The Special Characteristics of the Visitors of that Noble One (a.s.) Before His Martyrdom
The Special Characteristics of the Visitors of that Noble One (a.s.) Before His Martyrdom
Indication
Chapter Eleven: Concerning the special characteristics found among the visitors of that noble one (a.s.) before his martyrdom, and after his martyrdom before his burial.
Here there are two discussions:
The First Discussion: Concerning those visitors who visited before his martyrdom.
They were of several categories:
The first: The angels, as it is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) that the angels visited Karbala one thousand years before my grandfather Imam Husain (a.s.) came to dwell therein. [966]
The second: The Prophets (a.s.), as it is narrated in an authentic tradition that there was no Prophet except that he visited Karbala before that shining moon of the constellation of Imamate was buried therein. [967]
The third: The Ark of Nuh (a.s.), the carpet of Sulayman (a.s.) which revolved there, the sheep of Ismaʿil (a.s.), and the gazelles that spoke with al-Masih (a.s.). All of these visited Karbala through the special ways that were mentioned previously.
The fourth: The companions of that noble one (a.s.) who were martyred in his company.
When they prepared themselves for martyrdom, each one visited him in a particular manner.
Some came mounted and some came on foot before his blessed presence and would say:
“Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah. Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).”
The Imam (a.s.) would reply:
“And peace be upon you.”
Then he would say:
“Go forth, for we shall soon follow behind you.” [968]
The secret of this visitation was that they wished to attain the blessing of visiting that noble one (a.s.) during his lifetime in addition to the blessing of martyrdom.
Some of the martyrs possessed a special distinction in this visitation.
Among them were Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman, two brothers from the tribe of Ghifar.
They came before the Imam (a.s.), stood at a distance, and offered salām.
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“Come nearer.”
So they approached and said:
“Peace be upon you.”
“We have come so that we may be killed before you.”
Then they wept intensely.
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“Peace be upon both of you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.”
“O sons of my brother, why are you weeping? I hope that within a short time your eyes shall be delighted.”
They replied:
“May we be your ransom. By Allah, we do not weep for ourselves. Rather, we weep for you, for the enemy has surrounded you and we are unable to do anything for your sake.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“May Allah reward you with goodness for the compassion and support that you have shown toward me.” [969]
Another example is the noble Ali al-Akbar (a.s.), who, after he had fallen to the ground, turned toward his father and visited him by saying:
“O my father, peace be upon you from me.”
This visitation possessed special characteristics in regard to its timing, its wording, and its response.
As for its timing, he delayed it until that moment.
The reason was that the other martyrs, when they intended to go forth for combat, would come before the Imam (a.s.) while he was seated or standing before the tents.
According to customary practice, they would offer salām so as to attain the reward of visitation.
But Ali al-Akbar (a.s.), when he intended to go forth for combat, the Imam (a.s.) accompanied him and did not remain in his place so that Ali al-Akbar (a.s.) could offer salām in the usual manner.
As for its wording, he offered the salām with the phrase:
“Upon you be peace.”
The reason for this was that it was a farewell salām, not a salām of greeting.
As for the special nature of the response, it was that the Imam (a.s.) did not answer this salām.
There were two reasons for this.
First: This was not a salām of greeting for which a response would be obligatory.
Second: When he heard this salām, such a state overcame him that all of his faculties ceased functioning and his condition was completely transformed.
He only said:
“O my son, they have killed you.”
As its details will be mentioned later, if Allah wills.
