The third stage
The third stage:
It begins roughly from the fifth century AH. In this stage, the science of tafsir attains a true maturity, and the scholars of tafsir begin to exercise ijtihād (independent reasoning) and personal opinion in the Book of Allah. Tafsir moves beyond the stage of narration, transmission, and collection to the stage of ijtihād, reflection, and personal judgment. Among these were: al-Wāḥidī in the fifth century AH, al-Zamakhsharī in the fifth and sixth centuries AH, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī in the sixth century AH, from among the Sunni scholars; and from among the Shi‘a scholars, Sayyid al-Raḍī in Ḥaqāʾiq al-Taʾwīl in the fourth and fifth centuries AH, and Shaykh al-Ṭāʾifah al-Ṭūsī in the fifth century AH in his tafsir al-Tibyān, among others.
From the fifth century AH onward, tafsir entered firmly among the primary and foundational Islamic sciences, and it began to grow, develop, and continuously mature in its various elements across different fields and from different perspectives — such as jurisprudence, mysticism, philosophy, literature, narration, ethics, and others.
And the efforts of scholars specializing in the Qur’an came together in this stage to develop Qur’anic concepts, ideas, understandings, and rulings in an organized manner. Also, during this stage, the ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān (Qur’anic sciences) emerged alongside tafsir, which include a series of essential subjects that any researcher of the Noble Qur’an must study, such as: its inimitability (iʿjāz), abrogation and abrogated verses, the decisive and the allegorical, tafsir and taʾwīl.
If we wish to follow the scholarly movement in tafsir and Qur’anic sciences from the fifth century AH until today among the scholars of both groups, the Shi‘a and the Sunnis, we find that this stage has been fertile in Qur’anic thought, giving rise to many ideas and understandings, opening wide new horizons of the Qur’an to humanity, and deriving numerous issues in the various branches of Qur’anic knowledge.
And we can say that the intellectual movement within the Noble Qur’an began in this stage, and the Islamic intellect entered into the horizons of the Qur’an, and it continues its effort and movement within the horizons of the Book of Allah.
However, we should not overlook the accumulation of errors and deviations that accompanied this intellectual effort during this period. Various intellectual and political schools tried to subject the Noble Qur’an through interpretation (taʾwīl) to serve their own ideas and beliefs, instead of submitting their ideas and beliefs to the Qur’an. As a result, they imposed upon the Noble Qur’an what it could not bear of different ideological orientations, far removed from the transparent spirit of the Qur’an and far from the Qur’an’s message.
The bāṭinī and Sufi movements were foremost in this regard, and thus they were deprived of the transparency and authenticity of the Qur’anic text, and of the spirit and guidance of the Qur’an.

And we mention below one example from the words of these scholars which is infused with the spirit of Sufism regarding the Qur’an:
Some of the prominent scholars of this group and leading mystics, in interpreting the saying of Allah, the Most High:
“And when Musa returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said: Evil is that which you have done after me! Did you hasten on the command of your Lord? And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him towards himself.” (al-Aʿrāf 7:150, M. H. Shakir)
say that the reproach of Musa (peace be upon him) to Harun was because he criticized Harun for objecting to the worship of the calf and for not broadening his chest to accept the worship of the calf, since the gnostic sees the Truth in everything, rather he sees it as the very essence of everything【2】. The writings of the Sufi scholars are filled with such interpretations, and perhaps in what the Shaykh, the gnostic of Allah, and the famous Sufi Ibn ʿArabi left behind in his tafsir, al-Futuhāt, al-Fuṣūs, and other books are further examples of this.
While we acknowledge the great intellectual effort exerted by this learned scholar in the knowledge of the Qur’an and tawḥīd, at the same time we must point out his excesses in interpreting the Book of Allah.
And these opinions and interpretations, taken as a whole, constitute a large and heavy accumulation in the history of the Noble Qur’an, with a negative impact on Qur’anic awareness and the method of engaging with it.
This is not to diminish the great scholarly effort that these scholars and gnostics expended in exploring the depths of this Book and bringing forth its ideas and concepts to the people.
We are in the greatest need of two Qur’anic studies regarding this stage:
