Belief in the guardianship, as your forefathers were ennobled by it.

99-/474 _2- al-‘Ayyāshī: from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And when We appointed for Moses forty nights.” He said: “It was, in knowledge and decree, thirty nights; then it appeared to Allah and He added ten, so his Lord’s appointed time was completed—the first [1] and the last—forty nights.” (Qur’an 2:51) M. H. Shakir: And when We appointed a time for Moses forty nights, then you took the calf after him and you were unjust.

(Qur’an 2:54) M. H. Shakir: And when Moses said to his people: O my people! you have surely been unjust to yourselves by taking the calf (for a god), therefore turn to your Creator (penitently), so kill your people, that is best for you with your Creator: so He turned to you (mercifully), for surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

99-/475 _1- The Imam al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And remember, O Children of Israel, when Moses said to his people who worshiped the calf: O my people! You have wronged yourselves—you have harmed them—by taking the calf as a god. So turn in repentance to your Creator, who created you and formed you; so kill yourselves by having some of you kill others—let those who did not worship the calf kill those who did. That is better for you—that killing is better for you with your Creator than that you live on in this world while He has not forgiven you, so that your life in this world runs its course and your outcome is to the Fire. But if you are killed while repentant, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, makes that killing an expiation for you, and He makes Paradise your dwelling [2] and your place of return. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: So He turned to you (mercifully) before your repentance—before the killing took in the entirety of your group and before it overtook you all—and He granted you respite for repentance and spared you for obedience. Surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.” He said: “This was because when Allah, Exalted, nullified the matter of the calf at the hands of Moses (peace be upon him), making it speak to reveal the Samiri’s deception, and He commanded Moses (peace be upon him) that those who had not worshiped it should kill those who had, most of them disavowed and said, ‘We did not worship it.’ So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to Moses (peace be upon him): File down this golden calf with iron filings, then scatter them in the sea; whoever drinks its water, his lips and nose will turn black and his sin will be manifest. He did so, and the worshipers of the calf became evident. Allah, Exalted, then commanded twelve thousand to go out against the rest, unsheathing swords to kill them. And His herald called out: ‘Behold! May Allah curse anyone who spares them with hand or foot; and may Allah curse whoever examines the one to be killed lest he recognize a dear one or a relative [3] and so pass him over to kill a stranger instead.’ The condemned submitted. The killers said: ‘Our affliction is greater than theirs: we are killing with our own hands our fathers, our sons, our brothers [1] and our kin—while we did not worship. Thus we have been made equal with them in calamity.’ Allah, Exalted, revealed to Moses (peace be upon him): ‘O Moses, I only tested them with this because they did not separate themselves from them when they worshiped the calf, nor did they shun them, nor show enmity toward them for that. Say to them: whoever supplicates Allah by Muhammad and his pure family, the killing of those deserving death for their sins will be made easy for him.’ They said it, and Allah made that easy for them, and they felt no pain in killing them. When the killing intensified [2] among them—out of six hundred thousand, except the twelve thousand who had not worshiped the calf—Allah granted some of them success, and one said to another—before the killing had yet reached [3] them: ‘Has not Allah made seeking a means by Muhammad and his pure family a matter with which no request is disappointed and no petition is rejected? Thus did the prophets and messengers seek means; so why do we not seek means?’ They gathered and cried out: ‘Our Lord, by the rank of Muhammad, the most noble; and by the rank of ‘Alī, the most excellent, the greatest; and by the right of Fātimah, the most virtuous; and by the rank of al-Hasan and al-Husayn, the two grandsons of the master of the messengers and the two lords of the youths of Paradise altogether; and by the rank of the pure, immaculate progeny from the family of Tā Hā and Yā Sīn—do forgive our sins, remit our penalties [4], and remove from us this killing.’ Then Moses (peace be upon him) was called [5]: ‘Stop the killing, for some of them have asked Me for a petition [6] and sworn Me an oath [7]; had these worshipers of the calf sworn by it and asked Me for protection, I would have protected them so they would not worship it; and had Iblīs sworn by it to Me, I would have guided him; and had Nimrod or Pharaoh sworn by it to Me, I would have saved him.’ So He lifted the killing from them, and they began to say: ‘Alas for us! Where were we from this supplication by Muhammad and his pure family, that Allah might have spared us the evil of trial and granted us the most excellent protection?!’»

99-/476 _2- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: When Moses (peace be upon him) went out to the appointed time and returned to his people and they had worshiped the calf, Moses said to them: O my people! you have surely wronged yourselves by taking the calf, so turn to your Creator and kill yourselves; that is better for you with your Creator. They said: How shall we kill ourselves? Moses said to them: Go forth [8]—each one of you—to the Holy House, each with a knife or an iron blade or a sword. When I ascend the pulpit of the Children of Israel, you be masked so that no one recognizes his companion, and kill one another. Seventy thousand men of those who had worshiped the calf gathered at the Holy House. When Moses (peace be upon him) prayed with them and ascended the pulpit, they turned upon one another, killing, until Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said: Say to them, O Moses, “Raise your hands from killing, for Allah has turned to you (mercifully).” Ten thousand of them were killed, and Allah revealed: That is better for you with your Creator, so He turned to you; surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

(Qur’an 2:55) M. H. Shakir: And when you said: O Moses! we will not believe in you until we see Allah manifestly, so the punishment overtook you while you looked on.

(Qur’an 2:56) M. H. Shakir: Then We raised you up after your death that you may give thanks.

99-/477 _1- The Imam al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And when you said, ‘O Moses, we will not believe you until we see Allah openly,’ your forefathers said it; so the thunderbolt seized you—the thunderbolt seized your forefathers—while you were looking at them; then We raised you—we raised your forefathers—after your death—after the death of your forefathers—so that you might give thanks, that is, so that your forefathers might be grateful for the life in which they could repent, desist, and turn back to their Lord. He did not perpetuate that death upon them so that their outcome would be to the Fire, abiding therein.” He said: “This was when Moses (peace be upon him) intended to take from them the covenant of the Criterion [2], distinguishing those who affirmed and those who denied Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) in his prophethood, ‘Alī (peace be upon him) in his Imamate, and the pure Imams in their Imamate. They said: ‘We will not believe you that this is your Lord’s command until we see Allah openly, before our very eyes, informing us of that.’ So the thunderbolt seized them before their very eyes while they watched it descend upon them. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to him: ‘O Moses, I am the One who honors My friends and those who affirm My elect, and I do not mind; and likewise I am the One who punishes My enemies who push away the rights of My elect, and I do not mind.’ Moses (peace be upon him) said to those remaining who had not been struck down: ‘What do you say—do you accept [3] and acknowledge? Otherwise you will be with these…’”
