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a son, and Who has no partner in the kingdom, and Who has no helper to save Him from disgrace; and proclaim His greatness magnifying (Him).
