An-Nahl Ayah 84-89
99-/6111 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying: “And on the day when We will raise up a witness out of every nation,” said: For every time [and nation] there is an Imam; every nation will be raised with its Imam. And regarding: “Those who disbelieved and turned away from the way of Allah, We will add chastisement to chastisement,” he said: They disbelieved after the Prophet and turned away from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him); “We will add chastisement to chastisement because they used to act corruptly.” Then he said: “And on the day when We will raise up in every nation a witness against them from among themselves,” meaning the Imams. Then He said to His Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): “And We will bring you, O Muhammad, as a witness against these,” meaning against the Imams. Thus the Messenger of Allah is a witness over the Imams, and the Imams are witnesses over the people.
99-/6112 _2- Al-Tabrisi: From al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), he said: “For every age and nation there is an Imam; each nation will be raised with its Imam.”
(Qur’an 16:89, M. H. Shakir) And We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit.
99-/6113 _3- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: From Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar, from Ibn Faddal, from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman, from ‘Abd al-A‘la ibn A‘yan, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) begot me, and I have knowledge of the Book of Allah. In it is the beginning of creation and what will be until the Day of Resurrection; in it is the news of the heaven and the news of the earth, the news of the Garden and the news of the Fire, the news of what has been and the news of what is to be. I know that as I look at my palm. Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘In it is a clarification of all things.’”
99-/6114 _4- And from him: from a number of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub, from al-Harith ibn al-Mughirah, and a number of our companions among them ‘Abd al-A‘la, Abu ‘Ubaydah, and ‘Abdullah ibn Bishr al-Khath‘ami, who heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “I surely know what is in the heavens and what is on the earth; I know what is in the Garden and I know what is in the Fire; and I know what was and what will be.” He said: Then he paused a moment, and seeing that this weighed heavily upon those who heard it from him, he said: “I learned that from the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘In it is a clarification of all things.’”

99-/6115 _3- Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Saffar: From Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd, from Muhammad ibn ‘Umar, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Walid al-Samman, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “O ‘Abdullah, what do the Shi‘a say about ‘Ali, and Musa, and ‘Isa (peace be upon them)?” I said: May I be your ransom, regarding which aspects are you asking me? He said: “I ask you about knowledge.” I said: They say that Musa and ‘Isa (peace be upon them) are superior to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). He said: “By Allah, he is more knowledgeable than both of them. Do they not say that ‘Ali (peace be upon him) has the same knowledge as the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family)?” I said: Yes. He said: “Then dispute with them on that basis. Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Musa (peace be upon him): ‘And We wrote for him upon the tablets of every thing’ [Qur’an 7:145], informing us that He did not explain everything in full to him. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family): ‘And We will bring you as a witness against these, and We have revealed to you the Book as a clarification of all things.’”
99-/6116 _4- And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Isma‘il, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr al-Zayyat, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Walid, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to me: “What do the Shi‘a say about ‘Isa, Musa, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)?” I said: They say that Musa and ‘Isa (peace be upon them) are superior to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). He said: “Do they claim that the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) knew what the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) knew?” I said: Yes, but they do not place anyone above the Messengers of firm resolve. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Then dispute with them by the Book of Allah.” I said: In which place in it shall I dispute with them? He said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Musa (peace be upon him): ‘And We wrote for him upon the tablets of every thing’ [Qur’an 7:145]; thus we learned that not everything was written for Musa (peace be upon him). And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said [to ‘Isa (peace be upon him): ‘And so that I may make clear to you part of that about which you differ’ (Qur’an 43:63)], and Allah, Exalted, said to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family): ‘And We will bring you as a witness against these, and We have revealed to you the Book as a clarification of all things.’”
99-/6117 _5- And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘d, from Hamdan ibn Sulayman al-Naysaburi, from ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Yamani, from Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, from Yunus, from al-Husayn ibn ‘Alwan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Allah created the Messengers of firm resolve and favored them with knowledge; He made us heirs to their knowledge and their excellence, and He favored us over them in their knowledge; He taught the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) what they did not know, and He taught us the knowledge of the Messenger and their knowledge.”
99-/6118 _6- And from him: from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Ahmad ibn Abi Bishr, from Kathir ibn Abi Humran, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Musa (peace be upon him) asked the ‘alim a question for which he had no answer; and the ‘alim asked Musa (peace be upon him) a question for which he had no answer. If I had been between them, I would have informed each of them of the answer to his question, and I would have asked them a question for which they would have had no answer.”
99-/6119 _7- And from him: from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa, from Ibn Maskan, from Sudayr, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) who said: “When Musa (peace be upon him) met the ‘alim, spoke to him and asked him, he saw a swallow chirping, rising into the sky and dipping into the sea. The ‘alim said to Musa (peace be upon him): Do you know what this swallow is saying? He said: What is it saying? He said: It says: By the Lord of the heaven and the earth, your knowledge compared to the knowledge of your Lord is only like what I have taken in my beak from this sea.” He said: Then Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, if I had been with them, I would have asked them a question regarding which they would have no knowledge.”
99-/6120 _8- And from him: from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq, from ‘Abdullah ibn Hammad, from Sayf the date-seller, who said: We were with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), a group of us, in the Hijr. He said: “By the Lord of this structure and the Lord of this Ka‘bah—three times—if I were between Musa and al-Khidr, I would inform them that I am more knowledgeable than both of them, and I would inform them of what is not in their possession.”
99-/6121 _9- And from him: from Ahmad ibn al-Husayn, from al-Hasan ibn Rashid, from ‘Ali ibn Mahziyar, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, who said: and they all related to me—from some of our companions—from ‘Abdullah ibn Hammad, from Sayf the date-seller, who said: We were with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) in the Hijr. He said: “Are there eyes upon us?” We looked right and left and said: No, there are no eyes upon us. He said: “By the Lord of this Ka‘bah—three times—if I were between Musa and al-Khidr (peace be upon them), I would inform them that I am more knowledgeable than both of them, and I would inform them of what is not in their possession.”

He said: “Are there eyes upon us?” We looked right and left and saw no one and said: There are no eyes upon us. He said: “By the Lord of the Ka‘bah and the Lord of the structure—three times—if I were between Musa and al-Khidr (peace be upon them), I would inform them that I am more knowledgeable than both of them, and I would inform them of what is not in their possession; for Musa and al-Khidr (peace be upon them) were given knowledge of what had been, but they were not given knowledge of what will be and what is to be until the Hour rises—and we have inherited that, by inheritance, from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family).”

99-/6125 _13- And from him: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid, from Mansur ibn Yunus, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended upon Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) with two pomegranates from the Garden. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) met him and said: What are these two pomegranates in your hand? He said: As for this one, it is prophethood—there is no share for you in it; and as for this one, it is knowledge.” Then the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) split it into two halves, gave him half and the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) took half; then he said: “You are my partner in it, and I am your partner in it.” He said: “By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) did not know a single letter of what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, taught him except that he taught it to ‘Ali (peace be upon him). Then the knowledge ended up with us.” Then he placed his hand upon his chest.

99-/6126 _14- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Yunus, from a number of our companions, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “I surely know the news of the heaven and the news of the earth, the news of what has been and the news of what is to be, as if it were in my palm.” Then he said: “I know it from the Book of Allah; indeed Allah says: ‘In it is a clarification of all things.’”

99-/6127 _15- From Mansur, from Hammad the butcher, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, we know what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, what is in the Garden and what is in the Fire, and what is between that.” He said: I was astonished, looking at him. He said: “O Hammad, that is in the Book of Allah—three times.” Then he recited this verse: “And on the day when We will raise up in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We will bring you as a witness against these, and We have revealed to you the Book as a clarification of all things and a guidance and a mercy and good news for those who submit. Indeed it is a Book in which is a clarification of all things.”

And Allah said to Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family): ‘And We will bring you as a witness against these, and We have revealed to you the Book as a clarification of all things.’”
99-/6129 _17- From ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Sulayman: It was found in a buried cache of al-Zamazi a parchment dated one thousand and two hundred years, written in Syriac with its explanation in Arabic. He said: When the dispute occurred between Musa son of ‘Imran and al-Khidr (peace be upon them) mentioned by the Mighty and Majestic in Surat al-Kahf in the story of the ship, the boy, and the wall, and he returned to his people, his brother Harun asked him what he had encountered from al-Khidr. He said to him: Knowledge whose ignorance does not harm; but there was something more wondrous than that. He said: What is it? He said: While we were standing on the seashore, a bird in the form of a swallow approached and alighted on the sea. It took water in its beak and cast it to the east; then took again and cast it to the west; then took a third time and cast it to the south; then took a fourth time and cast it to the north; then took and cast it to the sky; then took and cast it to the earth; then took once more and cast it to the sea; then it fluttered and flew away. We remained astonished, not knowing what the bird intended by its action. While we were thus, Allah sent to us an angel in the form of a human and he said: Why do I see you astonished? We said: Because of what the bird intended by its action. He said: Do you not know what it intended? We said to him: Allah knows best. He said: It says: By the One who brought forth the rising of the east and the setting of the west, who raised the heaven and spread out the earth, Allah will surely raise in the last times a Prophet named Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family), who has a legatee named ‘Ali (peace be upon him); and both of your knowledge, in relation to their knowledge, is like this drop in this sea.
(Qur’an 16:90, M. H. Shakir) Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful.
99-/6130 _1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Al-‘adl (justice) is the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family).
Qur’anic references and translations:
- 16:84 (M. H. Shakir): And on the day when We will raise up a witness out of every nation, then shall no permission be given to those who disbelieve, nor shall they be made to solicit favor.
- 16:89 (M. H. Shakir): And We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit.
- 7:145 (M. H. Shakir): And We ordained for him in the tablets admonition of every kind and clear explanation of all things; so take hold of them with firmness and enjoin your people to take hold of what is best in them; I will show you the abode of the transgressors.
- 43:63 (M. H. Shakir): And when Isa came with clear arguments he said: I have indeed come to you with wisdom, and that I may make clear to you part of what you differ about; so be careful of (your duty to) Allah and obey me.
