Special Rewards for the Visitors
Special Rewards for the Visitors
Chapter Four: Concerning a special reward and unique distinction that result from the ziyārah of that noble one (a.s.), and which deserve to be mentioned separately.
As for the remarkable special reward, Shaykh al-Saduq, Sayyid Ibn Tawus, al-Kafʿami, and the author of al-Mazar al-Kabir have narrated through reliable chains that the recorders of good deeds remain occupied in writing good deeds for the visitors from the moment they resolve to undertake the ziyārah until the Day of Resurrection. [863]
Thus, it is among the righteous deeds that continue continuously, not merely that it is regarded as continuous like the other ongoing charitable deeds.
Indeed, it is the greatest of the enduring righteous deeds.
And all of these rewards are in addition to those special qualities that are granted to the visitor, including even the special distinction concerning the one who takes charge of seizing his soul at death.
Among the astonishing matters that leave the intellect bewildered is that within it there are sixteen virtues, each one greater than a hundred virtues.
One of them is that for every word from the words of the ziyārah, a share of Allah's mercy is granted to him. [864]
Even more astonishing is that all of these are only a portion of his reward and recompense.
This concerns the noble ziyārah regarding which Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) asked a man:
“How far is your residence from the grave of Imam Husain (a.s.)?”
He replied:
“May I be your ransom, one day and part of another day.”
The Imam (a.s.) asked:
“Do you visit him?”
He replied:
“Yes.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“Shall I give you glad tidings? Shall I make you happy by informing you of some of its reward?”
He replied:
“Yes, may I be your ransom.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“Know that whenever a person begins preparing for the journey of ziyārah, the inhabitants of the heavens express joy.
Then when he leaves his home, whether riding or walking, Allah appoints four thousand angels for him from among the angels who send blessings upon him until he reaches that noble place.
Then when you arrive at that blessed station, stand at the gate and recite these words. For every word of them, a portion of Allah's mercy is assigned to you.”
The man asked:
“What are those words?”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
Say:
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Adam, the Chosen One of Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Nuh, the Prophet of Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Musa, the One Spoken to by Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Isa, the Spirit of Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), the Beloved of Allah.”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of the successor of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Hasan al-Radi (a.s.).”
“Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Fatimah (a.s.), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).”
“Peace be upon you, O truthful martyr.”
“Peace be upon you, O righteous, pious successor.”
“Peace be upon you and upon the souls that settled in your courtyard and encamped at your abode.”
“Peace be upon the angels of Allah who surround you.”
“I bear witness that you established the prayer, gave the zakat, enjoined the good, forbade the evil, and worshipped Allah”
“with sincerity until certainty came to you.”
“And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.”
Then proceed on your journey, for with every step that you take or place upon the ground, there is for you the reward of a martyr whose blood has been shed in the path of Allah.
When you arrive at the grave, place your hand upon it and say:
“Peace be upon you, O Proof of Allah in His heavens and His earth.”
Then engage in prayer, for every rakʿah that you perform beside him carries for you the reward of a thousand Hajj pilgrimages, a thousand ʿUmrahs, the emancipation of a thousand slaves, and a thousand jihads in the path of Allah alongside a sent Messenger.
Then when you intend to return, a caller will call out to you. If you were able to hear his words, you would never depart. He will say:
“Glad tidings to you, O servant of Allah! You have attained the spoils, you have been delivered safely, and your sins have been forgiven. Therefore begin your deeds anew.”
If he dies during that night, or that day, or that year, Allah Himself will take his soul.
And if he remains alive, angels will descend to him and accompany him. They will seek forgiveness for him and send blessings upon him until he reaches his home.
Then they will say:
“O Allah! This servant of Yours went to visit the son of the daughter of Your Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and has now returned. What is our duty?”
A command will come:
“Remain at his house. Glorify and sanctify Me, and record the reward of that for him until the day of his death.”
So they will remain there until his appointed time arrives and he dies.
Then they will be present at his preparation for burial and will perform prayers over him.
Thereafter they will say:
“O Allah! What is our duty now?”
A command will come:
“Remain beside his grave, glorify and sanctify Me, and record the reward of that for him until the Day of Resurrection.” [865]
As for the special quality that is attained by the visitor and which deserves to be mentioned independently, it is that whoever goes to visit Imam Husain (a.s.) has indeed visited Allah upon the Throne. [866]
This is an expression indicating the utmost nearness to Allah and ascent through the Darajaat al-Kamaal (degrees of perfection).
Greater than this is that through it Allah reaches the visitor, because
it is narrated:
“Allah, the Exalted, visits that Imam Husain (a.s.) every Friday night.” [867]
Therefore, if a person has gone to visit him, he has gone to the visitation of Allah.
It is evident that the visitation of Allah is an expression for the bestowal of a special mercy upon that noble one. Thus, whoever attains it will not be deprived of that mercy and will inevitably receive a share of it.
And his visitation of Allah is an expression for the perfection of nearness.
When these two matters are combined, there results a degree of encompassment by Divine mercy beyond which nothing greater can be imagined.
And in another narration it is stated:
“Whoever wishes to look towards Allah on the Day of Resurrection should frequently visit Imam Husain (a.s.).” [868]
Thus, these become three expressions:
“Visiting Allah,”
“Visiting with Allah,”
and
“Looking towards Allah.”
All of these are expressions indicating the utmost extent of what can be conceived for a created being in ascending toward the Darajaat al-Qurb (degrees of nearness).
For this reason, I have devoted a separate chapter to this quality.
