Chapter on the Water Given to Husain (a.s.)
Chapter on the Water Given to Husain (a.s.)
Since Imam Husain (a.s.) was prevented from access to freely available water, Allah bestowed upon him four kinds of water:
First: He made the Pond of al-Kauthar his right and possession, and He caused his companions to drink from it before their souls departed.
Thus, when ʿAli al-Akbar (a.s.) fell to the ground, he cried out:
“My father! Here is my grandfather, who has given me to drink from a cup after which I shall never again be thirsty.” [386]
And it is the right of those who weep for him that they drink from it.
This benefit has been narrated regarding many righteous deeds, but the special distinction of Imam Husain (a.s.) is that al-Kawthar itself rejoices when those who weep for him drink from it. [387]
Second: The Water of Life (Maa' al-Haywaan) in Paradise, which becomes mixed with the tears of those who weep for him, thereby increasing the excellence and sweetness of its taste. [388]
Third: The tears of the eyes, which Allah made his special right.
For this reason he is called:
“The one laid low by tears,”
and
“The one slain for whom tears are shed.”
Allah made tears the effect of his blessed name, and indeed the effect of everything connected to him; the effect of mentioning his tragedy; the effect of looking toward his grave; and the effect of smelling his sacred soil. [389]
Fourth: Every cool and pleasant drink of water that his followers consume.
For Imam Husain (a.s.) has a right concerning it, namely that they remember him and invoke curses upon his killers.
As he said:
“O my Shiʿah! Whenever you drink sweet and pleasant water, remember me.”
And Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said:
“I have never drunk cold water except that I remembered Imam Husain (a.s.).” [390]
The wisdom behind the fact that the rights of Imam Husain (a.s.) concerning water are of four kinds may perhaps have two reasons:
